On a Mission to Grow the Web of Data
On a Mission to Grow the Web of Data
There is still not enough data
Today the effort of publishing Linked Data far exceeds the payback for data owners
We need to reach a critical mass of Linked Data to make publishing sustainable and rewarding
The obstacles to publishing:
Why shoud I do it?What should my data look like? What tools should I use?How do I know I'm doing it right?
Data Incubator seeks to organise community expertise to remove these obstacles
Infrastructure
Website and use of dataincubator.org subdomains
Google code project and mailing list
Talis Platform for hosting conversions
What else?
Community Expertise
Modelling data
Creating schemas
Scraping and conversion scripts
Identifying cross linking opportunities
Principles
dataincubator.org is a temporary host for converted data. The data needs to end up on the original owner's site
All code, schemas and data to be freely available (public domain if possible)
Use the same tools as the data owner
Challenges
What datasets are most valuable?
How to convince data owners to adopt the work into their processes?
How to educate about licensing?
How to improve communication and collaboration?
Challenges Contd.
How to best demonstrate value of Linked Data back to original data owners?
How to recruit more volunteers?
This presentation is entirely in the public domain
