Snapchat Warning

Social media service Snapchat has introduced a new tracker in its latest update allowing people to see the exact location of their friends. The update allows you to see the exact area, town, street and even house in the street of any user. Some parents groups are warning that this could pose a risk to youngsters and leave them exposed to predators. The update automatically has location sharing switched on unless users switch to 'ghost mode'. If your son/daughter is using Snapchat, please check that they have their location set to ‘ghost mode’, that way no one can see where they are. To do this make sure the app is the updated version and go to selfie mode on the camera, then zoom out. It will give you the option of changing to who can see your location. The link below shows students how to use ‘ghost mode’ and hide their location.

Using ‘ghost mode’ In light of these recent changes to Snapchat, please click here to read the Parents Guide to Snapchat

Musical.ly

Musical.ly is a free social network app popular for viewing and creating short music videos, known as ‘Musical.ly’s’. Children can select a song from thousands available on the app and record themselves singing, lip-syncing (miming) or dancing along to their chosen song. One of the aims of Musical.ly is to create your own following or fan base. Musical.ly includes ‘coins’ and virtual gifts that users can give to other users in order to increase their popularity. Once recorded, videos can be shared via other social networking apps, such as WhatsApp or Facebook. Musical.ly’s age restrictions within their terms of service are unclear. They state that the service is “not for anyone under the age of 13 but that by using the service, the user affirms that they are 18 years of age or have been authorised to use the service by a parent or guardian”. The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) works across the UK providing advice for parents and young people. They have seen an increase in the popularity of this app amongst young people. As a result, they have created a guide for parents to help them understand more about Musical.ly and its features. Please click here to view the Parents’ Guide.
