Data or Statistics?

• Poll Question: Data or Statistics?

#SAGETalks

Page 9: Data for the Non-Data Librarian

Data or Statistics?

• I’m determining the feasibility of developing a senior apartment/housing community in Easton, Md. I would really like to find information that breaks down household income by age for either Easton, MD or Talbot County, MD

• Poll Question: Data or Statistics?

Local Resources

• American Community Survey (ACS)• City/County/State government• City/County/State organizations• Local university/college research groups• Subscription/paid resources

Tip: It can be easier to find multiple organizations in larger cities. However, state organizations sometimes have data for smaller areas within the state.

The American Community Survey (ACS)

• De facto replacement of the Census Long-Form (discontinued after 2000 Census).

• Provides current demographic estimates for a sample of the population every year.

• Sample size is around 3.5 million households (per year) which is roughly 3% of total households.

Reference Question

• I would like to create a chart showing the following ethnic groups in relation to the total population of Michigan: Arab, Chinese, and Nepali.

• Poll Question: Who is a likely producer?• Poll Question: Which databases are likely to

have this information?

#SAGETalks

Page 36: Data for the Non-Data Librarian

Considerations

• Classifications: Ancestry vs. Race• Terminology: Nepali vs. Nepalese• Classifications: Chinese and Nepalese are

subdivisions of Asian. Arab is reported under Ancestry

• Classifications: Race alone or in combination
