1. Purpose of the database
This document gives an overview of the Database for Task 2 (DBT2) within the Glaciers_cci project. The database includes all datasets collected by the Glaciers_cci consortium that are required for product validation and the round robin exercises (RR). Analysis of the round robin results and their comparison to validation data will be performed internally. The RR participants will be provided with all Earth Observation (EO) and auxiliary datasets necessary for generating the respective dataset, the validation data will in general not be distributed. This approach will ensure that the analysis of the RR will be conducted under the same conditions and follow consistent guidelines for all products. Furthermore, this avoids copyright issues with data held by consortium members (e.g. high resolution national DEMs). For the glacier area product however, some validation datasets will be made available as well (high-resolution satellite images), as they are based on screenshots from Google Maps. Freely available datasets like ICESat GLAS and Envisat RA2 altimetry data, or the ASTER GDEM Version 2 (GDEMv2) and the SRTM Version 2 digital topographic data are not stored in the Glaciers_cci database. For quick access to these public data, links pointing to the distribution centres are provided respectively.
2. Access to the database
The database is available for the Glaciers_cci consortium as well as for authorised round robin participants under:
http://glacier_cci.enveo.at All data approved for the round Robin tests can be downloaded via this interface. The current size of the database is 41.1 GB. User authorisation is required for accessing the database in order to track the distribution of the data. For access to the database and participant registration, the scientific lead has to be contacted by email:

3. Structure of the database
The database follows a logical structure organized by the individual products and test sites. This ensures an easy modification or expansion of the database to changes that might occur in the course of the project. Fig. 1 illustrates the general structure schematically.

The following Table 4 and Table 5 together with the time line plots (Fig. 4) give an overview of the datasets available for validation and RR for the participants of the glacier elevation change product. As the datasets are freely available, they will not be stored in the DBT2. However, links to the dataset providers will be available. Test sites EC1 and EC2 are selected for the validation/RR of altimetry, sites EC3 and EC4 for DEM differencing.
