Where Are Volcanoes Typically Located?

Volcanoes are located a lot of different places. Many times they are on edges of continents because of plate tectonics. Volcanoes are located where the earth’s plates meet. They also are located in hotspots like Hawaii and Japan. You can also find them on the ocean floor. The Pacific ring of fire is a place on the basin of the pacific where many volcanic eruptions happen.

Why do Volcanoes Erupt?

• Imagine a volcano as if it were a soda can. If it has gas and steam in it when you pop the tab it will expand and….BOOM!

Page 4: Dangerous Volcanoes

What Comes Out Of Volcanoes?

• Volcanoes erupt with lava/magma which is molten rock and is very hot but moves somewhat slowly. It also explodes with gas and pyroclasts (rock fragments). Everything that comes out of a volcano is at an extreme temperature because it is from deeper down in the ground and it’s hot down there!

Page 5: Dangerous Volcanoes

How Often do Volcanoes Erupt?

• Volcanoes erupt whenever they need to release stress. The volcano has gas and lava building up in side of it like a soda can after be shaken.

What Happens When a Volcano Erupts?

• Normally, when a volcano erupts it explodes with lava and gas that can be very deadly. Volcanoes leave very, very big damage such as mudslides, tearing houses apart, and much more. They leave damage

How are Volcanoes Measured?

• Volcanoes are measured on a scale from 0-8. 0-1 volcanic eruptions happen often and are not big deals. 2-4 eruptions happen about 1 time every year. 5 volcanoes are more rare and happen about every 10 years, give or take a few. 6 volcanoes only happen about once every 100 years! 7s happen every 1000 years! 8 volcanic eruptions happen almost every 1,000,000 years and are the most rare.

Page 8: Dangerous Volcanoes

Are There Any After Effects?

• Damage from a volcano includes mud/landslides, lava flow, and layers of ash.

What Structures and Features are Involved with Volcanoes?

• Mountain Ranges are features that are involved with volcanoes. Hotspots are also involved with volcanoes, hotspots are places like Hawaii. These are where tectonic plates meet.

Volcano Words

• Magma/Lava- Molten rock• Ash Fall- A cloud of ash from a volcanic eruption• Tectonic Plates- the plates inside the earth that meet and

make volcanoes• Volcano- Basically, a big mountain with a hole at the top

and connects to an underground chamber of lava• Chamber- The place under a volcano that holds the lava
