NICU Rotation

This week i was in the NICU. i was very excited for this rotation because this is the career that i am interested in. i would love to be a Neonatal Nurse. the first day really wasn’t that great. i didn’t like my nurse too much. it was a slow day so it wasn’t that interesting. the second day was a lot better. i followed around the charge nurse. I saw a baby being admitted because he had fluid in his lungs. during his admittance, one of the nurses asked me to go change another baby’s diaper because this baby was crying. then i came back to the baby who just got there and the charge nurse asked me to lift the baby up while she changed the linens. she then took me around to another pod and showed me the smallest babies in the NICU. one being 1 lb 6 oz and the other being 1 lb 4 oz. it was a great day and it made me want to become a Neonatal Nurse even more.

Rehab

I was at rehab this week. I was with both an OT and PT. I was excited to be there because PT and OT are two careers that ive been interested in for about 5 years. the first day was pretty simple. a lot of paperwork but that is understandable. We helped a 65 year old women get out of bed. she was there because she randomly lost sensation in her legs. The OT told me that this woman had a stroke at birth. i thought that was interesting. her left arm was contorted and when she would walk, her left foot was in a 90 degree angle facing outwards. the 2nd day was incredibly sad. i ended up crying at the end of my rotation. i saw a 64 day old baby girl in the burn unit. she was very tiny. maybe about the size of a shoe box. she had  burns on her face, both arms, her torso, and her right leg. i asked the OT how the baby was doing and she said “she isn’t doing to well. she isn’t doing great, but she is stable." those words have been running through my head all day. its really bothering me and i cant stop thinking about this baby girl. day 2 was incredibly difficult for me to handle.

7 West

I was in General Surgery (7W) this week. It wasn’t too interesting. but luckily i followed around a very funny nurse. We didn’t do much except to check on patients. She made the day go by really fast because of how entertaining she was. It was a great rotation.

Radiology

This week, i was in the radiology department at St. Joe. this was by far the best rotation i have been on so far. i saw so many x-rays. i also went on a lot of portables. everyone at the st. joe radiology department were so nice and i laughed so much. they last xray i saw on the 1st day of rotation was pretty sad. it was a 6 year old autisitc boy. he couldnt stop crying and screaming. he was holding onto his mom for dear life. it made me want to cry because he didnt understand what was going on. it was sad to feel helpless. over all, radiology was a lot of fun and by far the most entertaining rotation ive had.

OR

I was in the OR last week. I really loved it. i saw the removal of a gull bladder and the appendix (both laparoscopic.) and then i saw the Da Vinci remove a very enlarged kidney. The next day i saw the Da Vinci, again, remove a prostate which was extremely awesome to see. and then i saw another gull bladder removal and a cleaning of the bladder and urinary tract. It was a great 2 days in the OR. The nurses weren’t too nice, but the surgeons were extremely nice and I loved that they explained everything that they were doing. it was great.

The hand washing skits were a great experience. Although sometimes unorganized, it was all for the great Outcome of educating young children and preventing illness. Children may not always know the proper way to wash Their hands so it was great for us to come in and teachThem. We were separated into groups. Each group had at least 5 people and the same equipment. We started off by introducing ourselves and then asking

the kids a few questions. Wethen discussed a poster thatwe made that shows how to properly wash your hands. Then we sang a song called “Washy Washy Clean ScrubScrub!” The kids really enjoyed it. Then we picked a volunteer to put on “magic hand lotion”, put their hands under a black light, and it showed how many germs were

on their hands. We had the class come around and see and we it again after the student washed his/her hands. Then we passed out coloring pages, tooth brushes, and soap for all students. It was a great experience.

Labor and delivery nurse:These nurses work closely with the soon to be mothers. They help them with breathing techniques, help them get up and walk around, and get them set up for delivery. They do basically everything up until the doctor gets into the room to deliver the baby. But in some cases, if the doctor doesn’t get there in time, the nurse will have to deliver the baby because the baby is ready to come out.

Neonatal nurse:Neonatal nurses take care of premature babies or babies that are born sick. They treat the babies, feed the babies, and change their diapers too. They are very nurturing and patient. This is the career that I plan to pursue because I love being around babies and I believe I am a caring and loving person and would be great for this job.

Surgical Technician Surgical Technicians must know sterilize and prepare the operating room. They must know what tools and other materials will be needed for the surgery. During surgery, they must know the names of several different pieces of equipment because the doctor will ask them to bring whatever they need and they must be quick. They help the doctor and others operating on the patient by making them sterile as well.

Physical therapistPT’s help patients that have more serious problems like helping patients regain movement in their limbs. They help them walk, go up and down stairs, sit up and down, and other things that we usually take for granted. They are not as precise as OT’s.

Occupational therapistOT’s are very specific. They help, usually the elderly, with lifting small objects and even just lifting up their hand. They usually help stoke victims. They are very viable to society because they make people become independent once again.

PsychologistPsychologists help people that have mental problems. They help people organize their thoughts and are their as a gateway for people’s emotions. They allow patients to vent on them and try very hard to cure them and help them understand life more easily. There are several different types of psychologists and I would enjoy being a child psychologist.

It was very beneficial to have professionals come in and talk to us about their careers. It allowed us to see the different tasks it takes to become a professional in the medical field. We learned how to intubate a patient and how to draw blood from an artery. We learned about the required education to get into specific careers like nursing and psychology. We learned about what it takes and the personality you need to succeed in the career. It was a great privilege to listen to the knowledge of these professionals.

Overall, I am very thankful and grateful to be apart of this program. It introduced me to nursing and now I plan on becoming a neonatal nurse. This Health Academy has shown me several different careers and has opened my eyes to so many different parts of the medical field. I am so glad I was chosen to be in this Academy. It was a wonderful semester with amazing people and great new friends. Thank you to everyone who made this possible for me and my classmates. We are all very thankful.
