FROM: Stephen Smith: NATIONAL CAMPING SCHOOL DIRECTOR
[email protected] (907) 452-1976
Welcome to the 2018 National Camping School held at beautiful Camp Meriwether on the Pacific coast of Oregon. If you haven’t been
to Camp Meriwether or the Oregon coast before, you’re in for a real treat.
Your application has been received and on behalf of the National camping school faculty, we eagerly look forward to having you with us at
Camp Meriwether. We are looking forward to working with you to deliver a dynamic program for Scouts attending your camp.
Medical Form
You are required to bring with you an Annual Medical Examination and Health Record (Parts A, B, & C), completed within the past 12
months. You cannot participate in the school without it and there are few physicians close by to accommodate last minute requests. (And it
will cost you more than $100). A link to the form can be found below.
Arrival and Departure
Please plan to arrive between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. PST on Saturday, June 9, 2018. We will not be prepared to check you in until Saturday
morning at 9:00 AM. Departure will be by 11:00 AM Friday, June 15, 2018.
National Camp School is not prepared to accommodate early arrivals unless you are notified to arrive early by your Section Director. If your
travels require you to arrive earlier then your section demands, please know there is no meal service. The nearest town is Tillamook, Oregon
about 30 minutes away.
Uniform
National Camp School participants and faculty are required to dress in official BSA field uniform while participating at National Camp School.
The National Camp School Director and your section director may announce times when it is appropriate to wear Scout polo shirts and or tee
shirts during the course, but full field uniform is required for evening meals, worship services, campfires, and other formal activities as
announced. Complete Scout uniform consists of official BSA shorts or pants, socks, and short or long sleeve Scout shirt. Both Boy Scout
and Venturing uniforms are acceptable, as long as they are complete. Attached is a uniform inspection sheet to help plan your uniform.
Camp Meriwether is a coastal camp with cool evening and morning breezes along with west fog and mist even on clear days. Plan
accordingly.
Housing
National Camp School participants will be housed in campsites with Adirondacks and bunk beds and no electricity. You should bring a pad,
warm sleeping bag and pillow. Restroom and shower facilities are conveniently located near your campsite.
Transportation
Camp Meriwether is roughly a 2-hour drive from Portland, Oregon. Enclosed is a map and driving directions to Camp Meriwether. In
addition, the host council has made arrangements for ground transportation from and to Portland International Airport (PDX). If you plan to
arrive by air, and need a shuttle to camp, please contact Director of Facilities Bo Henderson at [email protected] well in advance
of your trip. There is a $60.00 fee for roundtrip transportation to and from Camp Meriwether which will be billed directly to your council
after NCS. For arrival, shuttles will depart from PDX at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Friday, June 8th and 9:00 AM on Saturday, June 9th.
Shuttle groups for departure will be determined at camp school. Please provide your flight number and arrival time as well as a contact
phone number. Confirmation will be made via email and phone both upon receipt of the request and 24 hours prior to arrival.
Communication
Cellular telephone service is reasonably good in many parts of camp, and you may charge your device in either the dining hall or shower
building. You may call or contact me at 907-452-1976 for general questions about NCS. For emergencies only, please call the Cascade
Pacific Council office at 503-226-3423 during business hours or Bo Henderson at 360-600-7210 after hours.
Trading Post
Lastly, there will be a trading post available during your time at National Camp School. We will provide NCS branded items, as well as
snacks, soft drinks, and a few miscellaneous sundries. If you could like to purchase NCS branded items in advance, visit
