I was born in Medellín in December 1986 as the newest member of a family of designers, architects and engineers. I was named Daniel; my last names Gutiérrez Zapata were certain before my birth. Art and design, in their broadest conception, became an interestinterest since the early years. Paintings and sculptures I saw at museums, theater and movie posters, and pictures from architecture books and magazines which nested at home would slowly define my professional orientation and a curiosity for creation. Maybe it was this broad creative interest which led me to the Product Design EngineeringEngineering program in Universidad EAFIT after graduating from Gimnasio Los Alcázares in 2005, seeking an education that combines art and science, theory and practice, the human and the technical. What started as an interest turned into fascination, motivating a quest for the creative object that results when industry and art come together. Lately, I feel an attraction for space and architecture could be my next step.

II speak English, and I like writing as well. For projects I use pencil and paper, SolidWorks and Adobe Photoshop, with occasional uses of AutoCAD, ProEngineer and ANSYS. I’m involved in a university group called “Product Language”, researching about cities and public street furniture. I’ve worked for clients like Socoda S.A. (http://www.socoda.com.co/) in research topics, designed exhibition stands and furniture for Tragaluz Editores (http://ww(http://www.tragaluzeditores.com/) and also participated in a few graphic/product contests. I’ve assisted courses for CSWA (Certified SolidWorks Associate) certification in EAFIT/CEC and a Creative Facilitation seminar by Marc Tassoul and Helga Hohn from TUDelft.

I love diversity in projects. I’m as interested in designing book layouts as I am in creating exhibition stands or furniture modules. I’m a true believer in a multidisciplinary approach as a basis for a successful project. I also think ideas need to be exchanged and necessities have to be discussed before drawing, and that human issues are key. I admire Gandhi, Le Corbusier, Alexander Calder, Renzo Piano, Álvaro Mutis, Luis Barragán and Elías Zapata, among many others.many others.

I like traveling, all kinds of books, vinyl records and black coffee. We can chat about anything else over a cup of Colombian Dark Roast.

Project developed for the course “Proyecto 5”, dealing with mobility and transportation issues. For the first time, an exploration around water-focused solutions was proposed where the result was a formally and functionally innovative concept focused on recreational activities. Team work between students, professors, researchers and sponsoring companies managed set a record in a nationally unexploredunexplored field, and pushed the limits of the course’s boundaries. The results were renowned among the public and the student community.

3 The concept unifies the traditional notions of a jetski and a boat, creating a hybrid which combines the hull and dimensional characteristics of the former with the mechanical and luxury features of the latter.25-HP outboard motor with custom command system, laminated security glass, navigation lightning and GPS system are some of the prototype’s features.

Collaborative work with the Mélodie Lounge throughout a semester for the course “Proyecto 6”. Envisioned as a mobile system for event catering, which minimized ingredient loss while it expedited the preparation process of four kinds of martini cocktails, the solution integrated individual containers through the electronic automatization of recipes. The development of an individual corporate identity around the olive, supported by the graphic system based on famous martini lovers were key factors in the results.martini lovers were key factors in the results.

Popular icons and famous martini lovers like James Bond, Frank Sinatra and Ernest Hemingway were used as references and helped bolster the brand.

4 The corporate identity was created around the olive, a key element in a classic martini, complemented by a clean and simple typographic work. The oval shapes are constants in the product and the elements that make up the graphic system, such as posters, coasters, aprons and recipe magnets. Fabrica de Licores Antioquia sponsored a tasting with the fully functional prototype.

Publicparksfor theelderlyAcademicproject2008

Originating from worldwide influential social issues like population aging, a project with a public nature was proposed for parks in Medellín.Medellín. A series of multifunctional modules integrate several cardiovascular, driving and strengthening exercises focused on third age population. Sports are presented both as an excuse for social integration and as a means towards a healthy lifestyle. By complementing the existing public street furniture, they pretend to add to the transformation process undertaken by the city.

Light structures and a low technological level seek to break user/product barriers, pointing towards an intuitive operation of each module.

Every module tries to integrateintegrate as many exercises as possible, leaving options open for the user to do strengthening activities by the means of thera-band rubbers.

Besides the public field, the concept is suitable for private contexts such as gymnasiums, hospitals, therapy centers and special residences for the elderly.

StandTragaluzEditores

XXI BogotaInternationalBook Fair2008

In 2008, a small editorial group from Medellín would participate, on their own for the first time, in one of Colombia’s most important cultural events. Tragaluz Editores’ books were already famed and award winning on a national scale for their unique crafted character, which demanded the space to highlight each one as a true museum piece. Visually crude materials like oriented strand board (OSB) and cardboard, virtual enclosures, punctual lighting and an exceptional graphic work turned these 16m² into a memorable space.graphic work turned these 16m² into a memorable space.

Project was developed along with architect Pablo Lara and the editorial’s team, which produced the illustrations and graphic pieces for the stand.

Spatial dimensions, along with storage and display needs, dictated the irregular layout which could dissolve the limits between the inside and the outside.

Separating attention and display areas, along with the angled panel enclosure, successfully recreated a sort of museum gallery.

After only two years of existence, the books of Tragaluz Editores were already a key piece in the national editorial scene. Their distributodistributor, Mexican powerhouse “Fondo de Cultura Economica”, offered the label an opportunity to have their own display module in their latest project, Centro Cultural Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The module, inspired in the book as object, presents three panels of variable width with small exhibition tabs and a lateral grid for book storage, simulating the spine of a big volume.

The project was a design challenge to the extent that the result should perform both a display and a storage function in reduced dimensions. Placement inside the building was unknown and formal language should be subtle to light while connecting with the whole store. Blueprints were sent, the module was approved and it’s being used to date.

Exhibition tabs were laid out following the grid pattern, keeping visual coherence. The logo merges with the scheme, located in the top of the first panel.

KoyomadS.A.bags

Contest2008

The series is composed of two basic designs, one for beef and one for pork. Different patterns for the weave and multiple colors were proposed, to achieve maximum variety.

On the front we have the logo, the cut chart and a commemorative slogan. On the back the silhouettes from every derived cut can be found, with their respective name.

The hand-drawn silhouettes give each bag an artistic and fun touch, encouraging the user to utilize it on daily routine activities.

Proposal for the contest “Design for a bag based on 100% recycled polypropylene fabric” conducted by Koyomad S.A. and EAFIT’s ICIPC. The concept, based on meat cut chart posters from butchers, seeks to leave behind the conception of the bag as a purely functional or advertising object, to become an artistic and educational article that enriches user experience. The idea is to transgress the concept of the bag so that it becomes a shopping guide and gastronomic manual. manual.
