Daroff Design Inc + DDI Architects, PC (DDI), is an award winning, internationally recognized interiors, architecture and graphic design firm. We specialize in the planning and design of exciting, efficient, cost effective and environmentally sustainable resort, hotel, and restaurant projects. Working in diverse design vocabularies, our creative team is widely recognized for creating visually memorable, contemporary, traditional and regionally inspired properties for both independently owned boutique hotels and major national brands. Now celebrating our 39th year in business as a woman business enterprise (WBE), we provide our clients with a wealth of highly creative and technically skilled design and project management services.

We believe in creating design solutions that thoughtfully respond to brand standards, contextual environments and the operational objectives of each client. Our project management philosophy is grounded in client advocacy and our success is achieved through effective communication, teamwork, innovative thinking and a commitment to design excellence.

We understand that project schedules can vary from the traditional linear path. One of our strongest assets is the ability to mobilize our in-depth resources as required to successfully complete time-sensitive, fast-track projects. Collaborating with specialty engineering, lighting, audio visual, food service and other consultant team members, we provide a fully coordinated set of contract documents and construction administration services. All project documentation including project schedules, budgets, construction drawings and furniture specifications are reviewed by our technical staff for quality assurance.

Karen Daroff, IIDApresident + design principal

Karen Daroff founded Daroff Design Inc in 1973 and has led her firm to national and international prominence. Regarded for her expertise in designing highly creative and cost-effective hospitality environments, Ms. Daroff has received numerous awards for design excellence, including the prestigious Interiors Magazine Designer of the Year award and Platinum Circle Hall of Fame. Ms. Daroff is a graduate of Moore College of Art, and in 2011 she received the Distinguished Alumnae Award. Active in civic affairs, Ms. Daroff has served as a trustee at Moore and at the University of the Arts.


James Rappoport, AIA, NCARBprincipal + strategic planning

James Rappoport, Architect-of-Record for DDI Architects PC, enjoys a national reputation for his expertise in comparative site selection, facility real estate evaluation, lease and work-letter review, faci l i ty programming, “inside-out” planning and budgeting. These feasibility phase services provide the basis for creating highly functional and cost-effective projects. Mr. Rappoport, a well respected architect / urban planner, is a graduate of Cornell and Columbia University, where he earned a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design.

Robert Hilton, AIAprincipal + sr. project manager

Robert Hilton achieved his degree in architecture from the University of Virginia. He brings more than 30 years of professional experience and hands-on project architect/project management expertise to DDI’s hospitality projects including renovation, adaptive reuse and the inside-out planning and design for the fit-out of new ground up hospitality projects. Mr. Hilton’s strengths include a passion for client advocacy, attention to detail and an ability to deliver complex fast track projects on schedule and within budget.


DB Kimprincipal hospitality designer

DB Kim has more than fifteen years of experience with a wide range of hospitality projects from both the designer and the operator’s side. As Vice President of Design for Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, DB developed and implemented new brand strategies for major hotel groups, which are now recognized worldwide for meeting the evolving needs of modern business and leisure travelers with simple and intelligent design solutions that emphasize comfort, convenience and quality. Mr. Kim’s brings exacting design expectations and years of industry experience to his projects.

Stephen Beacham, AIA, IIDAassociate principal + sr. designer

Stephen Beacham excels both as an innovative designer and as a well-rounded architect who ful ly understands his managerial and technical responsibilities. Mr. Beacham is commited to providing each o f DDI ’s c l ien ts w i th des ign recommendations that create efficient and operationally effective hospitality environments while reinforcing each client’s brand. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, Mr. Beacham frequently returns to Pratt as a visit ing lecturer and is passionate about mentoring the next generation of architects and designers.


Rick Marencic, IIDA, NCIDQprincipal + sr. designer

Rick Marencic is an NCIDQ certified Interior Designer and University of Michigan graduate, with more than 25 years of experience. Mr. Marencic is widely recognized for his innovative and functional design solutions for prominent national hospitality, retail and restaurant clients. Mr. Marencic is a client advocate, dedicated to meeting project budget, operational and brand design requirements in collaboration with specialty team consultants. He has a proven track record of meeting and exceeding his client’s goals and objectives.

Alina Jakubskiprincipal + sr. project manager

Alina Jakubski is a graduate of Drexel University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design. During Ms. Jakubski’s more than 30 years with Daroff Design, she has provided comprehensive facilities programming, space analysis and planning, benchmarking, project management and FF&E management for many of the firm’s most challenging hosp i t a l i t y and co rpo ra te p ro j ec t assignments. Ms. Jakubski’s meticulous attention to detail, project management skills and client advocacy has resulted in a long following of repeat clients.


Kent Lessly, AIAprincipal + architectural project manager

Kent Lessly has 32 years of proven experience leading the project management process for the design, documentation and implementation of highly complex, technically sophisticated large scale hospitality and restaurant projects. Mr. Lessly’s leadership skills facilitate efficient communication among all professional team members and clients on major multi-disciplinary renovation and new construction projects with challenging fast-track schedules. His meticulously detailed contract documents are appreciated by clients and contractors for ease of budgeting and construction.

Mark Zwagerman, AIA, LEED AP associate principal

Mark Zwagerman has over 25 years of exper ience del iver ing hospital i ty, entertainment, gaming and corporate architecture and interior design projects. From boutique restaurants to billion dollar resorts, Mark’s work has also spanned the globe from the Venetian Casino Resort in Las Vegas NV to the “Riviera” mixed use hotel, casino and retail environment located in Moscow, Russia. Integrating hospitality architecture and interior design has been a life long ambition; Mark is a licensed architect and received his formal training in fine art and interior design at Colorado State University.

Tim Fells, AIA, LEEDquality assurance + technical reviews

Tim Fe l ls is a reg is te red arch i tect who oversees the documentation of our corporate, hospital i ty and public sector projects. With over 25 years of experience in architectural design, Mr. Fells, earned his Masters of Architecture from the Polytechnic of North London. His responsibilities include overseeing the quality assurance and peer review of DDI’s documentation processes, building code coordination, developing and evaluating DDI’s office standard construction details, and monitoring the review of our sample and drawing process.
