‘Dancing the Javanaise’, the Lisa E Moss for Twenty8Twelve Autumn/Winter 2011 collection looks towards beat culture, French beatniks and the imagery of the French New Wave Cinema movement of the 60s – the films of Jean-Luc Godard in particular – to set the scene. The style of French tabac culture and Serge Gainsbourg lend a smoky air and a cocky swagger to the pieces, and our title is taken from Gainsbourg’s song of the same name.
The collection is also reminiscent of the fashion and ideals of the post-war Teddy Girls and their scuffed up Edwardian-inspired style – black silk bows and cameos – and a touch of rockabilly attitude gives a tomboy charm. Each piece of jewellery tells a story and many are detailed with elements influenced by André Breton and his fellow surrealist artists and poets – capturing the dream-like imagery of the beatnik epoch.
The palette is subdued – muted organic tones, blackened silvers and burnished golds – reflecting the iconography of the 50s and 60s.
