over-the-rhinevision studyA viSion of otR, cincinnAtiSchickel Design partnered with Over-The-Rhine CommunityHousing to create a vision study of how a small portion of OTR could be transformed and renovated. Studies done in this project include site plans for the area, models of prospective buildings, and renders of what the site may look like.

It includes a “garden level apartment” which may be rented or used as a rec room, and two additional floors. A garage is located in the garden level and the top of the garage is a terrace.

As seen on the left, the Brownstone Model underwent many iterations before the final version was created. The final version is meant to blend in with the Victorian style housing that is commonplace in OTR, while not being directly Victorian itself.

commeRciAl modelS15th & RAce complexThe Vision Study also required new commercial and mixed use buildings. This schematic design at the corner of 15th and Race includes commercial shops on the ground floor, and residential on the upper levels. OTR Community Housing expressed interest in exploiting the existing brick structure on the site. Therefore, a glass atrium space is included around it, allowing than old mural on the side to be seen. These models were produced using Revit and Adobe Creative Suite.

poolhouse on the riverA SpA/poolhouSe deSiGn

pool houSe

The dominant feature of the site was the river that runs through it; the design for the poolhouse responds to this river in a variety of ways to create a nautical space throughout the poolhouse. The adjacent river provided unique inspiration for the poolhouse. As water might be forced around an object in a river, people are forced to move around obstacles in the design. As patrons circulate, the canopy above mimics the surface of water. Apertures in this canopy create light patterns that encourage movement throughout the space.

lAyeRinG There is a distinct layering of materials in the poolhouse. The concrete base is layered under the wooden walls, which is layered with metal columns, which is topped with the fabric canopy. These layers are all on distinct grids. The dynamic tension of the canopy creates a more open and energetic space upon entering the poolhouse and a more compressed atmosphere that discourages movement and encourages stopping towards the poolhouse’s termination.

This library was developed through a series of initial site studies, including the previous sketches. Based on these studies, the design was massed through physical and digital models intermittently. The final design focused on the evolution of the library. The further one penetrated the space of the library, the more modern its functions became.

The floor plans of the Clifton Branch Library display the organization grid prominently. The relationship between the angles of the site was meant to be reflected in plans. The floor plans were produced using Revit.

Sequence

Interior qualities were an important part of the development process for the Clifton Branch Library. The library’s program necessitated large, open spaces suitable for heavy circulation, and smaller, more comfortable spaces suitable for individuals to occupy for reading. The interior perspectives shown here were produced using a variety of media, including Revit, hand rendering techniques, and Adobe Creative Suit.

The perspectives below demonstrate how a person might approach the library from the street. The sequence of drawings details the spatial changes a user feels as they enter the compressed entry-way of the library from the street before being released into the atrium.

new kind of brick:

The final project of first year architecture was a class project. The studio of 16 people was assigned to make a spatial unit that could be mass produced and configured to encompass 600 cubic feet of space. The studio elected me as project manager. In this position, I assisted with the design process, delegated tasks, and managed deadlines.

The unit was designed so one side would be flat while another side could be rough and extruded. Stained OSB and birch were used to create a tessellating pattern. The different materials also emphasized the central heavy piece apart with its lighter additions.

ridgway housingwooneRf deSiGn & the livinG StReetThis proposed design for Ridgeway uses the idea of a “woonerf” or living street. This is a street type that utilizes such conventions as curved roads, few sign markings, and integrated parking to create an interaction between the pedestrians, drivers, and environment. This idea of woonerf streets reinforces the idea of creating a community environment through housing design.

RidGewAy Avenue Site StudyAs a way to both connect the superblocks and utilize existing greenspace, the following housing plans both use pedestrian paths to cut across the blocks. By adding connectivity and pedestrian access to the spaces, the commercial districts along Reading Road may be revitalized.
