European Healthcare InitiativeOur objectives
• To promote– reduced patient risk– greater supply chain efficiency – identification, bar coding & scanning (ADC)– e-business techniques– EAN.UCC System– European healthcare supply chains
• from manufacturer to patient
• To make things happen– by working with the industry & key stakeholders
Operation Meeting
MIS EMEA Montreux SwitzerlandCreated and presented by Jorge GarciaDate 7th of January
Our Focus• The supply chain – from manufacturer to patient• Pharmacy and biologics
– hospitals– community pharmacies– within the community
• Medical devices– Assistive technologies– Medical surgical
• Services– Food, cleaning, laundry, etc
• Addressing the real issues– Supply chain efficiency– Risk management
Operation Meeting

The Benefits• Improved supply chain efficiency
– administrative cost reduction– reduced stock levels– greater information transparency
• Reduced patient risk– certainty of unique identification– automatic data capture – remove human
intervention• Tracking and traceability

Value Proposition for European Healthcare
• Neutral & independent – not-for-profit• Unique system of identification
– Products, locations, logistics units, assets, patients • Multi-sector applicability; global System• Proven, world-wide – 27 year track record• Scale of use• Future proof
– Meets the needs of the healthcare market today– Track and traceability, batch number, expiry date …– Reduced Space Symbology & Radio Frequency tagging
• ‘On the ground’ support network through Membership Organisations
Operation Meeting
MIS EMEA Montreux SwitzerlandCreated and presented by Jorge GarciaDate 7th of January
Reduced Space Symbology
• Identification of pharmaceuticals in the future• Food and Drug Administration – proposed rule for
unit doses and biologics• From the supply chain down the unit of use
Operation Meeting
MIS EMEA Montreux SwitzerlandCreated and presented by Jorge GarciaDate 7th of January
Radio Frequency Identification
• Another form of data carrier– Needs global standardisation– Frequency, distance ………
• EAN.UCC working closely with MIT/Auto-ID Center– Establish Auto-ID Inc, now EPCglobal – Develop and market EPC
• EAN International General Assembly approved the EPC initiative early September– Likely to address supply chain applications initially e.g. pallet and
case level – Consumer unit level will follow over time: cost & privacy!

Our proposal to the European Pharmaceutical Industry
• EAN International collaborates with all major European industry bodies – As part of the European Healthcare Initiative
• EAN and the industry create a European-wide supply chain initiative
• Develop an industry-wide ‘framework of harmonised supply chain standards for Europe’ – for the industry, by the industry– Identification– Bar coding & label marking– Electronic messaging
• Adopt high-profile promotional position
Operation Meeting
MIS EMEA Montreux SwitzerlandCreated and presented by Jorge GarciaDate 7th of January
European Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Working Group
• All functions of the supply chain• The group will consider all aspects of supply chain
automation –– the unique identification of items, such as units of use, consumer
packs, traded units, logistics units, locations and others;– symbolisation of identifiers through bar coding e.g. EAN-13,
UCC/EAN-128 and RSS / CS– electronic message formats for customer-supplier communication
• Timescales– With pace but practical and achievable
Operation Meeting
MIS EMEA Montreux SwitzerlandCreated and presented by Jorge GarciaDate 7th of January
European Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Working Group
• Build on existing globally known and used data structures and data carriers to improve the physical flow between manufacturers and wholesalers
• Leverage other industries/countries experiences• Leverage suppliers existing implementations for their
deliveries in FMCG sector• Identify early supply chain ‘wins’
– Cost/benefit based
• Phased implementation– wholesaler implement barcode scanning at stock entry??
• Develop cost/benefit models for industry-wide promotion & implementation

The opportunity for DAFNE• Widen the scope of The Board to embrace
automatic data collection as well as automatic data transfer (via EDI)
• Adopt the EAN.UCC System of identification and bar coding as well as messaging (EANCOM / ebXML)
• Form representative supply chain group to– Collaborate, working closely with EAN Italy (INDICOD-
ECR) – develop a standard framework of ID, bar coding and
electronic messaging for Italy– Drive adoption– Leverage European and other national initiatives
