Message from the Principal

Dear parents, carers and children

This week I had the pleasure of meeting and greeting families for our new reception intake for 2018-19. It was

wonderful to see familiar family faces in the hall and classrooms, alongside new comers. We are excited to

welcome their young children to the world of school and are keen to work in partnership with them.

We also held our first ‘moving to year one’ meeting for parents. Our EYFS and KS1 leaders worked together to

share how we bridge between Reception and Year One to help our children to transition happily and

successfully. The team shared similarities and differences between the key stages and helpful advice for

parents and children.

Take a look at our website which has information for families new to Darlinghurst, including induction and the

admissions process. www.darlinghurst.uk/new-to-darlinghurst

I firmly believe in our mission statement,

Achieving excellence together and working in partnership with families is integral to our community. This week

we were accredited the LPPA (Leading Parent Partnership Award) award in recognition of the many ways that

we engage, invest, involve, and communicate within our community.

Our children are at the centre of all we do and why we are here.

We have a number of shared and celebratory events coming up as we move into the final few weeks of this

academic year. Please refer to the school calendar and take a look at emails and texts. I am looking forward

to the forthcoming sports days and our PTA Afternoon Bouncy Castle event and much more.

As the end of the year approaches could I remind you to take a look at your ‘parent pay’ account and ensure

that payments are up to date. Our finance team is happy to communicate with you if you have any concerns

or questions.

Finally, with the temperatures reaching heights for the summer months could you ensure that the children are

protected by wearing sun-cream and a hat, bringing along a water bottle to keep hydrated in the heat. Ask

your children to share or sing to you; slip, slop, slap, seek and slide! Visit our website for more details

As always enjoy your family time together.

Stay safe in the sun.

EYFS

This week in Nursery we have been looking at travelling by bus or bike. Where would you/have you been on a

bus? What might you see on a bus? Our roleplay area has been a bus this week with a steering wheel and

chairs and a bus stop and there have been dressing up clothes for the children to wear. We also learnt about

keeping fit and healthy on our bikes and how to keep safe. We looked at exercise and healthy eating and in

ODL discussed this further while playing a running game and later, making a fruit salad for snack time, which

included, watermelon, grapes and blueberries. What a busy week, all of this running around should keep us

fit!!! Team Nursery

This week Reception have been learning about pirates, treasure maps, coordinates and positional language.

We enjoyed experimenting with items that float and sink and are eager to explore this further. The children

have enjoyed various pirate activities such as roleplay, walking the plank and making ships. We have all

enjoyed this learning and are looking forward to continuing with this fun and exciting topic.

Mrs Dennis and Miss Slade, Starfish class

KS1

Pelican class are looking forward to participating in the Year 6 Enterprise Day. The children have been

discussing and thinking about the value of money, what they can spend, to how much change they may have

left. They have been bringing in their money and looking forward to spending it on the different activities

today. Miss Carey, Pelican class

If you win the race with the Year 6’s, you get cream on a plate and put it on their face.

Devon, Pelican class

KS2

This week we have explored gender stereotypes in Year 3. As a year group we investigated what the children

thought a ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ job was and why. Then for each job we discussed, we broke the job down to see if it

really was a ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ job. The children’s conclusion was all jobs can be done by anyone, boys and girls.

You just have to work hard and be determined. Mr Porter, Rockpool class

This week Year 6 have been busy preparing for Enterprise Day. We have prepared business plans and applied

for a loan from the school to purchase prizes and other materials. Adverts have been made and we are ready

to raise some funds! We have also began to work on the leavers assembly, with some key speaking roles and

ideas for props decided. Mr Turner, Mayflower class

PTA News Inflatable Day - Thursday 5th July 4pm - 6pm for children aged 2-11 years. Wristbands are available to purchase

purchase on the day. Wristbands will be issued the week of the Inflatable Day. There will also be the

opportunity to purchase on the day, food from Eat Street and amazing face painting! We are always grateful

School dinner policy – a gentle reminder A gentle reminder that all school dinners should be paid for in advance so that your ParentPay account does

not go into arrears.

We recognise that people lead very busy lives and that checking ParentPay may not be top of your list of

priorities!

To ensure regular payments are made, and to prevent calls from our finance team could you please;

• Log in to your ParentPay account weekly to pay for school dinners in advance. You will only be

charged for meals that your child actually has, as these are registered on the day.

• If you are in arrears and are unable to make an immediate payment, please provide your child with

a packed lunch until such time as you can bring your ParentPay account into credit

• If you are experiencing any financial difficulties or difficulty with ParentPay, please contact the

finance team on 01702 509202 or e mail [email protected], who will be happy to help you.

Feedback from parents about an online payment system has been positive.

We are keen to succeed as a cashless school and to do so will continue to work with parents to ensure

everyone feels confident in using ParentPay.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Reminders Children should wear black school shoes with white or

black socks.

Reminders At Darlinghurst we are committed to being a healthy

school which is why we think it is important that our

pupils are eating healthy snacks. These should

comprise of fruit and vegetables only, unwrapped or

in a reusable pot in line with our commitment to the

environment as Eco Warriors.

Mrs Johnson, Wellbeing Manager

Dogs are not allowed access onto the school

grounds and should not be secured to the

surrounding school fences.

Please be considerate of our children, families and

our neighbours when travelling to and from school.

Please ride, drive or park responsibly. Please be

considerate of the hard work the school crossing

patrol officer does to keep us all safe.

Please ensure your contact details are correct, we

often share parental information via text and email.

Please contact the office should you wish to confirm

or amend the details we hold for you.
