(CNNMoney) Just when it seemed mortgage rates weren’t going to get any lower, they started testing new lows. In the tumultuous days following Standard & Poor’s debt downgrades, rates on 30-year fixed mortgages fell to 4.32%, down from 4.39% last week and closed in on a record low of 4.17% set last November, according to Freddie Mac’s Primary Mortgage Market Survey.

Participation in sports and exercise are an important step in maintaining your health. Unfortunately, injuries are all too common. Often, these injuries occur in someone who is just starting a sport or exercise regimen and doesn’t properly stretch or prepare themselves. Others may over train and not allow enough time to rest. Research has shown that chiropractic care is helpful with pain reduction and more rapid recovery.

Locally Owned & Loved

Doctors of Audiology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Healthy Bodies Don’t Need Supplements DEAR DR. ROACH: After viewing an infomercial that praised the benefits of probiotics, I would like to know what you think. Probiotics have been prescribed when one is taking antibiotics to replenish the good bacteria that is lost.

When taking no medication, I found that when I took one capsule (30 billion live cultures per capsule/10 probiotic strains) on a daily basis, I would get gas and diarrhea; therefore, I stopped taking them. I thought that this was the exact opposite reaction that should have occurred. Please write about the pros and cons and the reasons/necessity for taking probiotics on a daily basis. -- D.A.M.

ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract.

However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symptoms. Probiotics haven’t been shown to benefit healthy people. Any treatment can have side effects.

While there may be some benefits, such as preventing antibiotics- associated diarrhea, I hesitate before recommending any treatment to a healthy, asymptomatic person.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Does high blood pressure cause irregular or abnormal heart rhythms? -- P.K.S.

ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely.

High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it’s more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure.

That being said, since it is possible they are related, it’s certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don’t have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities.

The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A.

ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it’s important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Freshen Up Your Home

While you’re setting goals for the new year, consider adding

updating the look of your home to your list. If your walls are

looking a little dated, follow these suggestions to give your

space a renewed look.

The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your

home, and it deserves a fresh look this year. Pair a subtle

neutral shade with brights and whites for a balanced design,

and snooze in style with quaint and quiet color. To complete

the look, give your bed a fresh update with a new pintuck

duvet cover. Accessorize with decorative pillows, curtains or

rugs.

Why not dial up the color in your living room? This area of

your home accommodates many visitors throughout the year

and is likely where your family spends a great deal of your

time. To create an inviting space, try a robust color like teal.

When matched with natural wood finishes, organic shapes and

soft, sophisticated tones, this color allows you to live a little

but still maintains a down-to-earth feel.

If your eat-in kitchen or dining room could use a taste of

color try a rich red with attitude, this hue adds a fun, young

flavor to any room. Use it liberally, but achieve balance by

using a contrasting color with just as much abandon. Darker

accent pieces, such as a hutch or buffet, as well as white

cabinets, are great complements.

Even the most casual half-bath can take on a sophisticated

feel with the right wall color and accessories. A chic look starts

w ith blue on the walls and repeated in key accessories like area

rugs or hand towels. Finish the room by adding a new mirror

to open up your space and other storage, such as open

shelving, to minimize counter clutter.

If you’re in need of a quick overhaul of your home office, go

for a confident, intense, strong, deep blue. Combine with a

single complementary hue in comfortable furnishings and

accessories.

“Observance of Presidents’ Day” On Monday, February 15th, the Library will be closed in observance of Presidents’ Day. Before the Monday Holiday laws, we observed both Pres. Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on February 11 and Pres. George Washington’s birthday on February 22. Combining the observances allows us to celebrate ALL our Presidents on one special holiday. While we are closed, you can deposit your returns in the drive up Book Drop at the back of the Library. Then the doors will reopen on Tuesday, February 16th at 10:00 a.m. And don’t forget -- you can renew your materials online by going to dansvillelibrary.org and clicking on “online catalog.”

“Winter Tea Party” It is “tea time” at Dansville Public Library. On Saturday, February 27th at 1:00 p.m., Mrs. Brandy Olsheski will host a “Winter Tea Party” for children of all ages and one special guest. This is the eighth year of an event celebrating Mothers, Grandmothers, Aunts, or any special Lady in the life of your child. You can come as you are or dress up in your “finest” to enjoy tea, special music, and a light snack. Tickets are required and are available at the Library’s Main Desk. A donation of $3.00 per person is requested. The “Winter Tea Party” is co-sponsored by the Library and the Friends of the Library. Space is limited; get your tickets soon!

