In January 2014, the NHTSA issued recalls for two vehicle models. One was for a pickup truck from a major auto manufacturer with around
370,000 units on the road. Another was for Tesla’s Model S sedan with around 29000 units on the road.
Tesla prepared the software update. Pushed it out to every single one of its Model S cars
remotely while the cars were turned off. When their owners turned them back on, a
notification on the dashboard alerted them of the update.
