FRENCH TEACHER INSTITUTESUMMER 2018

French teachers are invited to participate in the 2018 French Teacher Summer Institute. The main purpose of the institute is to help French teachers in the public schools refresh, improve, or acquire qualifications in French culture, teaching, and language. It will be the ideal opportunity for teachers in the French Bridge Program to prepare to teach classes about Paris. Some courses will focus on Bridge Program content. The institute will include three weeks of study on BYU campus plus three and a half weeks of study and travel in France. In France, we will live in Paris and spend about five days visiting other French cities. Participants may make arrangements to bring a spouse to the in-France segment.

HOUSINGIn Provo, lodging and meals are the responsibility of program participants. (Contact Professor Erickson for lodging suggestions.)In Paris, participants will stay in shared apartments in a long-stay hotel with kitchens, Wi-Fi, and access to a laundry.On excursions, we will stay in tourist hotels.

COURSESParticipants must enroll in at least six graduate-level credit hours. (Contact Professor Erickson for course overviews.)

MANDATORY: SLaT 611 Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills OR French 690R Principles for Language Teachers (3 credit hours). This “cross-listed” course will focus on theory and best-teaching practices and provide opportunities to select/collect and organize materials for teaching and assessing oral and listening comprehension skills.MANDATORY: SLaT 613 Teaching and Learning about Culture OR French 620R Advanced Studies in French Culture (3 credit hours). This “cross-listed” course will also address theory and best-teaching practices and provide opportunities to collect materials to help students learn about French cultures. (French Bridge Teachers will be able to focus their study on Paris.)

OPTIONAL: French 690R Advanced Oral and Written Communication (2 credit hours). This course includes a significant online component that participants must complete before coming to BYU campus.

COST$3,700–4,200 (initial estimate). This includes graduate tuition, books, lodging, a food allowance in France, transportation in France, entrance fees for programmed visits, and international health insurance coverage. It does not include lodging and food in Provo, airfare, airport shuttles, or cost of meals above the food allowance in France. Participants who are not members of the LDS Church pay an additional $1,720 for non-LDS graduate tuition.

PREPARATIONYou should be a practicing high-school or junior-high-school French language teacher in Fall 2018. All teachers who are accepted into the program must participate in both on-campus and in-France phases. Spouses may accompany participants on the in-France phase without paying tuition and enrolling in courses. (Contact Professor Robert Erickson, for cost and details.)

FUNDING SOURCESA generous donor provides funds to keep the cost of the French Teacher Institute reasonable. The Department of French and Italian and the Center for Language Studies also financially support this program.

APPLICATION PROCESS IMPORTANT: Space is limited. To facilitate planning the in-France phase of the program, you should contact the

institute director, Professor Robert Erickson, to express your interest as early as possible—preferably well before the end of 2017. He will give you more details about the program, instructions for completing the online application, and the payment plan.

As is the case for all BYU International Study Programs, participants need to arrange for an ecclesiastical endorsement. Participants are expected to follow BYU standards of dress and conduct during the program.

FACULTYProfessor Robert Erickson, Assistant Professor of French and Associate Director for Curriculum and Instruction of the Center for Language Studies will direct the institute. He will teach classes on campus and direct travel and study in France.

SCHEDULE AND TIME COMMITMENT 25 June Classes start on BYU Campus. We will not meet on weekends or on July 4th. 13 July Last day of classes on campus. 18 July Participants meet in Paris for orientation. 30 July–3 August Excursion to selected cities in France. 10 August Last day of program in Paris. 13 August Participants leave long-stay hotel in Paris. (Participants may leave Paris earlier if required.) 22 August Last day to submit work.
