From The Principal Sizzling Start to Term 3 We have had a wonderful start to Term 3 and I am very impressed with how quickly students have settled back into school routines. Classes are working extremely well, particularly in our focus areas of reading and writing this Term. Hopefully you have heard about Sizzling Starts in writing from your children over the last few weeks. If not please attend this week’s parade to find out more and hear some examples of our students writing. Our Literacy coach Mr Brent Heiniger has been running a Sizzling Starts Competition with all classes. Sizzling Starts look at ensuring our writing engages the reader right from the very first sentence. Even our Preppies are doing a great job using action words to start their sentences and loving it. NAPLAN Individual Student Results This week year three and year five students that participated in NAPLAN tests in May will bring home their individual results. If you have any questions around the interpretation of these tests please don’t hesitate to discuss them with your child’s teacher, myself or Paula. Please remember these tests are a point in time test (they indicate what your child achieved on a particular day at a specific test). They are in general a good indicator of where your child sits in relation to other children of the same year level in Australia and provide useful diagnostic data to our school. This data enables us to focus our teaching on future specific content areas and teaching strategies. Eligible for Prep If your child is turning 5 by the 30 June 2016 (i.e. born between 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011) they are eligible for Prep next year. Prep is the first year of school and provides the foundation for your child’s education. foundation for your child's education (http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/FoundationYear?layout=1 ).

These days will be held on: Wednesday 4 Nov 9:00 -10:30 Wednesday 11 Nov 9:00 – 10:30 Wednesday 18 Nov 9:00 – 10:30 Students are required to have enrolled before attending our transition days and must attend with an adult. Glasshouse District Sports Congratulations to all our students that represented our school at the District Track and Field last Thursday and Friday. Students that have made the District team to compete in the Regional Track and Field will be announced at Tuesday’s parade. Welcome Back Sharon We welcome Sharron Furlong back as our on-site Special Education Program Coordinator this week after a period of absence. Sharon’s husband was involved in a serious motorcycle accident on ANZAC Day and Sharon has been on leave to care for Mark who we are pleased to say is recovering well. We continue to wish Mark well with his continuing recovery process. P&C I am so impressed with the quality of parents that make up our P&C and the time they devote to making our school better for your children. It is great to see some new faces coming along to meetings. Many parents that come along often say, “I never realised how much our P&C contributes to the school in terms of services (Uniform shop, Tuckshop, Book Club, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Country Fair, events etc.), resources, funds and support to the community”. Please come along and be part of an enthusiastic and positive team at our next meeting at 6:30pm on Wednesday the 12 August.
Parent Teacher Interviews It has been great to see so many parents taking advantage of our parent teacher interviews over the last couple of weeks. These face to face meetings build on parent, teacher, child relationships and allow a more personal communication and information exchange around your children. If you missed this opportunity please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with your child’s teacher in the future.
SWPBS - This week we are focussing on the rule Be Responsible. The 4 Be catch phrase is “Quiet Feet, Quiet Mouths” This means:
I keep noise to a minimum
I walk on concrete
I use a talking voice
I move around the school quietly
I follow adult directions
I model sensible behaviour
I give way to adults
I move quickly and quietly between classrooms / lessons
I return from play in a respectful manner
I leave and enter parade respectfully
Woolworths Earn and Learn If you are a Woolworth’s shopper be aware they are once again running their Earn and Learn promotion. For every $10 you spend you will get 1 Earn & Learn Sticker. Stick them on a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and pop it into a Collection Box at our school or Woolworths. The number of stickers collected by our school store will translate to the amount of educational resources provide to our school. Farm Fest Champions Congratulations to Keelee, Seanna and Kael T who came second in the two hour team challenge at Farm Fest. The girl’s worked together as a team in preparing, grooming and presenting a cow for the ring as well as watering, feeding and maintaining the cow’s bedding. They won a trophy and $300 prize money for our school. The three sisters also participated in and placed highly in the junior handling classes which also contributed points for their school’s overall score. I was amazed by what these three girls could teach me about cattle and the confidence they displayed in handling their animals.

