The pathof history

The homes at Langley Square are part of Dartford’s significant industrial history. Occupying

the Mill Pond site, the land has seen a variety of uses over the years.

Built in 1852, the site was originally the home of the Phoenix Paper Mill. The factory was responsible for creating iron, corn, oilseed and paper with the power for the site generated by the large pond at its centre.

Over 30 years later the Mill was purchased by Henry Wellcome and Silas Burroughs, two London-based American pharmacists looking for a site to produce medicinal products. The factory benefited from a unique location as materials could be transported easily up the creek leading to its very own wharf.

The company went from strength to strength in the 19th Century and pioneered the use of tablet delivery of medication. This new compressed form of drugs had not been seen in England before and the word ‘tabloid’, an amalgamation of tablet and alkaloid, was registered as a trademark. This phrase later developed to be used for anything compressed and is where the term tabloid newspapers comes from. As well as medicine the company also produced medicine chests which were given to explorers and royalty in the early 20th Century. The company later merged with Glaxo in 1995 and after several further mergers, the company is now known as GlaxoSmithKline.

Holy Trinity Church, Dartford

From the very beginning, Burroughs Wellcome & Co were extremely invested in the wellbeing of their employees, encouraging staff to adopt leisure activities outside of work. The Wellcome Club and Institute was founded in 1898 within Acacia Hall, and boasted a library, gymnasium, events hall, tennis courts and a lake for staff to use. Now a

popular wedding and conference venue, the Grade II listed building is a jewel in the historic town of Dartford. Dartford has a rich heritage and royal connections, it was the location Henry VIII chose to build a manor house in the 16th Century for his own personal use. The building has significant political importance to Tudor England due to the Privy Council meeting here and was even the home to Anne of Cleves before her death in 1557.

There are no less than eleven churches in Dartford with the most well-known and interesting being Holy Trinity. The church dates back to the 9th Century and has links with Thomas Becket.

The Dartford Borough Museum has plenty of free resources available to the public and has many artefacts relating to the history of Dartford as well as containing works of fiction and entertainment.


The great outdoors

Dartford is host to an array of parks and open spaces, with both Central Park and Hesketh Park offering beautiful manicured gardens, green expanses and sporting facilities right in the town centre such as a skatepark, outdoor fitness equipment and bike track.

Slightly further afield there are a variety of wooded areas and country parks to chose from; Darenth Country Park, Beacon Wood and Dartford Heath are home to a wide variety of wildlife and can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Fairfield leisure centre has just undergone a major refurbishment and now offers excellent quality facilities including a multi-use sports hall, pool, sauna and a 110 station gymnasium with spinning studio. Acacia Hall was once the home of the Wellcome Club and Institute and is still a fitness centre today; boasting a gymnasium, fitness classes as well as indoor and outdoor sports facilities amongst its secluded grounds.

Dartford has the first purpose-built state of the art Judo centre in the UK. The Dartford Judo Club played a key role in the lead up to both the Beijing and London Olympics and is one of the best Judo centres outside of Japan.

Bringing ideas to life

The Company was formed in 1987 by Bob Weston who took his considerable experience in the building industry to set up what has now become Weston

Homes Plc, which has grown to become one of the major house builders of the South East. Recently this has manifested itself through the company’s revolutionary new ‘Project Genesis’ scheme. Through Project Genesis, Weston Homes has taken house building to a new level. Many of the properties’ components are pre-manufactured in factory conditions rather than on-site, allowing quality to be maintained. Strict quality controls are carried out at all stages with items including door sets, windows and kitchens, quickly and efficiently fitted on-site at an advanced stage of construction. Home buyer's information pack

All purchasers at Langley Square will be presented with the information manual from Weston Homes at the point of reservation. The reservation manual includes all of the information needed to ensure the purchasing process is as smooth as possible; the manual takes the

purchaser through all the stages they will encounter from reservation through to exchange and will even give advice on how to prepare for completion and occupancy.

When collecting keys for a Langley Square property, the purchaser will receive a further handover manual, presented in a leather bound folio; containing all manuals for every appliance in the new property as well as important information and contact details.

The home-owner’s folio presented also allows the purchaser space to add any other documents which they may collect throughout the purchasing process. The manuals are provided to make buying and moving in at Langley Square as stress-free as possible.
