Daniel and his thr ee friends lived in Isr ael. Oneday a great king c ame to their homeland and tookall the smart youn g men away to his cou ntry. Theking had a huge lo ng name - Nebuchadne zzar - andhe lived in a faraw ay country called Bab ylon.

T he young men were treated very well in Babylon.T he king had chos en the brightest and b est youngmen from every c ountry in the world. H e planned tot rain them in the language of Babylon so they couldbecome his servan ts and help him run th e kingdom.

Daniel asked the p erson in charge of his trainingf or permission not to eat the king's foo d. If theking found out, he would be very angry. But Godhad made Daniel a favorite with this ma n.

He agreed to give Daniel and his friends a test. Fort en days they wou ld eat only vegetables and drinkonly water. At th e end of ten days Dani el and hisf riends looked mu ch healthier than all t he other

young men who ate the king's food. So t hey wereallowed to continu e with vegetables and water.

T hese young men honored God. And God honoredt hem. God gave t hem knowledge and ski ll in thet hings they learne d, and Daniel had wisd om tounderstand all visi ons and dreams.

After three years o f school inBabylon, all the young menwere presented to K ingNebuchadnezzar. H e pickedDaniel and his three friends asthe best of them al l. In fact,the King discovered that Daniel

had more wisdom th an all thewise men in his kingdom.

One night, the kin g had a bad dream. H e called forhis magicians, ast rologers and sorcerers to comeand stand before him. The king said, "I havedreamed a dream, and my spirit is anxio us tounderstand the dr eam."T he wise men ans wered,"O king, live for e ver!

T ell your servants t he dream, and we will tell you what

it means."

T he king responde d, "No! You must tell me what Idreamed and what it means. If you don t, you willbe cut in pieces a nd your houses burned !But if you tell me the dream andwhat it means," th e kingcontinued, "you will receivegifts and rewards and great

honor." Of cours e, none oft he wise men could tell theking his dream.

T he king's wise m en told the king, "Ther e is not aman on the earth that can do what you a sk. Onlyt he gods can do t hat, and they don't live on earth." T he king got very angry. "Destroy all th e wise menof Babylon!" he commanded.

When the soldiers came for Daniel, hesaid to Arioch, th e king's captain,"Why is the king d estroying all thewise men?" Then Arioch toldDaniel everything that hadhappened. Daniel went tosee the king. He asked formore time so he c ould tellt he king the mean ingof his dream.

T hen Daniel went to his house, andt old everything to his friendsShadrach, Meshac h and Abednego.Daniel didn't know what the dreamwas or what it me ant, but he knewSomebody who knows everything.T hat Somebody is God. So, Danieland his friends pr ayed.

God showed Daniel the dream and its me aning.Daniel blessed the God of heaven, sayin g, "Blessedbe the name of Go d for ever and ever, f or wisdomand might are His ." Daniel hurried to th e king andsaid to him, "Ther e is a God in heaven who reveals

secrets." He told the k ing what hehad dr eamed and

what thedreammeant.

When King Nebuchadnezzar heard the d ream andit s meaning, he fe ll down before Daniel and said,"Truly your God is a God of gods, and a Lordof kings, and a rev ealer of secrets,since you could re veal this secret!"T hen the king mad e Daniel a greatman, and gave him many greatgifts. He made him rulerover the wholeprovince of

Babylon, andchief over allt he wise men

of Babylon.
