Big green at a glance TheDartmouthwomen’screwteamismakingitsfifthNCAAappearanceand just thirdteamappearance inprogramhistory.TheBigGreenisoneoffivesquadsfromthepowerfulEasternAs-sociationofWomen’sRowingColleges(EAWRC)toappearatthisyear’s Championships. Yale, Brown, Princeton and Racliffe (Har-vard)willalljoinDartmouthattheChampionships. Last time it raced, Dartmouth’s Varsity Eight took fifth in acloseGrandFinalattheEasternSprints,behindtheEAWRC’sotherqualifiers.BoththeSecondVarsityEightandVarsityFourtookfifthintheirrespectiveGrandFinals,pushingtheteamintotheNCAAChampionships. Thismarksthefirsttimesince1998(alsoqualifyingin1997)thatDartmouthhassentitsentireteamtotheNCAAChampion-ship,finishingeighthinthepriorshowings.Undertheoldformatthatawardedat-largebids toVarsityEightboats, theBigGreensentaboatin1999andbrokeaseven-yeardroughtwithaVarsityEightbidin2007. While the 1999 squad took 11th of 16, the 2007 Big Greencrewwasjust.42secondsawayfromwinningthePetiteFinal,stillfinishinganimpressiveeighthoverallof16. Since1997,eightoftheNCAAWomen’sRowingTeamCham-pionships have been won by EAWRC crews, with Brown takinghomeseven,including2008,2007andashareofthetitlein2006.AnEAWRCschoolhasfinishedsecond infiveof thecontestsaswell,includingtwoofthelastfour.
In just her fourth season as thehead coach of Dartmouth women’screw,WendyLevashhasalreadyledtheBigGreentotwoNCAAChampi-onshipappearances,withtheVarsityEight making the field in 2007 andthe entire team qualifying this year
forthefirsttimesince1998. Sincearrivingin2005,LevashhasguidedtheDartmouthVarsitytotwoGrandFinalsatEasternSprints, includingafifth-placefinishthisspring.The2007squadtookfifthatsprintsandearnedoneoffourat-largebidsawardedtostandoutVarsityEightboats.Thatboatsurpassedexpectationsbytakingsecondbyjust0.42secondsinthePetiteFinalforaneighthplaceoverallfinishoutof16boats. At Dartmouth, Levash has mentored several standout rowersincluding Anne Kennedy ’07 and Kate Davison ’07 who won goldmedals withTeam USA at the U-23World Championships in 2006.CurrentrowersKathrynTwyman’09andEmilyDreissigacker’11havebeeninvitedtoU-23NationalTeamtrainingcampsthissummerforCanadaandtheUnitedStates,respectively. TheEasternAssociationofWomen’sRowingColleges(EAWRC)NoviceCoachoftheYearin2002,LevashledherPrincetonUniversityfreshmancrewstoundefeatedseasonsandgoldmedalsattheEast-ernSprints in2002and2004.Her2003freshmencapturedasilvermedalattheSprints.
PriortoherstintwiththeTigers,Levashspentthreeyearsmold-ingtheCornellfirstnoviceeightintoachampionshipcrew.DuringherfinalseasoninIthacain2001,shewasnamedtheEAWRCNoviceCoach of theYear after leading her crew to an undefeated seasonandagoldmedalattheEasternSprints. Astandoutrowerinherownright,Levashcaptainedthe1998Princetoncrew.ShewonagoldmedalattheEasternSprintsin1995asamemberof thefirstnoviceeightandstruckgoldagainat theSprints in 1997 as a member of the first varsity eight. Levash alsocompetedinthefirsttwoNCAAchampionshipregattasin1997and1998. A1998magnacumlaudegraduateofPrincetonwithaB.A. inecologyandevolutionarybiology,LevashwontheLeslieK.JohnsonMemorialAwardforoutstandingseniorthesisworkin1998. She lives in Vermont with her husband, Topher Bordeau, theDartmouthmen’sheavyweightcrewheadcoach.
Now in his third season, GherstjoinedtheDartmouthstaffin2006afterspendingsixyearsastheheadmen’s coach at the University ofRhode Island. In 2004 Gherst ledRhode Islandtothebestseason inits45yearhistory,medalingatthe
New England Championships, ECAC Invitational, and taking theprogram’sfirstevertriptotheHenleyRoyalRegatta. A1997graduateoftheUniversityofVermontwithadegreeinpoliticalscience,Gherstbeganhiscoachingcareerathisalmama-terasthenovicewomen’scoachfrom1997-1998beforebecomingtheheadcoachfrom1998-2000. AformercoxswainatbothUVMandthePennsylvaniaAthleticClub,Gherstwonnumerousmedalsonthecollegiateandnationallevel and competed at the 1996 World Championships in Strath-clyde,Scotland. Formerlythevarsityassistant,Gherstisinhisfirstyearascoachofthefreshmenteam.Inadditiontohisresponsibilitiesasfreshmencoach, Gherst’s background in coxing allows him to work closelywiththeBigGreencoxswainsindevelopingallaspectsoftheirrolebothonandoffthewater.

KateDavison’07returnedtotheBig Green as the second assistantin2009.Herdutiesincludeassistingwithvarsityandnovicecrews,aswellasrecruiting. Davison returns to Hanover af-ter a four-year career with the Big
Greenwomen’screwteamfrom2003-07.WhileamemberoftheBigGreen,sheplacedeighth invarsityeightsattheNCAAChampion-ships and fifth at Eastern Sprints in her final season. Davison was a member of the U.S. Under-23 National Team in 2006 and won the gold medalinthewomen’seightattheWorldChampionshipsinBelgium.She graduated with a degree in psychology in 2007. Since her graduation, Davison has been a full-time kindergarten andpreschoolteacherattheBedfordYouthPerformingCompanyinBedford, N.H. She also taught dance classes at Bedford High School andinafterschoolprogramsatlocalelementaryandmiddleschools. LastspringshewasavolunteerassistantcoachfortheConcordHigh School women’s crew team and also biked from Concord, N.H., to Vancouver, B.C., as part of the Bike and Build program, which raises awarenessoftheneedforaffordablehousing.
