Located in Heping Township, Taichung County at elevations of between 1,800 and 2,996 meters, Dasyieshan National Forest Recreation Area was established over 3,063 hectares. Forest type changes with elevation from warm temperate, temperate, to frigid (coniferous).

In Dasyieshan National Forest Recreation Area, the various vegetations provide habitats for many animals. It is also a famous bird watching place. Dasyieshan National Forest Recreation Area was also recommended as one of the “Ten of Bird Watching Site in Taiwan”.

Dasyieshan national forest recreation covers warm temperate, temperate, to frigid climates. So the fauna is also diverse.

Formosan Laughing Thrush

The attractive trail – sky lake trail is one of the best bird watching places. Formosan laughing thrush, Vinacceus rose finch and yellow-bellied bush warbler are the common species.

Near the Anmashan Hostel, you can hear the voice from white-browed shortwing, white-faced flying squirrel and Formosan barking deer that present a beautiful nature melody.

Formosan stripped squirrel

Formosan stripped squirrel and Owslon's long-nosed tree squirrel always appear indistinctly through the forest.

Dasyieshan are mainly composed by conifer and broadleaf forest. This area is so called “Cloud Forest” in Taiwan. The weather is humid and foggy.

Formosan red cypress, and Taiwan Hemlock and spruce are the dominant species. They usually grow very huge which have almost 30 meter in height.
