“Gardening Together, Growing Together– Let’s Share!”

Lenda Jablonski, President

We continue our 2018/2019 Garden Club year with the idea of growing together through gardening and sharing our ideas and thoughts on how to increase our membership, encourage new friendships and share our love and knowledge of gardening with others.

Favorite events will be supported by the Garden Club this year.

Collaborate with the Dataw Island Yacht club and the Dataw Historic Foundation to celebrate the Light Up the Night, our annual kick off to the holidays.

Add to the holiday feeling by creating bows for landscape departments use to decorate around the island.

Conduct plant sales for the spring, fall and holiday time

Participate in the Homes for the Holidays Tour to be held on Dataw in 2018 by decorating the Cannery and ruins area.

The Garden Club will continue our involvement in many of the activities outside the gates of our community. Beaufort National Cemetery plantings Decorate a tree for the Caroline Hospice Festival of Trees Design arrangements for the Historic Beaufort Foundation Fall Festival of Houses

Encourage independence though landscaping for Habitat for Humanity homes

Create holiday cheer for children served by the Franciscan Center, St Helena Island

Invite a friend or new resident to a Garden Club meeting and program. Welcome new members when you see them on the island and continue to share garden stories and ideas with others.

Enjoy this year with the Garden Club as we Garden Together and Grow Together.

Let’s Shareby Sandi Fischer, Guest Inspiration Writer

One of the first things we learned as children about being part of a family or a community was the importance of sharing. That’s important for garden clubs, too. This year’s Dataw Garden Club theme is — “Gardening together, growing together, let’s share”.So how can that happen? By members “digging” in and — • Sharing knowledge

People with education and training can share what they have learned through programs, demonstrations, workshops, and handouts.

• Sharing plants and seedsDividing extra plantings or seeds is an excellent way we can “grow” bigger gardens.

• Sharing ideasCommunicating new concepts about all things gardening can help members try new techniques.

• Sharing skillsFrom methodology to design, members who have the “know how” can show others “how.”

• Sharing experienceThose who have learned through “trial and error” or “tried and true” gardening experiences can share so others won’t make the same mistakes.

• Sharing ourselvesWhat better way can we enhance the spirit of community than through spending time together — at meetings, on a project, in service or by just-for-fun socializing!

It’s the begining of the Dataw Garden Club year. Let’s garden and grow together. Let’s share!

Background and Description of the Dataw Garden ClubIn 1987 a few of Dataw’s lady gardeners formed the Dataw Island Garden Club. They met in member’s homes or at the Cannery and had to limit membership because of the limited space for seating. Because more women wanted to join then the Dataw Island Garden Club had room for, in 1989 the Dataw Oaks Garden Club was formed and also met in member‘s homes or the Cannery. After the “Oaks” had a popular and successful garden show, the membership grew and the two clubs decided to become one club. In 1993, the Dataw Island Garden Club and the Dataw Oaks Garden Club merged to form the Dataw Garden Club. Members met in the dining room or upstairs in what is now the Tabby Room.

Hydrangeas — Getting Beyond the Mop Head

spEAKERWill Balk Jr., Master Gardener

Will Balk, Jr. is well known in the Beaufort SC area because of his almost two decades at the old Bay Street Trading Bookstore downtown, or from his years as President of the Lowcountry Master Gardener Association. For the last four years, Will has been one of three contributing columnists for the Lowcountry Weekly newspaper, sharing duties with Alice Massey and Laura Lee Rose. Will served on the Community Advisory Council for the Clemson Extension Service and staffed the Community Service desk at the Extension Service for several years, providing essential assistance to farmers and home gardeners in three counties.

It’s all in his blood. Will grew up on the 3000 acre Clemson agricultural research campus at Blackville, where his father spent his professional career and retired as Director of the Research facility. His grandmother and great grandmother in Augusta, Georgia, were both noted gardeners, and Will was turning compost piles in their gardens by the age of five. In high school, Will grew in his garden the strawberries for the school lunch program.

Most recently, in addition to writing about gardening, he is a contributing writer for the international online journal, Weekly Hubris. Will serves on the Board of Directors for South Carolina Humanities and on their executive committee. He is on the Advisory Board for the new Pat Conroy Literary Center here in Beaufort.

Wild Life in the Beaufort County Envionment

spEAKERMegan Stegmeir, Hunting Island Interpretative Ranger

Megan Stegmier was born and raised in Beaufort, South Carp;oma, and always had an interest in nature and animals. After graduating from high school in 2006, Megan decided that she wanted a career where she would be outdoors and interacting with nature on a daily basis. She enrolled in the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Biology program. As she worked her way through college, she started working for the South Carolina State Park Service at Hunting Island State Park as a retail sales clerk in 2010. Megan was ecstatic to learn that Hunting Island had a Nature Center — and from that point on, she knew she wanted to manage the center once she completed her Biology degree.

After receiving her Biology degree from USCB in 2010, she worked at Fripp Island Golf and Beach Resort as their Head Naturalist. After three years, she then accepted an Assistant Park Ranger position with Hunting Island State Park. In 2014, when the Interpretative Ranger position became available, she applied and was awarded that position. As the Interpretative Ranger, Megan manages the park’s nature/recreational programs. She also is responsible for taking care of several different species of animals in the Nature Center and holds one of the permits for the park’s sea turtle conservation program.

In 2015, Megan completed her certification as a Low Country Master Naturalist. On her days off, you can usually find her doing something outside — biking, kayaking, fishing or hiking. She also enjoys spending time with her family and her lovable Boston terrier, Kojak.

The Beauty and Charm of Earth Kind Roses

spEAKERJanet Bura

Janet Bura is a Dataw resident who has many talents. She is an artist and enjoys pottery and gardening. Janet is a talented floral arranger and has fallen in love with Earth Kind Roses. She has agreed to share her love with our Garden Club. She will give us the benefits of these extraordinary roses and also provide the information on how to obtain them for our own gardens.

Janet has always had a love for plants and gardening and has a particular fondness for roses. She lived in California for 10 years and enjoyed the ease of growing roses due to the climate. When she relocated to Dallas, Texas, she discovered a very different experience with growing roses. The extreme heat and humidity made the maintenance of a rose garden very challenging. Upon retiring from Wells Fargo in 2006, she became a Texas Master Gardener — taking the 13 week class and doing the mandatory volunteer work. During this time, Janet had the good fortune to use much of her volunteer hours assisting with rose trials being conducted by Texas A&M. There she discovered “Earth Kind Roses” — she fell in love with the beauty of the roses and the ease of growing and maintaining them.
