1 About HP StorageWorks XP DataRetention Utility Operations

Data Retention Utility enables you to set access attributes for open-systems volumes. This chapterprovides an overview of setting access attributes.

Unless otherwise specified, the term storage system in this guide refers to the following disk arrays:

    HP StorageWorks XP24000 Disk Array

    HP StorageWorks XP20000 Disk Array

    HP StorageWorks XP12000 Disk Array

    HP StorageWorks XP10000 Disk Array

The GUI illustrations in this guide were created using a Windows computer with the Internet Explorer

browser. Actual windows may differ depending on the operating system and browser used. GUIcontents also vary with licensed program products, storage system models, and firmware versions.

Data Retention Utility ComponentsTo use Data Retention Utility, you need:

    the storage system

a computer that runs HP StorageWorks XP Remote Web Console (Remote Web Console computer)

a license key for the Data Retention Utility program product

    HP StorageWorks XP RAID Manager

To perform Data Retention Utility operations, you must use the Remote Web Console software, whichis a Java application to be downloaded to a Remote Web Console computer. To use Remote WebConsole, you must attach your Remote Web Console computer to the storage system via a LAN, andthen make appropriate browser settings. To use Remote Web Console, you must enable the DataRetention Utility program product using the license key on the Remote Web Console computer. Fordetailed information, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Remote Web Console UsersGuide.

You can use RAID Manager to make some Data Retention Utility settings. You can view some of theRAID Manager settings in the Data Retention Utility GUI. For details, see the HP StorageWorks XPRAID Manager Users Guide.

Data Retention Utility FunctionsThis section explains the functions of Data Retention Utility.

Access AttributesTo restrict read and write operations, you must assign an access attribute to each volume. DataRetention Utility enables you to assign one of the following access attributes to each volume:

    XP24000/XP20000 Data Retention Utility User's Guide 7

  • 8/3/2019 Data Retention Utility

    8/36

    Read/Write

If a volume has the Read/Write attribute, open-systems hosts can perform both read and writeoperations on the volume.

You can use storage system copy software to copy data to volumes that have the Read/Write at-tribute. However, if necessary, you can prevent copying data to volumes that have the Read/Writeattribute.

All open-systems volumes have the Read/Write attribute by default.

    Read Only

If a volume has the Read Onlyattribute, open-systems hosts can perform read operations, butcannot perform write operations on the volume.

You cannot use storage system copy software to copy data to volumes that have the Read Onlyattribute.

    Protect

If a volume has the Protect attribute, open-systems hosts cannot access the volume. Open-systemshosts cannot perform either read or write operations on the volume.

You cannot use storage system copy software to copy data to volumes that have the Protect attribute.

Data Retention Utility does not allow you to assign any access attribute to:

    mainframe volumes

volumes that are not mapped to physical devices

To assign access attributes to volumes, you use Remote Web Console to start Data Retention Utility, and then edit the access attributes in the Data Retention window.

For details on how to assign access attributes, see Changing the Access Attributes on page 19.

While the storage administrator can set access attributes to the volumes in any CUs (Control Units) inthe storage system, the storage partition administrator can set access attributes only to the volumesin CUs in the SLPR the storage partition administrator manages. Therefore, if you are a storage partitionadministrator and using the Data Retention window (see Figure 1 on page 15), only the CUs in yourSLPR are displayed in the window. The CUs in the SLPRs which are managed by other storage partitionadministrators are not displayed.

For detailed information on SLPR, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Disk/Cache PartitionUsers Guide.

Data Retention Term FunctionIf you change the access attribute of a volume to Read Onlyor Protect, you will usually be prohibitedfrom changing the access attribute to Read/Write for a certain period of time. The Data Retentionwindow displays the words Retention Term to indicate the period during which attempts to changethe access attribute to Read/Write are prohibited.

You will be prompted to specify a retention term when you change the access attribute of a volumeto Read Onlyor Protect.

After you specify the retention term, you can extend the term, but cannot shorten the term. For detailson how to extend the retention term, see Extending the Data Retention Term on page 20. If youneed to shorten the retention term, you must ask your HP service representative to do so.

Table 1 on page 9 is an example of access attributes in the window. This example shows the accessattributes of the volumes 00, 01, and 02.

