Dartington Open Space, Sport and Recreation Plan 2017 1 Dartington Open Space, Sport and Recreation Plan 2017 Executive Summary Dartington is a beautiful and much-loved parish neighbouring Totnes, nestled between the moors and the sea in the South Hams. It comprises the village of Dartington, the Dartington Hall Estate, a number of hamlets and is home to around 1800 people. Recent planning decisions will result in a significant increase in housing, population and traffic not only in Dartington but also Totnes. This will have major consequence for local facilities, many of which are already in serious need of improvement and renewal. Over the last two years people from across the parish have been involved in extensive consultation examining current facilities, understanding local need and agreeing priorities for open spaces, sport and recreation. This has been a highly inclusive process drawing in those who live, work, visit and study in the parish as well as those with a statutory responsibility for providing services. People are now ready for something to happen: there is a clear consensus and passion to get started. Dartington aspires to be a place where there are opportunities for play, sport and recreation for all regardless of age, means or ability that make the most of the wonderful natural environment and, where necessary, re-imagine or re-develop existing facilities. Important to these aspirations are landowners across the parish and in particular, the Dartington Hall Trust, which leases land and property to local organisations, businesses and individuals. The priorities for open spaces, sport and recreation for the parish are: 1. To preserve, protect and nurture the many paths, open spaces and woodland across the parish. 2. To recognise the Meadowbrook area as a future hub for play, sport and recreation in the village. 3. To support and enable the existing clubs for sport and recreation to grow and flourish. Recommendations for the short and medium term are: 1. To develop adventurous, inclusive and imaginative play facilities for all at Meadowbrook. 2. To develop the Meadowbrook Community Centre and surrounding area to become a hub for sport and recreation. 3. To improve facilities at the Foxhole cricket club.