Reading
Hopefully you have had a chance to ask your child/ren which comprehension strategy they have been focussing on in
class and what it means. For some of our classes they are looking at Synthesising. It involves putting together
information from the text with their own prior knowledge to develop new ideas and understandings. It can mean using
your new knowledge to create something like a model or a plan. Synthesising is one of the hardest strategies for
students to learn as many students can use their own prior knowledge and find new knowledge, but the next step of
doing something with that new understanding is hard for them to piece together.
Questions you can use at home to help your child/ren synthesise include:
Has your thinking changed since reading this text?
How can you use what you have read to create your own ideas?
After reading this text has it made you think? What is your new understanding?
How else could you use your information?
Can the connections you made reading this text help you to create a generalisation about the information in the text?
Can the connections you made reading this text help you gain a new perspective on…?
How did what you know change after you read this text?
How does the information from this text fit in with what you read in…?
When you look at your notes on this topic, what do you think about it?
Writing
As you know we have a school wide focus for writing. For week’s 4 and 5 is: Tightening
Tension TIGHTENING TENSION Students are being assisted to engage the reader’s heart and emotions and gradually build up tension by making each step in the text they are writing more difficult and saving the best moment for the climax. The secret to tension is the real possibility of failure and starting small and allowing the story to escalate to a powerful climax. Students will be trying to appeal to all of the reader’s emotions. Showing their readers what to see, hear, touch, taste, smell and feel.
Lost Property
If you are missing belongings please take the time to check out our lost property area, which is under the stairs of B
Block (the stairs closest to Mr. Faulkner’s room) There are many jumpers, hats and lunch boxes waiting to be
reclaimed. At the end of the term any property not claimed will be donated to Charity.
Mountain View Challenge
At Tuesday’s parade, Mike and Helen from the Lions Club spoke to the children about the upcoming Mountain View
Challenge. For further information about registering for this event please go to the following website.

Maleny State School is the current trophy holders of the Primary Schools Challenge.
Classroom News News from Year 3 / 4 Well we are all very excited as we are investigating space for science. We have completed some experiments where we could see why day and night occur. Many of the students are bringing in interesting books and models of the solar system. We learnt a rhyme to remember the order of the planets from the sun. We also waited all week for the sun to come out so we could set up a sundial and we drew the shadow and recorded the time during the day. Another interesting activity was when we looked at our own shadow and watched how it changed in length over the day. We also worked in small groups to test materials to see if they were transparent, translucent or opaque. In English we are reading traditional stories from Asia and looking at the message that is being given. Matthew and Campbell worked very hard to complete their own bionic robot. The class was very impressed. Kind Regards Lou and Trish
4B News We have had a wonderful start to term 3 - congratulations kids!
The children have been doing their ‘Sizzling Starts’ and have been producing some sensational starts indeed! There is also the school Sizzling Starts competition that we have been entering into. In maths we have had a huge focus on fractions, so if you are cutting up a pizza, cake or baking at home talk about the fractions because our understanding is constantly improving and would love to share it with you. Art- We are in the middle of creating posters for our 4 Bee Rules and they are looking great, so keep an eye out for them in our room. Year 5 News In year 5 we have been learning about Poetry. We have looked at national anthems from 3 different countries, odes and ballads. Ask us about these Poetic Devices:
Rhyme (words at the end of lines that have the same sounds e.g. Don’t be a fool, go to school),
Rhythm (the beat e.g.- Tick, Tock, goes the clock),
Alliteration (the same letter/sound at the start of words which are close together e.g. Funny furry fox),
Neologisms (made up words e.g.- schwiz ),
Personification (giving a nonliving thing the ability to do things- the wind howled)
Similes (compares 2 words using “like” or “as” e.g. - as intelligent as 5A or Tallis runs like a cheetah.)
Onomatopoeia (words that sound like the sound that they make e.g.- Kerplunk and ) In Science we are investigating light. So far we have experimented with light sources, shadows and the amount of light transparent, translucent and opaque objects let through.
Written by Kayla, Hannah, Chloe and some extra information from 5A.
Year 6 Senior Shirts We are pleased to share our new senior shirts with you, don’t they look great?