Table 1 Access Attributes Displayed in the Window

    -02190 days-Disable58.59 GBOPEN-VRead Only01

    Inv00 days-Disable58.59 GBOPEN-VProtect02

In Table 1 on page 9, for example, you cannot change the access attribute of volume #01 toRead/Write in the next 2,190 days because the retention term for this volume is 2,190 days. If youneed to change the access attribute of this volume to Read/Write, you must ask your HP servicerepresentative to do so.

    Expiration Lock Function

You will be able to change the access attribute of a volume from Read Onlyto Read/Write or fromProtectto Read/Write when the retention term ends. Retention Term displays 0 days when the retentionterm is over. In Table 1 on page 9, for example, you can change the access attribute of volume #02to Read/Write because the retention term is over. However, if you enable expiration lockin the DataRetention window, attempts to change Read Onlyvolumes or Protectvolumes to Read/Write volumeswill fail even when the retention term is over. Expiration lock is disabled when you start Data RetentionUtility for the first time. To enable expiration lock, see Prohibiting Changes to Read/Write Even Whenthe Retention Term is Over (Enabling/Disabling the Expiration Lock Function) on page 22.

S-VOL Disable FunctionWhen storage system copy software copies data, the data on the copy destination volume (also known

as the secondary volume) will be overwritten. If a volume containing important data is specified as asecondary volume by mistake, storage system copy software can overwrite important data on thevolume and you could suffer loss of important data. Data Retention Utility enables you to avoid suchloss of data.

If you assign the S-VOL Disable attribute to a volume, storage system copy software will be unable tocopy data to that volume. Also, if you assign the Read Only attribute or Protect attribute to a volumeas an access attribute, any other write operations will be prohibited on that volume. For example, business application software will be unable to write data to such a volume.

To prohibit storage system copy software from copying data to a volume, but do not want to prohibitother write operations to the same volume, you must ensure that the volume has the Read/Writeattribute. Also, you must assign the S-VOL Disable attribute to that volume to prevent storage systemcopy software from copying data to the volume. For detailed information about how to do this, see

Protecting Logical Volumes Against Storage System Copy Operations (Setting the S-VOL DisableFunction) on page 22.

    Notes:

Storage system copy software refers to HP StorageWorks XP Continuous Access Software, HPStorageWorks XP Continuous Access Journal Software, HP StorageWorks XP Business CopySoftware, and HP StorageWorks XP Snapshot Software.

Secondary volumes (that is, copy destination volumes) are often referred to as S-VOLs in storagesystem documentation.

Reserve FunctionThe HP StorageWorks XP LUN Manager software enables Remote Web Console users to change LUpath configurations and command device configurations. However, if you use Data Retention Utilityto protect a volume, Remote Web Console users will be unable to change LU path settings andcommand device setting on the volume. For detailed information about how to prevent Remote Web

Console users from changing the settings, see Preventing Remote Web Console Users from ConfiguringLU Paths and Command Devices (Setting the Reserve Function) on page 25.

The Reserved column in the Data Retention window shows whether Remote Web Console users canchange LU path settings and command device settings on the volume.

If RAID Manager is installed on a host, you can change LU path settings and command device settingsfrom the host.

Interoperability with Other Products and FunctionsThis section provides information on using Data Retention Utility with other products.

HP StorageWorks XP LUN Expansion (LUSE)You cannot combine volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute when you create a LUSEvolume. You can, however, assign an access attribute other than Read/Write to the resulting LUSEvolume.

You cannot release a LUSE volume that does not have the Read/Write attribute.

HP StorageWorks XP Virtual LVI/LUNYou cannot convert volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute into spaces.

You cannot initialize customized volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute.

RAID ManagerWhen you view the Data Retention window, some other user might be using RAID Manager to changethe access attribute of a volume. If the RAID Manager user changes the access attribute of a volumewhen you view the Data Retention window, you will be unable to change the access attribute of thevolume by using Data Retention Utility. Then, if you attempt to change the access attribute of thevolume by using Data Retention Utility, an error occurs. If an error occurs, click File and then Refreshon the menu bar of the Remote Web Console main window, and then retry changing the accessattribute of the volume.

Auto Start ProductsSome program products are likely to start automatically at the time specified by the user. For example,if an HP StorageWorks XP Auto LUN Software user or an HP StorageWorks XP Performance Monitoruser specifies the time for starting the monitor, the monitor will automatically start at the specifiedtime.

If any program product that can start automatically is enabled, you must do one of the following:
