The workshop was attended by Prof. A S Arya, Prof. Harsha Sinvhal, Dr. P S Rana, Sh. Malay Chatterjee,

Sh. Hari Kumar, Rajeev Issar, Prof. Protima Rani Bose, Sandeep Donald Shah and experts and

    Development, GOI.

Who can forget the tragedy of earthquake witnessed by

Jammu & Kashmir and Gujarat in the recent past? India

has witnessed its massive toll in the form of human

beings as well as buildings being razed to ground.

Actually, it is not the earthquake, which kills people but

the unsafe constructions make people suffer. Earthquakeis the biggest and most painful tragedy that continues to

wreck havoc across the world. Keeping this in mind

Omaxe Foundation, the humanitarian face of well-known

real estate giant OMAXE has taken the initiative andbrought together all stakeholders i.e. government,

architects, engineers, etc to discuss techniques to

construct safer buildings and to clear myths about the

    cost of safe structures.

    Key Facts

Large parts of India comes under high and

moderate seismic risk (seismic zones IV and V)

Earthquakes disasters have caused huge losses

to life, property and economy in the last coupleof years

Construction industry is a major employer inboth the organised and unorganized sector.

There is a growing need of all the stakeholders

to be aware of the advancements in technology

and long term benefits of adopting disaster

mitigation measures to ensure that all the

    constructions earthquake resistant.

The investments made in the area of disaster

mitigation and preparedness yield rich dividends

in the long run and help the socio- economic

development of the nation and ensure a safer

    habitat for all citizens.

Liberalization and Globalization has lead to rapid

increase in investment in infrastructural and

    construction activities resulting in new

    opportunities and challenges.

In its effort to make safer habitats, Omaxe

foundation took an initiative and organized

workshops to train the groups personnel.

The first workshop was held for Civil

    Engineers, Project Managers, and

Architects conducted by UNDP (India)Resource Persons. Over150 experts from a

cross section of Professional Bodies and

Institutions attended the workshop todiscuss the factors, which should be taken

care of while building any structure.Speaking on the occasion the Chairman of

Omaxe Foundation Rohtas Goel said, In

an era of vertical growth of building the

risk factor has increased and it is the duty

of the construction companies to ensure

the safety of the occupants by building

    Earthquake Resistant buildings. He further

emphasized on the role of corporate in

ensuring the safer living for the people. An

eminent specialist Mr P K Das conducted

the second training programme for the

    Maisons and other supplementary staff.

    The participants at the workshop

    also include representatives from,

Earthquake related statistics in the Indian context:

    Delhi College of Engineering,

    HUDCO, Galgotia College of

    Engineering and Technology

    construction industry, architects,

    planners, practicing structural and

    earthquake engineers, NGOs, social

    workers and Media.

59% of the country is prone to earthquake.

Over 1 million houses are destroyed in a year.

Shallower the earthquake, more the damage.

Unplanned construction is prone to major loss of life

    and property.

Facts About Earthquake Protection of Buildings

Earthquake Resistant is the Minimum permissible

    earthquake protection.

When someone advertises that a building has been

    constructed to Earthquake Resistant specification

it means that it has been constructed to Minimum

    Permissible Safety Standards.

Earthquake Resistant buildings whether Zone III,

IV or V are all based on Life Safety Concept.

Earthquake Resistant buildings are so designed soas to prevent a Total Building Collapse thereby

    saving lives.

Incase the damage is more than a threshold level

the owner/user will have no option but to demolish

    and re-construct the building.

There exist many technologies when used make

the building nearly Earthquake Proof. Building will

not suffer structural damage even in case of majorearthquake.

These Earthquake Proof Devices are called Seismic

Dampers and they absorb the Earthquake Energy

    just like a Shock Absorber.

Dampers increase the building cost by

    approximately Rupees (Indian) 150-200 per

    square foot.

Dampers come with a performance Guarantee of

35 years and even existing buildings can be

upgraded by installing Dampers. Taylor Devices

Inc are the world leaders in Seismic Dampers.

    Omaxe Foundation has received a

proposal from UNDP India regarding the

opening of resource centre and alsotraining its personnel in earthquake

    resistant design and structures. Apoorva

Joshi, Vice Chairman of the foundationspeaking on the objectives said, "This is

one of our activities where the

endeavour is to reach out beyond the

boundaries of corporate growth and the

    reflection of our commitment towards

the society as well as underprivileged.

The foundation is planning to provide

    scholarships especially to the

underprivileged students in the area of

    Earthquake Resistant structures and

encourage them in making their dreams

come true. The experts are of the

opinion that the Government and theregulatory agencies should enact

suitable legislation to make it mandatory

    to follow earthquake codes.

Omaxe Foundation is geared up to take

on the challenges; and the Foundation is

functioning as a vanguard of change, which through community participation is

    setting new standards of Corporate

Social Responsibility and build humanand fund capital to usher in the 21st

    century.
