IEEE 802.3 - Communication Standards

1 802.3bd 2010 Priority-based Flow Control. An amendment by the IEEE

802.1 Data Center Bridging Task Group (802.1Qbb) to develop an

amendment to IEEE Std 802.3 to add a MAC Control Frame to support IEEE

802.1Qbb Priority-based Flow Control.

Ethernet flow control

1 The follow-on 'priority-based flow control', as defined in the 'IEEE

802.1Qbb' standard, provides a link-level flow control mechanism that

can be controlled independently for each Class of Service (CoS), as

defined by IEEE P802.1p. The goal of this mechanism is to ensure zero loss

under congestion in data center bridging (DCB) networks.

Fibre Channel over Ethernet.

Data center bridging

1 'Data center bridging' (DCB) refers to a set of enhancements to Ethernet local area networks for use in data

center environments

Page 6: Data Center Bridging

Data center bridging

1 To meet these goals new standards are being (or have been) developed that either extend

the existing set of Ethernet protocols or emulate the connectivity offered by Ethernet

protocols. They are being (or have been) developed respectively by two separate

standards bodies, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Data Center

Bridging Task Group of the IEEE 802.1 Working Group and the Internet Engineering

Task Force (IETF).

Data center bridging - Terminology

1 Different terms have been used to market products based on data center bridging

standards:

Data center bridging - Terminology

1 * 'Data Center Ethernet' (DCE) was a term trademarked by Brocade

Communications Systems in 2007 but abandoned by request in 2008. DCE

referred to Ethernet enhancements for the Data Center Bridging standards, and

also including a Layer 2 Multipathing implementation based on the IETF's TRILL (computing)|Transparent Interconnection

of Lots of Links (TRILL) standard.

1 * Data Center Bridging Capabilities Exchange Protocol (DCBX): a discovery and capability

exchange protocol that is used for conveying capabilities and configuration of the above

features between neighbors to ensure consistent configuration across the network.

This protocol leverages functionality provided by [

http://www.ieee802.org/1/pages/802.1ab.html IEEE 802.1AB] (LLDP). It is actually included

in the 802.1az standard.

Brocade Communications - Products

1 Other hardware solutions from Brocade support common protocols including iSCSI, FCIP, GigE, FICON, Fibre Channel over Ethernet|FCoE, Data center bridging|DCB/CEE, and

Layer 4-7 networking protocols.

Brocade Communications - Fibre Channel

1 In Late 2010 Brocade introduced Virtual Cluster Switching (VCS) on

the VDX ultra-low-latency data center switch product line. These are Data center bridging|DCB/CEE- and TRILL (Computer Networking)|TRILL-based switches, eliminating the need

for Spanning Tree Protocol, and supporting multi-hop Fibre Channel

over Ethernet (FCoE) and self-trunking.

Ethernet Alliance - Organization

1 * Ethernet in the Data Center focus includes protocols such as Data

Center Bridging (DCB), Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), iSCSI, Remote

direct memory access over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) and

iWARP.

Link Layer Discovery Protocol - Applications

1 The Link Layer Discovery Protocol may be used as a component in

network management and monitoring applications. One such example is its use in data center

bridging requirements.

FCoE - Functionality

1 Since classical Ethernet had no priority-based Ethernet flow control|flow control, unlike Fibre Channel,

FCoE required enhancements to the Ethernet standard to support a

priority-based flow control mechanism (to reduce frame loss

from congestion). The IEEE standards body added priorities in

the data center bridging Task Group.https://store.theartofservice.com/the-data-center-bridging-toolkit.html

1 It is a small (1U) switch with a high port-density and can be used as distribution or

(collapsed)core switch for campus networks and for use in the datacenter it offers features such as loss-less ethernet for iSCSI and FCoE,

Dell Networking - Dell Networking S series

1 The S-5000 is targeted for datacenter networking as either a 10G access-switch or a datacenter distribution

switches. It can also be used as (routing) core switch in smaller

datacenters. It fully supports Data Center Bridging (DCB) and can also be used as FCoE or Fibre Channel

switch by using a FC interface module.
