TRANSCRIPT
Dear Parents and Carers, I am pleased to be writing to you again in our term 5 newsletter. Traditionally this is a busy term for the final preparation and start of the public exam season. Students are fully prepped and ready to put all their knowledge into the public exams in years 11 and 13. However, this term started even busier than usual with the arrival of the Ofsted Inspection team in the first week back. I hope you have had an opportunity to read our report that we have published on the academy website, and I hope you will agree it is a good reflection of the community that we have at Longfield Academy. Throughout the 2 days our students were a credit to the Academy (and to you) with the way they welcomed the visitors and spoke so enthusiastically about their learning experiences. We are particularly proud of the Post 16 "Outstanding" grade that shows the long term investment we put into the students to make great progress. We are one of only a few Post 16 provisions with this accolade in Kent. One of the aspects of education that I am most passionate about is building character and resilience within young people. As a Trust we have been researching a range of approaches to building these skills and I am pleased to announce that we are going to be introducing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) for the new year 7 students starting in September. Many of your children would recognise many of the traits of a MYP student as they are very closely aligned to our own Longfield Learner. In preparation for this new curriculum development
I have consulted with the Academy Governing Body and have been granted an additional training day for staff to begin preparation for this exciting programme. This additional training day will be on Friday 6th July, so students will not be in that day. Many of you may be aware of the changes to data protection and the introduction of GDPR. We have done a considerable amount of training around this to ensure that your data is safe at all times and the appropriate information held. All staff have undertaken GDPR training and our privacy policy updated. This can be found on our website. If you would like to find out more about GDPR, there is a link to our privacy statements on our website front page. I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter this term - I am sure you will agree there has been a lot going on! As always, my thanks go to students and staff for the hard work they have all put in this term. Mrs A O’Donnell

World Silver Medallist!
Congratulations to Phoebe
Lovell in year 10 for competing
in the World Cheerleading
Championships in America for
Team England All Girls and
Intensity Cheer Extreme.
Phoebe came in second place
whilst representing Team
England, gaining herself a
silver medal. She also finished
10th in the world with ICE, the
first time that her cheer squad
has achieved this.
Well done Phoebe!
Do you represent a club/ district/ county/ country?
If you are regularly taking part in sport outside of school then we want to hear from you. We love to hear what you have been up to and how well you are doing in your chosen sports. We also like to celebrate your successes and share these on our wall of fame outside the sport hall. So get in touch and share your stories with the sports department and you might find yourself on the wall of fame.
PGL Netball Tournament
I am delighted to inform you that P.E. department are planning a weekend residential netball tournament in October 2018. We are looking to take at least 2 netball teams which will consist of girls from Year 7 and 8.
The trip will be running from
Friday 12th Oct and return on
Sunday 14th Oct 2018. The cost of
this residential weekend will be
£170. Letters will be given out to
netball players in year 7 and 8.
Sports Day
This year sports day will be held on Thursday 21st June. The format
will be a little different from usual and we will be taking an early
lunch on that day. If you are bringing a lunch from home you might
what to bring a light lunch as you will be running after lunch.
Pupils are also advised to bring in water and sunscreen in case it is
hot and they can also bring in a blanket they wish to sit on it during
the afternoon on the field. All pupils are encouraged to take part in
the sports day and to represent their colleges.
All pupils will attend an assembly in their college areas on the
Monday before sports day to sign up to their events. Pupils must be
in correct school PE kit during sports day.
Rounders
The year 7s played DSTC on Tuesday 15th May. It was their first match and for many the first time that they had played with the other girls from other colleges. During the first innings the girls from Longfield Academy demonstrated excellent batting skills and were able to put this to good use. The Longfield Academy team also showed some great fielding skills during DSTC’s first innings and were able to get 3 players out using great catching skills and quick thinking. Going into the second innings the girls from Longfield were in the lead, but due to some bowling errors DSTC were quickly catching up. At the end of the game the scores were DSTC 5 - Longfield 7 ½ rounders. A Great win for the first game of the season. Well done girls!
Year 7 rounders team.
Fixtures - Super 8s
Super 8s is a team athletic event that our year 7s take part in. It is a fun and exciting event that bridges the gap from primary athletics to secondary athletics. Each competitor takes part in one track event and one field event and a relay. This year we took two teams to the event, that was held at Dartford Grammar School for Boys, on Thursday 17th May. Both teams were selected because of their outstanding performance and commitment in their pe lessons. Some of the standout performances came from Elysis Michel -Sims, who ran an amazing 200m followed by an excellent performance in the javelin, with a throw of 14.95m. Also Harry who came 1st in the 100m with a time of 13.72 sec. Overall the boys came 5th in the boys event and the girls came 3rd in the girls event. Well done to all who took part!
Uniform
Just a reminder that pupils need to bring in and change into their pe kit for all lessons regardless to whether or not they are taking part. If a pupil is unwell or injured a letter is required from a parent or guardian explaining what the problem is and the teacher will find a suitable role for the pupil to participate in during the lesson. Failure to bring kit and get changed for a pe lesson will result in a detention. If a pupil has forgotten their kit we do have some spare tops, that are washed and available for the pupils to borrow. This will allow the pupil to take part in the lesson. From September 2018 all old kit will need to be replaced with the new PE kit. We will not be accepting any alternative items of clothing. We expect all pupils to be dressed in the correct Academy pe kit. This is available from Brigade.uk.com
On the 16th May students and staff within the Spectrum Centre organised a tea party for elderly residents who live within the local community.
Staff and students from the Centre have carried out a number of community events within the school and for this event it was decided that it would be organised and supported by young people in Year 7, 8 and 9. Invitations were personally delivered to those people we felt would gain from the experience as well as our local community wardens and PCSO. The event included lunch provided by the staff and students from the professional cookery course as well as a free raffle and entertainment.
The response from those in attendance was fantastic with many visitors commenting on how much they had enjoyed their two hours spent talking and interacting with the year 7, 8 and yr 9 students who supported the event.
Well done to everyone involved, it was a very successful intergenerational event.
We still have sunflower seeds for sale, so if you
would like to purchase some please visit the
spectrum centre.
Geography trip
On Friday 27th April geography
students from Longfield
Academy went to Strood
Academy to attend a Geography
revision conference that was led
by examiners and authors of the
core text books.
We were there along with other
students from the other trust
schools. The day was very
helpful and covered the key
concepts that we had learnt in
class along with excellent
examination tips, especially for
paper 3!
It was a good day and very
helpful in the lead up to the
exams.
On Monday 21st May, some very lucky year 7 students went with Mrs Cripps and
Mrs Desforges to Wilmington Academy for the launch of the WHSmith Book Club.
Not only was Tom Fletcher from McFly compèring the event but we got the opportunity to see 10 other authors too.
Year 11s queue up for ice cream to celebrate their last day.
Year 12 Art Trip
Recently the yr 12 Art and Photography students have had the opportunity to be able to visit University of Kent's
school of Fine Art to view the 3rd year degree show. The students were able to network with the degree show
students and were given a guided tour, participating in performances and interactive artwork. Not only did the
students gain lots of inspiration from the artwork, but they were able to discuss their own work with the
University and are keen to keep a relationship with the university students in order to help them progress with
their own work.
