Dare to Make a Change:
Team Donna Coleman
Senior Project 2015Jolie Richards and Belmira Machado
Our Project…
• Donna Coleman, a dear family friend of Jolie Richards passed away in March of
2014 due to pancreatic cancer, to honor that, we wanted to collect proceeds in
honor of Donna and donate all the money we made in her name to the Lustgarten Foundation (a non-profit organization
who’s mission is to advance scientific and medical research related to the diagnosis,
treatment, cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer). We also maintained a healthy and positive lifestyle, and to do so we have been eating healthy, working
out daily and have promised to walk for a purpose of at least 40 miles.
GoFundMe and W&OD trail…
• People interested in donating to our senior project donated through
GoFundMe and then we transferred all the money we collected into one big
donation to the Lustgarten Foundation.
• We walked and tracked all of our miles on the W&OD trail, we walked 2 miles a day
starting on May 20th.
Our flyer…
• We got people to have knowledge about our senior project via a flyer that
we created.
• We went around to local businesses in Purcellville and Leesburg and asked if
we could hang up our flyer at their store.
Our sponsors…
• Joyce Phillips: Health and PE teacher here at Loudoun Valley generously was
our school sponsor, guiding and helping us in any way she could.
• Olympus Gym: Local gym here in Purcellville offered to be our
community sponsor after the owner talked to us about a relatable experience she had involving
pancreatic cancer.

While on the trail…
Our mean plan…• Breakfast: fruit with oatmeal, yogurt, cereal or egg whites.
• Mid-morning snack: fruit and spinach smoothie with either whey or supplement.
• Lunch: salad with grilled chicken, nuts, and dried cranberries with a lemon and oil dressing.
• Mid-day snack: vegetables with low fat hummus or a protein bar.
• Dinner: fist size of any type of meat (we usually did grilled chicken or turkey burgers) along with a side of vegetables and some sort of healthy carb (we usually did chopped up sweet potatoes with seasoning).
• Dessert: fruit mixed with some cinnamon and sugar.
Our meal plan continued…
• We drank 64 ounces of water a day.
• Of course we had some cheat days and snuck in a little piece of candy or
sugary juice once in a while, but for the majority of our senior project we
followed this meal plan and loved how it made us feel on the inside and out!
While on the trail…
Our last day! Woo hoo!!
While on the trail…
Our last day! Hooray!!
While on the trail…
We did it!!
Overall…
• Overall we loved our senior project, it was a wonderful experience and it was
for a great cause that was personal. Although we had a donation goal in mind, the money was not what our
senior project was all about, we wanted to raise awareness of
Pancreatic caner and demonstrate ways to keep up with a healthy body and mindset, and we did just that!
