Solving YourData CenterCabling Challenges

Page 2: Data Center Solutions

Belden knows your data center is much more than a space that simply houses servers and networkequipment. Fueled by e-commerce and the IP world we live in today, the data center has become themost critical asset and investment for nearly every organization. It is truly the operations center of yourbusiness, housing all the mission-critical applications, equipment and systems you need to enable everytransaction, communication and task, providing the links to customers, business partners and vendorsaround the world and even controlling building environmental, security and life safety systems.

2

Faced with the now fundamental importance of the data center and the need to provide forever-increasing applications, transmission speedsand data storage, businesses are experiencing asignificant upsurge in the amount of equipmenttheir data centers must support. Consequently, IT managers must design scalable data centers to support their future growth and potentiallynew technologies while ensuring maximumperformance, uptime, density and manageability. At the same time, the amount of power neededto run the data center is at an all time high, which requires sufficient cooling and energy efficient solutions.

As if those challenges weren’t enough, the neweconomics of IT has put budgets under increasedscrutiny, requiring IT managers to ensure ROI andlowest total cost of ownership when selecting data center components.

Within the data center, a variety of systemssupport, protect and manage both current andfuture equipment, the data transmitted and thethousands of connections between servers andswitches and the outlying areas of the network. These systems include storage, power distribution, cooling, cabling infrastructure, security and fireprotection – and any design decision for one islikely to impact the others. All of these systems are interrelated and influenced by the structuredcabling system. The structured cabling system is

the foundation of the data center, and should bedesigned with the scalability necessary to outlasttwo to three generations of active equipment, theflexibility to facilitate reconfigurations, and thedurability to ensure networking performance, reliability and availability. Without a properlydesigned cabling infrastructure, the data center is in jeopardy. In fact, independent research indicatesthat while the cabling infrastructure only represents2 to 5% of a typical IT budget, as much as 50% ofnetwork problems are related to an inadequate orunderperforming cabling infrastructure.

That’s why you need a partner with an in-depthknowledge of structured cabling, data centersystems and the interaction between them – amanufacturer who understands your data centerneeds and the challenges you’re up against. That partner is Belden.

We Understand Data Center Cabling Challenges

Regardless of the character of your business or your size, all data centers have similar needs, since their goal is the same–to provide secureand uninterrupted availability to computing, storage, networking and communicationsresources. Recent trends in the industry havefurther amplified the emphasis on performance, uptime, density, manageability and cost savings. No company has a better understanding of thesedata center cabling challenges than Belden.

• Performance–Bandwidth-intensive applications are no longer reserved forspecialty markets. Nearly every business todayis experiencing the need to support videostreaming and conferencing, the exchange ofmultimedia files, increased data storage, andhigh-speed Internet access. With most desktopspeeds now at Gigabit, it’s no wonder that 10 Gigabit is becoming the norm withincorporate backbones and data centers (whereIT managers strive to ensure capacity well intothe future). A quality cabling infrastructurecapable of delivering reliable, high-speedperformance is the key to ensuring bandwidth and scalability.

• Uptime–Downtime costs money.Uninterrupted access to data center applica-tions is essential for any business to maintainits day-to-day operations. With a focus on e-commerce, IT managers everywhere arepushing their data centers to deliver “five 9s”availability. A reliable cabling infrastructurewith zero-error transmission is essential formaintaining uptime. All the systems in thedata center must also work together toprotect cables, connections and equipment byensuring sufficient management, pathways, power, cooling, security and fire protection. For data center upgrades or expansions, ITmanagers need to bring new systems on linefaster with innovations like pre-terminatedplug and go solutions.

• Density–A significant increase in the numberof applications supported by the data centercalls for advanced technologies like servervirtualization and blade servers and the abilityto support more cables, connections and datastorage than ever before. Data center floorspace and rack space has become one of the topconcerns among IT managers today. Deployinghigh-density solutions throughout the datacenter offers scalability by yielding more rack, pathway and floor space for future data centerbuild-outs. High-density connectivity systemsalso help reserve premium cooling space forservers and other heat-generating equipment.

• Manageability–Let’s face it; the majority of moves, adds and changes take place withinthe data center with constant disconnects, reconnects and cable rerouting at the patchpanels and cross connects. Easy reconfigura-tion in the data center starts with a set ofstandardized practices and a proper cablingmanagement system that protects, stores andorganizes cables and connections at the rackand in pathways. Without them, IT managersend up wasting valuable time trying to makechanges, and more often than not, impropercable management leads to a cabling messthat makes identifying specific connections, patch cords and cables even more difficult.

• Cost Savings–Improving productivitythrough high-speed performance, ensuringconstant uptime and availability, saving spacewith high-density solutions, and implementingproper cabling management in the data centerall work together to lower the total cost of ownership. Still, dealing with budgetconstraints and proving ROI can be one of the most difficult challenges. That’s why ITmanager need to partner with a reputablesolutions provider that offers a breadth of components that solve data center challenges without compromise.

Data Center Standards & Guidelines

Belden is proud to hold leadership roles on these data center related industry standardscommittees and organizations while providing the quality products and support necessary to help make the IT professionals’ job easier.

• TIA-942 – In April 2005, TIA (TelecommunicationsIndustry Association) introduced the TIA-942Telecommunications Infrastructure Standard for Data Centers to address cabling infrastructure in thedata center, including recognized cabling media typeand maximum cabling distances. The standard alsoprovides facility, space, management, reliability andpower and cooling guidelines, including strategies likearranging equipment racks in hot and cold aisles toencourage airflow and reduce heat.

A key aspect of TIA-942 is the defining of specific functional areas within the data center to help determinethe placement of cabling, components and equipment(based on the standard star topology defined by existingTIA standards for commercial spaces). The specificfunctional areas, their definitions per the standard andthe typical Belden products found there are displayed on pages 6 and 7.

• Short-Reach Mode – To address increased power consumption, the IEEE802.3an standard forrunning 10 Gigabit Ethernet over copper includes anoptional Short Reach or Low Power Mode. Short ReachMode requires less power by reducing the length of horizontal cabling links in the data center from 100 meters to 30 meters where shorter distances arecommonplace. Short Reach Mode requires 10 GigabitAugmented Category 6 cabling.

• BICSI-002 – BICSI, in conjunction with the NationalElectrical Contractors Association (NECA), is developing a complementary standard to TIA-942, anticipated to be released in early 2008. The proposed ANSI-BICSI-002 Data Center Standard expands on the existing standard and its annexes to create a bestpractices document that addresses data center designand infrastructure in greater detail.
