Introduction / Agenda
• Customers worldwide have adopted Ultrasonic flow measurement for Custody Transfer Gas Measurement
• Multi Path technology with generally either 100% Chordal or 100% Reflective paths configuration provides the best achievable calibrated accuracy… Both have Pros and Cons.
• Even if fiscal metering & dirty gas doesn’t go together well, the reality in the field is different.
• During operation, uncertainties due to process change, possible contamination, liquid & wet gas can be an issue.
• Emerson Daniel has 25 years of experience with both Chordal & Reflective technology and believe combination of best of both worlds can help
– To increase the confidence level of the US meter
– To get early warnings in case of process related issues of these operational uncertainties.
Agenda :
1. Chordal /Reflective comparison : Theorical & Applicative approach
2. Field cases in North America of combination of both technologies

• Less path configuration, lower accuracy
– Center line, No Weighting
• More sensitive to flow disturbance
– Effect on velocity for non developped flow profile / Error on CF
• In case of contamination / corrosion
– Path lengths change
– Pipe Roughness change Flow profiles become more pointed = Influence in CF
– Depending on build up, signal dispersed
• In case of wet gas / liquid
– Signal Attenuation / Path Lengths change / Deviated bounce (wave)
– Risk for liquid covering target bounce area
• Longer installation requirement

Reflective Paths
Emerson Daniel Chordal Vs Reflective / Applications
• Multi path design, best accuracy
• Less sensitive to flow disturbance
• In case of contamination / corrosion
– No effect on path lengths (except if contamination on transducer itself)
– Doesn’t affect the SOS & velocity measurement
– Overeading in Q caused by contamination
• In case of wet gas
– No effect on path lengths
– More Gain
• Reduced installation requirement

Emerson Daniel Chordal Vs Reflective / Diagnostics
• Multiple paths then multiple diagnostics
• Basic Functional diagnostics
SOS / Gain / Performance / SNR
• Advanced Dynamic Flow Based diagnostics

Symmetry / Cross flow / Swirl
• 1 or 2 paths, less diagnostics
• Only Functional Diagnostics

Field case : Gas Pipeline Company in NA
• Big number of metering stations equiped with several metering lines since more than 15 years
• Size 6’’ to 12’’
• Unidirectional or bidirectional metering installations
• Remote site, takes few hours to get in the metering stations

Typical applications / Combination of Junior & Senior
• All metering stations is a combination of a primary meter Senior & Check meter Junior sonic.
• Alarm if >1% deviation between 2 meters over 24h
• Typical customer issue for gas measurement
– Shale gas / sludge => no consistant
– Operational Issues during production
– Grease from valve, components.
– Construction debris
• Purpose of the combined installation
– Check the integrity of their Fiscal Measurement
– Early warnings of process change
– Part of quality standard
– Meet stringent local regulations
– Intervention program (extend calibration period)

magnitude of shift
between the two meters
which they take into
account when doing
maintenance or shutdown
planning. Large error,
means immediate action.
Small shifts first mean
going through logs rather
than a shutdown.

Conclusion
• We have seen that both Chordal or Reflective paths configuration have Pros and Cons.
• Combining them in a smart way provides added value :
– Detection of liquid / build up / contamination / blockage
– Easy to understand on line comparison versus “complex” diagnostics
• Daniel has combined these 2 contradictive technologies in a single meter body to enable wider usage of this method.
• Without compromising robust fiscal measurement, sensitivity has been added to detect metrological relevant process issues.
• Please come to our booth to discover these added values in a single gas meter.
