Belden knows your data center is muchmore than a space that simply houses servers and networkequipment. Fueled by e-commerce and the IP world we live in today, the data center has become themost critical asset – and investment – for nearly every organization. It is truly the operations center ofyour business: housing all the mission-critical applications, equipment and systems you need to enableevery transaction, communication and task; providing the links to customers, business partners andvendors around theworld; and even controlling building environmental, security and life safety systems.

The Challenges of Data Center Design

Faced with the now fundamental importanceof the data center and the need to provide forever-increasing applications, transmission speedsand data storage, businesses are experiencing asignificant upsurge in the amount of equipmenttheir data centers must support. Consequently,IT managers must design scalable data centersto support their future growth and potentiallynew technologies, while ensuring maximumperformance, density andmanageability. At thesame time, the amount of power needed to runthe data center is at an all time high, requiringsufficient cooling and energy efficient solutions.

And as if those challenges weren’t enough, the new economics of IT has put budgets underincreased scrutiny, requiring IT managers toensure ROI and lowest total cost of ownershipwhen selecting data center components.

The Role of theStructured Cabling System

Within the data center, a variety of systemssupport, protect andmanage both current andfuture equipment, the data transmitted, and thethousands of connections between servers andswitches and the outlying areas of the network. These systems include storage, power distribution, cooling, cabling infrastructure, security and fireprotection – and any design decision for one islikely to impact the others. All of these systemsare interrelated andmust be part of a unifiedstructured cabling system. As the foundation ofthe data center, the structured cabling systemshould be designed considering the following:

• It should have the scalability necessary tooutlast two to three generations ofactive equipment

• It should be flexible to facilitatereconfigurations

• It should be highly durable to ensurenetworking performance, reliabilityand availability.

Without a properly designed cablinginfrastructure, the data center is in jeopardy. In fact, independent research indicates thatwhile the cabling infrastructure only represents2 to 5%of a typical IT budget, as much as 50%of network problems are related to an inadequateor underperforming cabling infrastructure.

How Belden Meets YourCabling System Needs

As your data center partner, Belden offersan in-depth knowledge of structured cabling, data center systems and the interaction betweenthem. Belden understands your needs and thedesign challenges you are up against – andwe have leveraged our decades-long expertiseinto the design of highly-flexible, end-to-endstructured cabling systems that are uniquein their ability to provide optimal systemperformance, while simultaneously solvingyour density and manageability issues – bothnow and in the future.

Regardless of your business or size, all datacenters have similar needs, since their goal isthe same: to provide secure and uninterruptedavailability to computing, storage, networkingand communications resources. Recent trendshave further amplified the emphasis on data centeruptime and cost savings, creating a greater needfor performance, density andmanageabilitythan ever before. Belden Data Center Solutionsseamlessly work together tomeet all these needs.

• Performance– Every business todayneeds to support current and futurebandwidth-intensive applications. With thebeyond-standards performance guaranteedby Belden, IT managers have the flexibilityto add capacity, reconfigure connectionsand bring new applications on line withoutsacrificing reliability and headroom.

• Density– The increasing number ofapplications and connections supportedby the data center calls for cost-effective,high-density Belden solutions that are designedto offer scalability by yieldingmore rack, pathway and floor space for future build-outsand help reservemore premium cooling space.

• Manageability–Withoutmanageability, disconnects, reconnects and cable reroutingcan result in downtime, slower deployments, and lost revenue. Proper cablingmanagementstarts with Belden solutions that protect, storeand organize cables and connections whilefacilitating installation.

Uninterrupted access to data center applicationsis essential for any business tomaintain day-to-day operations, and ITmanagers everywhereare pushing to deliver “five 9s” availability. Our Expertise Makes Us the Easy Choice

Belden is also proud to hold leadership roleson the following data center related industrystandards committees and organizations whileproviding the quality products and supportnecessary to helpmake the IT professionals’job easier.

• TIA-942 – In April 2005, TIA(Telecommunications Industry Association)introduced the TIA-942 TelecommunicationsInfrastructure Standard for Data Centersto address cabling infrastructure in thedata center, including recognized cablingmedia type andmaximum cabling distances. The standard also provides facility, space, management, reliability and power andcooling guidelines, including strategies likearranging equipment racks in hot and coldaisles to encourage airflow and reduce heat.

A key aspect of TIA-942 is the definingof specific functional areas within the datacenter to help determine the placement ofcabling, components and equipment (basedon the standard star topology defined byexisting TIA standards for commercial spaces). The specific functional areas, their definitionsper the standard and the typical Beldenproducts found there are displayed onpages 6 and 7.

• 10GBASE-T Short-Reach Mode –The IEEE 802.3an standard for running10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper includesan optional Short-Reach or Low-Powermode. Short-ReachMode requires less powerbecause the complexity of the digital signalprocessing (DSP) and the level of the transmitsignal are reduced. Short Reach mode canbe implemented over a channel of up to30meters and requires Augmented Category 6or Class F cabling.

• BICSI-002 – BICSI, in conjunctionwith the National Electrical ContractorsAssociation (NECA), is developing acomplementary standard to TIA-942,anticipated to be released in early 2008.The proposed ANSI-BICSI-002 Data CenterStandard expands on the existing standardand its annexes to create a best practicesdocument that addresses data centerdesign and infrastructure in greater detail.

Keeping up-to-date with data center standards is key to a leadership position within the industry.
