September 19, 2018 Dear Families, In our efforts to focus on student safety, we turned our attention to online safety this past Monday. We had an eye-opening presentation from the DA’s office for our students in Grades 6-8. They discussed Internet Safety and Cyber-Bullying. It was quite astonishing to see how many students claimed to have upwards of 200, 300, or 400+ “friends” online, and that some admitted to sharing at least some piece of personal info. with “friends” who were actually unknown to them. In addition, staff members were floored by the number of students who admitted to keeping their phones in their bedrooms at night, and to using them well after their parents presumed they were asleep. These students seem to be suffering from FOMO- the Fear of Missing Out- which can affect all of us at some point. However, if your child is awake at midnight on his/her device, afraid to miss out on that text message, SnapChat or Instagram post, as some admitted - your child is definitely missing out – on sleep! Students are fortunate to have technology available in the school, as it makes access to resources and sources immediately available as they complete work. They also are able to utilize Google Classroom for work. I reminded our Middle School students today that we have a small school with teachers who know them well- and who know their “voice” in writing. In other words, teachers can tell when work is not the student’s own. I reminded students not to “cut and paste” from the internet to complete work. If they found it online- so can we! I also reminded them not to allow others to copy their work, as teachers will realize immediately that they have read the same piece before. Students must log out of their Google accounts after use so they cannot be accessed, and keep their Google passwords private (except with you). We’ve had students share, thereby allowing their work to be copied.

Dear Families,

In our efforts to focus on student safety, we turned our attention to online safety this past Monday.

One more tech note- a very positive one! I thank Amy Abercrombie, who has worked with the diocese over the last year as a new website has been in-design for each of the schools. Our rollout was today- Mrs. Abercrombie is attending to some final details, but check it out at spxschool.org!

Below is a message from Fr. Paul to the parishioners of St. Pius X Parish. Many of you might have seen it already in the bulletin, but if not…

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: Welcome -If you are alienated or upset, we welcome you lovingly. -If you are in need of forgiveness, Jesus forgives you completely–with unconditional love. -If you have been hurt by the Church, we are truly sorry. -If you are angry, Jesus offers you peace. -If life has become burdensome, we are here to support you. -We are happy you are here and want you to stay. -We would like to share our lives with you. -Come join us each week so we can worship together.

Listening session: I am pleased to announce that on Tuesday, September 25th at 6:30 PM in the Church, we will have a listening session on the current crisis in the Church. Our facilitator will be Jack Hagenbuch from OLC parish in Brewster. He has a Masters in Social Work from Boston College and has over 30 years’ experience in child protective services. It is about seeking the truth that sets us free. He will use Romans 8:35 as a jumping off point: “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or the sword?” We look forward to his coming to us.

Please note that the handicapped parking space in front of the Gym is being painted, and is for handicapped use. Also, the space next to it must be kept clear, as the wheelchair ramp is there. God bless each of you and your families,

Why I signed up to be the new Lunch Duty Co-Ordinator?

I started doing LD(lunch duty) to surprise my daughter in Kindergarden. I didnt tell her I was coming and then when she went to lunch and see me, I would see a huge smile on her face. What I didn't foresee is how much I looked forward to those LD days too. I got to know the Teachers/Room moms and the other school

children. I got to see that the older kids helping out with the younger kids & how well mannered the kids were. I got to be a deeper part of the school community and realized how great our school was. I started

relationships with other parents which led to play dates for the kids and found other like minded parents who believe in a great education will lead to “Golden Rule” kids.

I hope you will join me in helping out our school community and making a deeper connection with our children and our school staff and other parents. Help us create a strong school community.
