Executive Summary Adoption of speech solutions integrated with organizations’ EHRs isn’t a new concept by any stretch but seems to get less attention than other departmental speech solutions. However, with the continued expansion of electronic health records, the monumental task remains—how to create and update patient information as quickly and accurately as possible. The problems associated with speech solutions in EHRs is the timing of when it’s used.

Chances are good that if you’ve recently been in a patient room, you‘ve seen a speech recognition microphone, branded with a prominent vendor’s logo. However, when was the last time you witnessed a physician actually use it while care is being administered? It would make for a bit of an awkward situation, unlike radiologists who camp out in reading rooms and never see the light of day, let alone a patient. For this and other reasons, the dynamics of using speech associated with regular health record updates is a different animal. The real value comes behind the scenes when physicians add or update their notes.
