Never Lose Faith in PeopleOn Wednesday, February 22, a DCC student stepped into my office distraught that she had lost her wallet

with $80 in it, but nothing in the wallet to identify who she was. She had just come from the Justice Club Hot Dog Sale. We walked her route and asked others at the Hot Dog Sale and walked it again with no avail. We called security but no one had turned in a wallet. While I was trying to arrange to review camera footage of her route, she walked to the library just to see if someone had turned it in there. And sure enough, there was the wallet with the $80 still intact. No one knew who the person was that turned in the wallet, and the student with the lost wallet wanted to thank her…..not for returning her money….but for reaffirming her faith that people want to do good and will do so the majority of the time. Of course, getting the money back was good also, but not as important as the good deed done for her. Remember, small acts of kindness ripple throughout society and have unintended consequences for the good.

Don’t forget to do an act of kindness when presented with the opportunity.

RECYCLE ALUMINUM CANS

There are containers around campus marked Aluminum Cans Only. Phi Theta Kappa members regularly empty these containers as a service to the College

and the community. The cans are used by Habitat for Humanity to purchase wood to build houses. Please use these for cans, not trash.

You will also find plastic baggies for the tabs from the cans in the Taylor Building Break Room and outside Ms. Sherry Gott’s office in the Temple Building. These are used to get free treatment for a local patient.

The “Wellness Corner” ThisWonderfulFoodWillHelpYouLiveLonger

Wouldn't it be nice to discover a food that reduces your risk of death from heart disease, infectious and respiratory diseases and, in fact, reduces your risk of death from all causes?

This wonder food exists, and the good news is that you don't have to wait for it to be produced. It's available to everyone right now.

It's called fiber, but not just any fiber. The fiber from grains is what offers the magic of a longer life. That's a proven fact.

The National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study shows that fiber from grains has the strongest association with reduced mortality. The fiber in vegetables and beans was far less effective, and the fiber from fruit had no life lengthening qualities.

This was just one of the studies in 35 to 40 years of research on grain fibers. The largest study, by The National Cancer Institute, compared the fiber intake of 219,123 men and 168,999 women ages 50 to 71. Over a nine-year period, those in the highest grain fiber group were 22 percent less likely to die of any cause.

All of this simply means that eating whole-grain bread, cereals and crackers will help you avoid conditions that could shorten your life!

An excerpt from

AttitudeisEverythingby Vicki Hitzges

I used to worry. A lot. The more I fretted, the more proficient I became at it. Anxiety begets anxiety. I even worried that I worried too much! Ulcers might develop. My health could fail. My finances could deplete to pay the hospital bills.

A comedian once said, "I tried to drown my worries with gin, but my worries are equipped with flotation devices." While not a drinker, I certainly could identify! My worries could swim, jump and pole vault!

To get some perspective, I visited a well known, Dallas businessman, Fred Smith. Fred mentored such luminaries as motivational whiz Zig Ziglar, business guru Ken Blanchard and leadership expert John Maxwell. Fred listened as I poured out my concerns and then said, "Vicki, you need to learn to wait to worry."

As the words sank in, I asked Fred if he ever spent time fretting. (I was quite certain he wouldn't admit it if he did. He was pretty full of testosterone—even at age 90.) To my surprise, he confessed that in years gone by he had been a top-notch worrier!

"I decided that I would wait to worry!" he explained. "I decided that I'd wait until I actually had a reason to worry—something that was happening, not just something that might happen—before I worried."

"When I'm tempted to get alarmed," he confided, "I tell myself, 'Fred, you've got to wait to worry! Until you know differently, don't worry.' And I don't. Waiting to worry helps me develop the habit of not worrying and that helps me not be tempted to worry."

Fred possessed a quick mind and a gift for gab. As such, he became a captivating public speaker. "I frequently ask audiences what they were worried about this time last year. I get a lot of laughs," he said, "because most people can't remember. Then I ask if they have a current worry—you see nods from everybody. Then I remind them that the average worrier is 92% inefficient—only 8% of what we worry about ever comes true."

Charles Spurgeon said it best. "Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, but only empties today of its strength."

SingleSudoku

Solution

To solve a sudoku puzzle, you only need logic and patience. No math is required. Simply make sure that each 3x3 square region has a number 1 through 9 with only one occurrence of each number. Each column and row of the large grid must have only one instance of the numbers 1 through 9.

The difficulty rating on this puzzle is easy.

What’s So Special About . . .

American Red Cross Month. Every year, the president proclaims March “American Red Cross Month” to encourage citizens to volunteer and participate in the important work this valuable organization performs in time of war and natural disaster.

Music in Our Schools Month. As education budgets get slashed because of the tough economy, school music programs are increasingly endangered. The purpose of Music in Our Schools Month is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children, and to remind citizens that school is a prime location for children to have access to music.

Social Work Month. “Social Work Matters” is the theme of Social Work Month 2012, sponsored by the National Associations of Social Workers. A key message for this year’s celebration is that social workers are the safety net in a civil society, contributing to the community’s health, mental health, aging, schools, veterans services, community agencies, local politics and more.

Peace Corps Day, March 1. On this date in 1961, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps, a Cold War effort to enlist civilians to volunteer their time and skills in underdeveloped nations assisting them in any way they could.

National Procrastination Week, March 4-10. The Procrastinators’ Club of America (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) marks this as a week to promote the benefits of putting off until tomorrow everything that needn’t be done today.

International Women’s Day, March 8. Thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.

Girl Scout Week, March 11-17. Celebrated every year during the week of March 12, when Juliette Gordon Low officially registered the organization’s first 18 girl members in 1912 in Savannah, Ga.

Brain Awareness Week, March 12-18. A global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. Events may include open days at neuroscience labs; exhibitions about the brain; lectures on brain-related topics; displays at libraries and community centers; classroom workshops; and more.

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. Break out the green, read some James Joyce, and try to catch a leprechaun.

National Puppy Day, March 23. Adopt a puppy, donate toys or blankets to your local animal shelter, or buy your own puppy a new toy.

Root Canal Awareness Week, March 25-31. A root canal may sound painful, but not getting one when needed could be worse. Root Canal Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness of the role of endodontists—root canal specialists who bring high-quality care, compassion, and comfort to their patients, and who deserve recognition for their service and commitment.
