LARGE GROUP

Time: 15 minutes

Big Idea: Jesus’ love changes us.

Supplies: None

Video:

● God’s Story / Zacchaeus (youtube.com/watch?v=Fe7dTNID6h8&t=39s)

Notes:

SET UP EXPECTATIONS

● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad to have you here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

INTRODUCE THE BIG IDEA

● Say: Today we’re talking about a guy who very unpopular, and he didn’t have very many friends. In fact, most people in town hated him, because he was a tax collector and took money from them. They thought he was mean, and greedy, and that he didn’t care about anybody.

● Say: His name was Zacchaeus, and even though everyone else avoided him…Jesus did the opposite. He reached out to Zacchaeus, and showed him love! And because of that, Zacchaeus changed!

● Say: So here’s today’s BIG IDEA: Jesus’ love changes us.

ZACCHAEUS

● Say: One day, Zacchaeus heard Jesus was coming to his hometown, Jericho. He had probably heard all about Jesus and how he was doing miracles and changing people’s lives. He really wanted to see Him!

● Say: We’re going to watch a video about what happened next. As you watch, see if you can figure out how Zacchaeus changes after experiencing Jesus’ love.

● Video: God’s Story / Zacchaeus● Say: Imagine how shocked Zacchaeus was when JESUS

walked right up to HIM. I bet he was wondering why Jesus would choose him over the others! What did Zacchaeus do when he realized Jesus wanted to spend time with him and be his friend? (Let kids respond.) That’s right, he came down and accepted Jesus’ friendship.

● Ask: Before Zacchaeus met Jesus, what was he like? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he was unkind, he took people’s money, and nobody liked him. How would you describe Zacchaeus AFTER he met Jesus? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he decided he wanted to treat other people well. He wanted to be a good friend. He had stolen money; now he was going to give it away!

SET UP GAME TIME

● Say: None of us are perfect...we all have flaws, just like Zacchaeus! But no matter what wrong choices we make, Jesus has the power to help us change. Let’s do an activity to help us remember how Jesus’ love changes us!

Game time

Time: 10 minutes

Big Idea: Jesus’ love changes us.

Supplies:

Video: 10-Minute Countdown Timer

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split kids into small groups.

HOW TO PLAY

● Tell kids that you’re going to call out something, and they have to physically CHANGE their body into that specific thing. They have to stay in that position for as long as you say (have shorter pauses in between some commands, and longer pauses in between some commands.)

● Call out the following:○ Make yourself a rock. Make yourself a bird. Make

yourself a table. Make yourself an elephant. Make yourself a mountain. Make yourself a rabbit. Make yourself a piece of paper. Make yourself a tree. Make yourself a balloon. Make yourself a starfish.

● Now tell kids that you’re going to call out some things that might be a bit harder to act out:

○ Make yourself mean. Make yourself lonely. Make yourself loving. Make yourself sad. Make yourself happy. Make yourself silly!

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer.● Stay in small groups.● Ask:

○ How did you have to “change” throughout the game? ○ What ways do we change on the outside? (Hair, size,

clothes, height, etc.)○ What ways do we change on the inside?

● Say: Zacchaeus changed because Jesus showed him love, and we can do the same thing!

● Do: Show the following images (in order) and ask kids what parts of the story it reminds them of:

○ Zacchaeus (ask kids about what he was like; he was mean, shorter than most people, etc.)

○ Money (he stole people’s money)○ Angry face (people were mean to him; nobody liked him,

he was mean to others)○ Tree (he wanted to see Jesus, so he climbed a tree)○ Food (Jesus went to his house for dinner!)○ Heart (Jesus LOVED Zacchaeus; Zacchaeus was

changed by Jesus’ love: he started being nice to people and became a part of God’s family)

COOL DOWN TIME

Time: 10 minutes

Big Idea: Jesus’ love changes us.

Supplies: ● Story images (1 set

of 6 per small group)

● 10-Second Countdown Timer

● The Ballad of Zacchaeus (youtube.com/watch?v=WKNxv9oaHyg)

● You Are (youtube.com/watch?v=2kf7f86EzTA)

Notes:

TRANSITION STRETCH

● Say: Everyone take a second and and do 5 jumping jacks, but in SLOW motion, as slow as you possibly can!

● Play the 10-Second Countdown Timer

JESUS KNOWS US INSIDE AND OUT

● Ask: WHY did Zacchaeus change? (Let kids respond.) Yes, because he met Jesus, and Jesus showed him love! Do you think Jesus told Zacchaeus that he was mean and he would never be a good person, just like everybody else always told him? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Let’s read a verse to see what Zacchaeus said, and how Jesus’ love changed him:

● Slide: Matthew 19:8 Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

● Say: That’s incredible! Zacchaeus went WAY above and beyond, and changed from being greedy and unkind, to giving away all his money!

● Say: And you know what? Jesus wants the same for us! Jesus wants us to know that we are children of God, who he loves more than anything else in the world! We are loved, we are free, and we can follow him.

● Say: Everybody take a minute to think about one way that you want to change. It could be anything! Maybe it’s really hard for you to be nice to your brother or sister, and you need Jesus to help you be kind instead. Maybe you feel sad sometimes, and you need Jesus to help you have joy. Whatever it is, ask Jesus to help change you right now, inside your head. (Give kids a minute to respond.)

WORSHIP AND PRAYER

● Say: Now, we’re going to watch a fun music video about Zacchaeus that will help us remember just how much he changed, all because of Jesus!

● Music Video: The Ballad of Zacchaeus● Say: Let’s check out a special worship video that’s all about

how Jesus is always here for us, and we don’t need to be afraid! You can watch as you sit, or get up, left your hands, dance and sing!

● Music Video: You Are● Pray: God, thank you for creating us and giving us our own

unique, special identity. We’re so glad you sent Jesus to the world, to help us see how much you love us. Amen!

SMALL GROUPS

SMALL GROUPS

Time: 15 minutes (or until parent pick up)

Big Idea: Jesus’ love changes us.

Next Step: Identify one thing you want Jesus to change in you.

Supplies: ● Tree image (1/kid)● Popsicle stick (1/kid)● Zacchaeus image

(1/kid)● Yarn (1 piece/kid)● Markers and

scissors (1 set of each/group)

● Tape (1 roll/small group)

● Hole punch (1/small group)

● Bible (1/group)

EXTRA TIME?

● Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

PRAY

● Ask kids if there’s anything they want you to pray for, and then pray as a group.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION

● Go around the group and let every kid answer this question: Who’s your favorite friend to play with?

RESPOND TO THE STORY

● What was Zacchaeus like before he met Jesus? (Mean, greedy, stole money, not a good friend, etc.)

● What was Zacchaeus like AFTER he met Jesus? (He became kinder, gave money away and was a more loving person who follows Jesus!)

● Can Jesus’ love change US too? What ways can we change?

MAKE IT PERSONAL

● Give each kid a tree image, popsicle stick, a Zacchaeus image, and a piece of yarn.

● Set out markers, scissors and tape.○ Let kids color Zacchaeus and cut out the tree shape. ○ Tape the tree shape to the top of the popsicle stick.○ As kids work:

■ Go around and use a hole punch to put a hole somewhere in the top of the tree (if they’re old enough, they can do this themselves).

■ Tape the piece of yarn to Zacchaeus, and put it through the hole, so that Zacchaeus “climbs” up the tree as you pull the string up.

● Next, act it out! Read it from Luke 19:1-10 and help kids use their props (and themselves, if you want) to reenact the story.
