Dark Heavens When a naïve young woman travels from her small California town to work as a nanny for a mysterious Beijing businessman, she does not realize that she will be caring for the child of a Chinese god temporarily living on earth. Nor does she expect to fall in love with him, become a master of Chinese martial arts — and be hunted across the globe by powerful demons in a deadly celestial power play.

We open on a great battle between the armies of the Demon King and that of Xuan Wu, the Chinese God of Martial Arts, Dark Lord of the Northern Heavens.

Xuan Wu is out for revenge after the murder of his beloved human wife by the Demon King’s second son, Ken Wong. Xuan Wu’s army wins the battle, but the demons get away with a parting taunt – they are coming after Xuan Wu’s child.

Two years later, 25-year-old Emma Donahoe, an English teacher in Beijing, interviews for a high-paying but notoriously difficult nanny job. She is greeted by a hulking American bodyguard named Leo, and the mysterious millionaire, John Chen, who gives her a one-week trial taking care of his 6-year-old daughter, Simone.

SYNOPSIS

Simone willfully rejects all of Emma’s efforts, but Emma learns that Simone lost her mother. Just as Emma is giving up hope of winning Simone over, she bonds with the little girl by sharing her own experience of losing her mother in a brutal murder that she witnessed. As she talks, Simone quietly reaches for Emma’s hand. That night, Mr. Chen asks Emma to stay on permanently.

Soon after, Emma begins noticing strange things. She has a near-death experience with an exploding truck that Leo and Mr. Chen play off a little too casually. She sees peculiar people in odd clothing in their penthouse, bowing to Mr. Chen and

addressing him as “My Lord”. She gets suspicious enough to do some investigating, but nothing gives her a believable answer… Until one day, she accidentally lets a demon disguised as a delivery boy into the house. The demon tries to snatch Simone and, in the ensuing fight, Emma instinctively punches him. The demon explodes into black goo all over her.

Emma almost quits, but changes her mind after a heartbreaking farewell with Simone. She bursts into Mr. Chen’s office. Chen calmly reveals that he is Xuan Wu, the 4000-year-old Chinese God of Martial Arts.

To eradicate her doubts, he summons over a single dark cloud in otherwise clear skies and makes rain. Emma is horrified to learn that the demons are after Simone, because drinking the blood of a half-human half-god child can bring the drinker immortality. She demands that Mr. Chen train her, so that she can protect Simone. He agrees. In the coming weeks, Emma reveals herself to be a very gifted martial arts student. She is skilled enough to hold her own when two demons spring a surprise attack on her. Concerned by the attack, Chen brings Emma, Simone and Leo with him on his business trip to Paris, where Emma meets the goddess, Mercy/Guan Yin.

When he needs a last-minute date, Chen invites Emma to his formal gala, upon Mercy’s suggestion. At the gala, she falls in love with a million dollar painting of a Mother and Daughter that is part of a charity auction. As the evening ends, she shares an intimate moment with Chen where he tells her the story of how he met his late wife and had to strike a deal with the Emperor God to be granted time on Earth with her. Things feel different between Chen and Emma after the gala. But before they get the chance to interact again, Chen is summoned back to Beijing to meet with the Emperor God.

Back in Beijing, after meeting with the Emperor God, Chen has an alarmingly serious farewell with Leo and Simone. It’s revealed that he has been on Earth on borrowed time and must return to the Celestial Realm. His original deal with the Emperor was that after his wife’s death, he would be confined to the Celestial Realm for 500 years. Chen has to convince the Emperor’s tribunal to grant him more time on Earth. Otherwise, he can’t come back. Emma is devastated, especially when she returns to her room and finds the painting of the Mother and Daughter from the gala, a gift to her from Chen.

During Chen’s nerve-wracking trial before the tribunal of the Gods in the Celestial Realm, Emma waits in agony on Earth, not knowing if he will return.

But he does, and after their joyful reunion, everything seems to be going well in their little household. One night, they finally kiss, leading Chen to reveal the truth: he was only granted two more years on Earth to protect Simone until her blood is no longer of value to the demons. A heartbroken Emma promises to stay with Simone. She and Chen give in to their love for one another – and despite everything, Emma is happier than she has ever been in her life.

Emma’s happiness is broken when she gets a call from California that her dad is ill and she must get home at once. Chen insists that they all go with her.

Emma, with Chen, Simone and Leo, returns to her farmhouse in rural Oceanside, only to find that it was a set-up by Ken Wong to lure Chen to a place where his power is weaker! A massive battle with hundreds of demons ensues. Chen is almost overpowered, but Emma saves the day by bringing out her father’s semi-automatic rifles and gunning down their attackers. Chen conjures a massive ocean wave to put out the fire on the farmhouse. During their efforts to save a

totally weakened Chen, Emma reconciles with her own father and learns that Chen wants to marry her…

With Chen restored to health, they return to Beijing to prepare for an extravagant Chinese wedding. Numerous Celestial beings, including dragons and the Monkey King come to pay their respects. However, on the wedding day, the demons switch the wedding litters, launching a tremendous surprise attack on the Gods, and kidnapping Emma and Simone into a strange room with no windows or doors. As Chen combats the demons in an epic battle, Emma confronts Ken Wong in the strange room.

Her worst nightmare of having Simone witness her rape and murder is about to come true, when suddenly, something wild and inhuman springs free in her, allowing her to overpower Ken. Ken’s brilliant but menacing older brother, Alexander shows up to bring her back to Chen and Leo.

The Gods acknowledge that the existing era of peace is over – the demons are up to something.

We end on a small, intimate wedding on a beautiful beach. Chen and Emma pledge to make the most of whatever time they have left.

We zoom out over the peaceful ocean – where a mysterious sea monster is lurking…