“Welcome Rhea Walker” The Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of our newest Board Member, Rhea Walker of Ossian. Rhea replaces Nancy Wolfanger whose term would have expired in June 2016. Nancy continues as the Treasurer to the Board but will be ex-officio. Rhea serves as historian to the Town of Ossian, and her interest in libraries is clearly evident by her efforts helping to establish a “Little Library” at the Ossian Town Hall building where borrowers can access books closer to their homes in the Ossian hills. Welcome, Rhea!

One Final Note: Friends of the Library are receiving their Winter Newsletter. You too can become a “Friend” – stop in to join or print out the form available at the library’s website. Join today! If you aren’t sure if your dues are paid for 2016, give us a call at 585-335-6720.

“Take your Child to the Library Day” Please join us at the Library on Saturday, February 6th from Noon – 2:00 p.m. For “Take Your Child to the Library Day,” an international initiative that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library. While you are here, you can enjoy crafts and refreshments! Browse the children’s book collection and learn more about YOUR public library! And if you have always planned to sign up your child for a library card, this is the day! “Take Your Child to the Library Day” reminds our community about the importance of the library in the life of a child. It gives us a chance to promote all the library services and programs for our children and families.

“It’s Family Movie Night at the Library – with Dinner!” Back by popular demand, and SO popular that we are having two movie nights a month, Family Movie Night at the Library begins February 9th at 5:30 p.m. Family Movie night will continue on the second and fourth Tuesdays through April 26th. The Library appreciates the sponsors of Movie Night whose donations provide pizza and drinks at each showing. February 9th sponsors are Tony’s Pizzeria and Peter & Sarah Goins. Our movie on February 23rd is sponsored by Tony’s Pizzeria and Wanda Schillinger. You might want to bring a comfy pillow to sit on and even your favorite blanket to snuggle into while you watch. You don’t want to miss this special Family event. For more information, please call Ms. Brandy at (585)335- 6720. [Note: please call the Library ahead of the showing for movie titles: Licensing rules prevent public advertising of movie titles.]

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment

Arrange private swaps: Many people find it advantageous to host their own swaps of clothing and other items among friends or neighbors. Parents of school-aged children find that sharing clothing helps them to save a good deal of money. Sporting equipment or bicycles the kids may have outgrown can be shared with parents of younger children.

When proposing a swap with fellow parents, inquire as to whether anyone has items that they no longer need or could be seeking things that you have. Parents may be anxious to rid themselves of items or take items off your hands.

Scrapbooks can help document your year

Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways.

Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was.

Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book.

The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire.

For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful.

• Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a medium-sized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving.

• Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you.

• Indulge in some craft-store shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages that require little work on the part of scrapbookers.

• Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful.

• Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents.

• Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book.

• Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

Showcase the special memories of the year ahead by starting a scrapbook.

Reinvent leftovers with a wrap

Leftovers can be a nutritious lunch option that also saves you a

lot of money, but how many times do you get stuck eating the

same thing twice. Reinvent your leftovers by using a tortilla

wrap. Whole-wheat wraps are great for just about anything -

fill w ith your leftover pork, beef or chicken, add some cheese

and salsa, and you now have a zesty wrap that is good for you

too. You can also add rice to a wrap along with leftover meat or

beans for a tasty and satisfying creation. Tortillas can stay fresh

for long time, so buy a package and store it in a sealed

container in the fridge so this handy food is always available

for creative lunching.

Dreaded hat hair is a major dow nside to w inter w eather. By follow ing a few tips, anyone can avoid hat hair:

• M ake sure hair is completely dry before donning a hat. Damp hair can dry in the shape of the hat.

• Use an anti-frizz serum to tame flyaw ays that occur w hen hats are removed.

• Choose a w ell-fitting hat. Hats that are too small can cause dents and creases.

Schuster’s Boosters plan special event Bill Schuster, an NFL official and

umpire at Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, is engaged in an even bigger contest as he battles esophageal cancer. The Livonia native and owner of Umpire Insurance in Lakeville is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

This has been a challenging time for both Bill and his wife Mary - physically, mentally, emotionally and financially, and it will continue to be so throughout a long period of recovery. A few of Bill’s closest friends have decided that this would be an excellent time for a community get- together to show Bill and Mary how much we all love and support them.

Please join us for a very special evening of food, fun and entertainment by attending the much-anticipated “Official Saturday Night Schuster Booster Party” on February 27th at 7:00pm at the Geneseo Quality Inn.

There will be food and drink, along with a silent auction featuring some fabulous gifts, and a raffle for the less adventurous. Schuster’s friends are working on a number of other terrific ideas, and will share more information as it becomes available.

For now, please set aside the date, Saturday, February 27th. Ticket prices are $50 for individuals or $75 per couple.

