* How Do We Develop Counter Claims?

We look at both sides equally

We collect evidence and create claims for both sides

We look at the claims and ask “What are the reasons to agree with the claim?” “Now, why are those reasons wrong or not logical?”

*Role PlayingTeenager: Mom, can I stay out later tonight. Mom: What?Teenager: I know what you are going to say, you are going to say no. Mom: Exactly, so why are you asking?Teenager: And I know your reasons. You think that it is a school night and I will be tired and you think that the only things that happen after 9pm are bad things. Right?Mom: Looks like you can read my mind.Teenager: And any smart person would agree at first but that is before they knew that I am staying out to study for my Algebra exam and the library that has the special calculators that I need to practice is very crowded until 8:00pm on weeknights so I am going to stay home and wash the dishes until then. Also, Jess’ mom is coming with us. Mom: Oh, well, uh…

Analysis

Many people argue that aliens do not exist. Those who argue this often point to the fact that we do not have real evidence of alien life existing on the earth since no one has definitely seen an alien. Though it is true that no one on earth has been able to prove that they have seen an alien that does not mean that they don’t exist, it simply means that we haven’t been in contact with aliens. According to world famous scientist, Stephen Hawking, “a universe with 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of millions of stars, it is unlikely that earth is the only place where life has evolved.” Hawking says that” "I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach." This clearly shows that although we haven’t seen aliens it isn’t a definite that they aren’t out there somewhere. In fact, this evidence means that if we did see them, we may not live to tell about it.
