Akhilesh.Singh@timesgroup.com New Delhi: Samajwadi Party adopted a cautious approach towards Aditya Nath Yogi taking charge as Uttar Pra- desh CM, with senior party member Ram Gopal Yadav saying he respected the CM’s saffron robes and felt he should be given at least six months be- fore his record in office was judged. “One should not raise questions about a chief minister barely a day af- ter he takes charge. I will not speak a single word against him for six months,” said the Samajwadi Party general secretary, seen to be close to former CM Akhilesh Yadav. The careful articulation is at odds with SP’s usual efforts to reach out to minority voters. Though the party had avoided going over the top in its minor- ity pitch during the campaign in UP, it has not held back in claiming to be the protector of Muslim interests. Mu- layam Singh Yadav frequently recalls how he, as chief minister, ordered po- lice firing on karsewaks at Ayodhya. “The robe (saffron) he wears is sa- cred. We all respect his robe, and I person- ally respect it,” Yadav said while speak- ing to the media in Parliament. However, he urged the new chief minister to restrain his supporters, who he said were issuing threats that smacked of vendetta. “He (Yogi) will now realise how difficult it is to run a vast state like UP smoothly,” Yadav said. Give Yogi 6 mths before judging him: Ram Gopal C ongress said on Monday that party’s central leadership will review its performance in the assembly polls and introspect on reasons for the party's defeat in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. For the past 35 years, the man who has super- vised all construction work inside the Gorakhnath temple is a Muslim, Yasin Ansari, who also keeps an account of the temple’s expenditure. Speaking to TOI, Ansari said, “I have very cordial rela- tion with Chhote Maharaj (as Yogi is referred to in the monas- tery). Whenever he’s here, he calls me and takes all informa- tion about work. I move freely in his living quarters, from the kitchen to his bedroom, and al- so take my meals with him.” A number of shops in the temple precincts are run by Muslims. Said Ansari, “I have seen him help the poor irre- spective of their religion or caste. Maharaj always partic- ipates in my family marriage functions.” “For the last 35 years, I’ve been running a shop at the temple. I’ve never felt any dis- respect or discrimination on the part of Yogiji. He’s a real saint,” said Azizunnisa. “There are any more Mus- lim families inside the temple who earn and live fearlessly,” said Mohammad Mutaqim, who has been running a ban- gle shop in the temple for the last 20 years. Yasin said that his father’s elder brother had come to the temple during the priesthood of Mahant Digvijaynath, and the temple kitchen was his re- sponsibility. “My mother-in- law, Hamida Begum, was su- pervisor of the kitchen and my father-in-law was a gar- dener. I was the temple cashier from 1977-83. Since 1984, I’ve been the temple’s construc- tion supervisor,” said Ansari. The first engineer of Go- rakhnath temple was Nisar Ahmad. He later became the principal of Maharana Pratap Polytechnic. He told TOI, “I was the engineer at the tem- ple. Now, I have retired.” Yogi loves cows and there are 400 bovines in the temple — and their chief caretaker is Maan Mohammad. “Earlier, my father took care of the cows. Now I’m doing the work. I wake up at 3am, milk the cows and give them fodder. Chhote Maharaj takes care of all us,” said Mohammed. The Yogi lives a frugal, aus- tere life in his quarters on the first floor of the shrine. Though UP’s move could see similar demands from oth- er states, the Centre does not appear keen on making any commitment at this juncture. However, it is learnt that other states will be free to take a deci- sion on giving farmers inter- est-free short-term loans under special circumstances. Under interest subvention scheme, farmers get short- term crop loans of up to Rs 3 lakh for one year at an interest rate of 7%. An incentive of 3% per annum is, however, provid- ed by the Centre to farmers for prompt repayment of loans within due date. So, these farmers in effect avail short term crop loans at an interest rate of 4% per an- num. “If any state desires, it can extend the incentive of 4% to farmers for prompt repay- ment — making it possible to provide them interest free loan”, said an official. Farm loan waiver of small and marginal farmers (land- holdings of up to two hectares) will cost Uttar Pradesh govern- ment nearly Rs 36,000 crore if it takes a call to waive loans taken from all cooperative as well as scheduled commercial banks. The total loan amount for farmers in Uttar Pradesh is of the order of Rs 8,400 crore from cooperative banks and pri- mary agriculture cooperative societies, and Rs 27,419 crore from commercial banks. “It won’t be a financially prudent move to take a similar call for all states, taking into ac- count the huge crop loan amount in the country”, said an official in agriculture min- istry, adding UP’s decision will open a Pandora’s box. He said, “Maharashtra has, however, already resisted simi- lar demand of loan waiver. The state, in fact, prefers to allocate money in its budget for creat- ing agriculture infrastructure, including irrigation facilities. This kind of approach should be emulated by other states”. A mega loan waiver scheme in the country was implement- ed in 2008 when the then UPA government had initially an- nounced a waiver of Rs 60,000- crore loan for small and mar- ginal farmers in the Budget. It was later extended to large farmers as well and the amount increased to Rs 71,600 crore. Agrawal’s comments came even as the opposition targeted the government over demonetisation, farm distress and rising non-per- forming assets (NPAs) during a dis- cussion on the Budget. “I want to congratulate Modiji.