2015 Glasshouse District Athletics Trials
Recently, at the Glasshouse District Athletics Carnival, 52 students from Maleny State School impressed everyone with a fantastic display of individual and team prowess. The Maleny athletes performed very well achieving great results across the two day carnival. Determined efforts in many of the events saw our athletes record personal best times and distances in many disciplines. This resulted in a swag of top placings in strongly contested events. The relays were a real highlight with Maleny athletes coordinating their change overs well and showing blistering pace in each leg to give their teams the winning edge. All these fantastic efforts resulted in Maleny State School coming 4th overall out of 10 schools. Maleny came 2nd in the march past award and placed 3rd in the aggregate trophy, for the average point’s trophy, for the best results based on school population. Well done Maleny! Congratulations to the following students from Maleny who achieved Age Champion or Runner Up awards. Age Champions: Sam D (11yr boys) Runners-Up: Isabella P (9 yr girls) & Noah B (10 yr boys) The next step for some of our 10, 11 and 12 year old athletes is to participate in the Sunshine Coast Regional Athletics Trials at the Sunshine Coast University on Tuesday 8th September & Wednesday 9th September. We wish the following athletes who have qualified, all the best at the trials: Noah B, Riley T, Max H, Dan J, Taleta M, Kirra S, Sam D, Dylan C, Ben

Music News
Music Notes
This term I have again hired ‘Humarimbas’ for the students of the senior classes to practise and develop their
practical music skills. The ‘Humarimba’ is a musical instrument’ and invention of musician Linsey Pollak.
The instrument is essentially a modified type of marimba which uses people as the frame of the instrument.
Not only is it fun to play, but a very social activity as the music making is designed to have up to four people
performing different parts/ harmony on the instrument at once.
The students in the junior school will be exploring music elements while studying various well known
orchestral works.
School Concert
This year’s School Concert will be held during the last week of this term, on Wednesday 16th
September. The
evening’s entertainment will include year level performances, solo and small group acts. Please add the date
to your Diary and support our children’s artistic endeavours!

P & C News Chocolate Drive coming soon – to upgrade playground fitness equipment Look out for letters coming home soon and via email asking for your support to sell a box of Freddos for the Chocolate Drive. Monies raised will go towards a much needed upgrade of the playground fitness equipment. One of the most lucrative fundraisers around, every box sold earns $20 for the P&C. If we sell 200 boxes, we get $4,000 towards new equipment. Let’s do it! Father’s Day Stall – 3 September P&C will be running a Father’s Day stall fundraiser on Thursday 3 September. Like the Mother’s Day stall, children can purchase a special something for dads, carers or grandads. Gifts will be mostly $5 or $10 each. No donations required for this one. We need you! The P&C run various activities throughout the year and always needs the help of volunteers (in addition to Tuckshop and Uniform Shop). Our upcoming fundraisers - Chocolate Drive, Father’s Day Stall and the Country Fair – all need people to help on stalls, collect money etc. If you can help share the load, even for just a couple of hours, please email your name, and phone number to [email protected] as soon as possible so we can get in touch as needed. IGA CBC members - quote your CBC number. Don’t forget to quote your Community Benefit Club (CBC) number at the IGA every time you shop, with 1% of purchases going to support the school if nominated. We can raise large amounts with little effort if people get behind it. Next P&C Meeting – Wednesday 12 August 6.30pm in the School Library. All parents and community members welcome. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 6.30pm. Anita Edmonds P&C President [email protected]
Chappy’s Thoughts Keep Pressing On! I read a quote the other day by a man called Oliver Goldsmith and he said, “Our greatest glory consists not in never falling but rising every time we fall.” I’ve seen so much truth in that statement in my own life personally and it is something that I feel passionate about encouraging children in. In my role as chaplain I often have opportunities to encourage children to keep trying, to keep giving their best even when they are confronted with failure. I think as parents we are always going to be faced with situations that test us. Not only does the person who gets it wrong have to get up and try again, but there is a necessary acknowledgement of forgiveness that needs to be shown to encourage that ‘getting up.’ As a parent I am learning to demonstrate to my children the power of forgiveness and giving them opportunities to try again at whatever they failed at. Unless children are encouraged and shown the importance of rising every time they fall, they will struggle into their adult years to believe they are capable of achieving greatness. So whatever you may have failed at, get up and try again, and try again and try again! Karaoke on a Wednesday is proving a very fun activity. Please remind your children who are interested to fill in the sign-up sheet on the Hall door. Any parents, who are interested in helping with games on a Tuesday or Karaoke on the Wednesday, please come and see me. I would love parent involvement. Have a great week.