If anyone has ideas on how to enhance the evening, or to help secure prize donations for the auction and/or raffle, please contact Terry McCarron at 738-9650/[email protected] or Andy Mattle at 750-9577/ [email protected] at your earliest convenience. We’d love to hear from you!

Presale Tickets are available at ReMax Hometown Choice in Lakeville or by contacting Terry or Andy. (Facebook Schuster Booster) Tickets will also be available at the door.

Thanks to two Geneseo Walmart Shoppers for helping me when I dislocated my shoulder while checking out at Walmart. You both kept me calm even when I was in so much pain until my husband and the ambulance got to me. Thank you again for helping me.

Pay It Forward! Thanks to the man at Brockport Aldi’s who offered me his cart in the parking lot and wouldn’t accept the quarter. It made my day! Even small acts of kindness or a smile can make a big difference and brighten someone’s day. p.s. I left the cart unlocked for someone else to use after I was done shopping.

Thank you so very much to the person at the Lakeville Dunkin Donuts on Weds., 1/20, at approx. 7:10 am. I pulled up to the window to pay for my hot chocolate and my wife’s coffee. I was told it was paid for. This has never

“Happy Holiday”

(sometimes performed as

“Happy Holidays”) is a

popular song composed by

Irving Berlin during 1941

and published the following

year ... LONG before all this

political correctness started!

It was introduced by Bing

Crosby in the 1942 film

“Holiday Inn.” Commonly

regarded as a Christmas

song, it was performed on

New Year’s Eve in the film

and expressed a wish for the

listener to enjoy “happy

holidays” throughout the

entire year. The song helped

to popularize the phrase

“Happy holidays” as a

common greeting during the

Christmas and holiday

season in the United States.

I used to look forward to my

husband belting out “Happy

Holidays” (the only 2 words

he would sing) in his deep

voice every year until he

passed in 2012. BTW, I also

say Merry Christmas!

I live in a very nice

neighborhood, many

professionals, families, and

retirees. Unfortunately, on

trash day when there are

high winds forecast (there

are four different trash

companies servicing the

neighborhood, each with a

different pick-up day) many

residents just place the

recyclables on the curb the

night before. Due to the

prevailing winds, the

blowing trash that does not

get caught on neighbors’

fences ends up at the

entrance of the

neighborhood, creating a

‘royal’ mess. Please, if you

must put the trash out

early, secure it; put the

heavy glass on top or find

another solution. Please be

environmentally

responsible and stop

making the neighborhood

the town dump.

To the coyote hunters

who use dogs and drive

white trucks: I know your

dogs can’t read a posted

sign. But that does not give

you the right to disobey the

signs unless you don’t care.

I know it is cheaper to pay

fines then it is to own your

own land. If I catch you on

my land I will have you

arrested.

happened to me before. I was totally shocked. Thank you so much for making our day. I was so flabbergasted that I did not think to pay for the person behind me. However, I will be paying this forward at my next Dunkin Donut stop. You are such a nice person!

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the care and compassion Dr. Gshrey and his staff gave my dog Nikki and me. Even though it was such a difficult time and a terrible thing to go through, it was made a little easier by such caring people. Thank you for being there for us.

Thanks to the Cal-Mum student who went to the concession stand for me at intermission for “Airline” on Saturday, January 23 in the p.m. He was very pleasant and did not mind standing in line. Teenagers are A - OKAY!

I am so happy to see one of our local supermarkets is helping us senior citizens in our golden years as we age with our math skills. Buy One Get One Free, Buy 2 get 3 Free, 2 for $10, 3 for $5, 10 for $10 and so on. Really makes you think. What does just 1 cost?

When to begin saving for retirement - A person may also

want to establish an IRA (individual retirement account). IRAs,

which are available as traditional IRAs or Roth IRAs, are

typically offered through financial establishments and provide

tax-friendly ways to save for retirement. There are differences

between traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs, and these differences

are related to taxes and may depend on when contributions

are made as well as when withdrawals are made. Speak with

a financial planner to help you determine the IRA best suited

to your personal needs.

How To Banish Stress • Try exercise: Exercise can be very good at pumping endorphins through the body, which provide a feel-good sensation. Exercise can also work the tension out of the body and give your mind something else to think about.

• Do something you enjoy: Maybe you enjoy the pampering of a massage or pedicure, or the thrill of being out on the golf course. Turn your mind to a task you enjoy and take some time out to do it. A life balanced by work and enjoyable activities could be less stressful.

• Talk to a doctor: Some bio-feedback or counseling may guide you through ways to alleviate stress. A family physician may also think it’s a good idea to prescribe medication, primarily if stress is short-term from a traumatic event. You can work with doctors to develop a program that works for you and your overall health.
