DANCE COLLECTIONS 1996
ACADEMY OF THE ARTS - DANCE
Welcome to Dance Collections '96, a performance season by students of the Associate Degree in Dance and Bachelor of Arts (Dance) performance majors. This evening we feature students in Ballet, Contemporary
Dance and Folk Dance styles. Highlights include the reworking of Natalie Weir's NARCISSUS performed in the 1995 graduation season; Harold Collins' lyrical and technically-demanding STRANGE PILGRIMS
last performed in the 1994 graduation season; and Head of Dance Associate Professor Susan Street's GAUDETTE which premiered in the 1992 dance graduation season. These three works from the Academy's now extensive dance repertoire were recently performed by the QUT dance students in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Following this Dance Collections season, the students will perform NARCISSUS at the Merlyn Theatre, CUB Malthouse, Melboume along with other national and intemational tertiary dance institutions, as part
of a gala performance for the 1996 Greenmill Dance Conference.
To complete this program, dance lecturer John Utans has created a new contemporary dance work for first year performing students, and Dianna Laska-Moore has reproduced the lively North American clogging
dance, TAKE YOUR PARTNERS . We hope you enjoy the performance.

big & LITFLE "What's this thing, 'big & LITTLE, about anyway?" she asked with a gleam in her eye. "What's the story?" "We//, there is not really a story as such, "he replied with a sigh. "'t 's about the bing things and the little things that might happen to us everyday. Some things that appear to be overwhelmingly big are really quite small. And vice versa . Some times we can look over the small things and forget that they exist and how important they can be. " "Like forgetting to read the /ine print, " she responded. "Yeah. It's also about the time we spend or don't spend looking at things. And contrasts /ike up and down, black and white, /ast and slow. Small things that can mean a lot and big things that mean nothing. ft.'s about one voice that can fill an entire room." He paused /or a breath. "Happy things and sad things, and the times when .... " "I thought it could have been a story about a couple o/ /ish call Inga and Sven, "she interrupted, fully understanding what he was saying, but wanting to pull his leg a /itt/e. "We//, it 's about that too ... , "he continued.

Dance at the Academy
Dance is a universal activity and form of expression. Dance studies at the Academy of the Arts balance technique training with relevant academic rigour.
Academy dance graduates are articulate advocates of dance with skills to succeed in and shape the dance industry of this country. Graduates have danced with most major Australian companies, and made their mark intemationally with companies including the Basel Ballet (Switzerland), London City Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Rambert Dance Co (London), Netherlands Dance Theatre and Siobhan Davies Company (London).
In fact, this is now the most popular tertiary-level dance training ground in the country with more than 300 aspiring dance professionals from all over Australia and New Zealand applying for 35 positions each year.
Professional Links - Dance Staff and Guest Artists Dance courses at QUT are strengthened by the experienced teaching team who between them have
more than 80 years of professional performance experience with dance companies throughout the world including: The Royal Opera Ballet (London); The Lido (Paris); The Royal Winnipeg Ballet; The Norwegian National Ballet; The Finnish National Ballet; Ballet de Marseille; Dancehouse (London); Intemational Folkloric Dance Theatre (Amsterdam); Kolobok Dance Company; London Festival Ballet; Pact Ballet (South Africa); Royal Swedish Ballet; Tanz Forum (Cologne); The Queensland Ballet and more.
The courses are pinned to contemporary standards with valued input from prominent guest national and intemational teachers/choreographers. Recent guests include: Ashley Killar, artistic director, Royal New Zealand Ballet; Arlette Weinreich, Royal Danish Ballet; Natalie Weir, freelance choreographer; Harold Collins, artistic director, The Queensland Ballet; Leigh Warren, artistic director, Leigh Warren and Dancers; Maggi Sietsma, artistic director, Expressions Dance Co., and John Meehan, freelance teacher/ choreographer.
Course Aims and Career Opportunities The Bachelor of Arts (Dance) aims to produce graduates capable of providing artistic leadership and
initiating the community development necessary to reinforce their art form in contemporary Australian society. Graduates of the BA work in numerous areas of dance including: performance, freelance choreography, dance research and administration.
The Bachelor of Arts (Dance)/Bachelor of Education is a double degree conducted jointly by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education. The course is designed to prepare students for a career in secondary teaching with a specialisation in dance.
The Associate Degree in Dance (ADD) is designed to prepare dancers for a performance career, with graduates working in diverse fields of ballet companies, contemporary dance companies, dance education groups, choreography, private dance studio tutoring and mainstream theatrical productions.
Bachelor of Arts (Dance) (QTAC Course Code: 421112) The BA (Dance) is a three year full-time course covering both the practical and theoretical aspects of
the art form. The academic content is rigorous and will enable successful graduates to enrol in postgraduate courses should they wish to do so.
In the first two years of the course, all students undertake a number of core units which bring them into contact with a broad range of other students in the Faculty of Arts and enrich the leaming environment. All students study ballet and contemporary technique with the option to take classes in
jazz, tap, folk and musical theatre. Composition, music and some basic kinesiology and alignment are compulsory studies as are dance analysis, history and dance in the community.
A flexible range of electives is open to students after their first year where they can choose from more detaJed dance studies or undertake units from other Academy disciplines or from elsewhere in the university. Students may specialise in performance, composition, community work, or take a track which will lead to an Honours Degree in fourth year; depending on their achievements in the above areas.
Bachelor of Arts (Dance)/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) (QTAC Course Code: 429162) Graduates of this double degree have the benefits of both an extensive study of dance, and two years
of pre-service teacher education. Students are required to undertake studies in a second teaching area,
chosen from a list of offerings in the humanities, to increase their employabJity in the Queensland
Education system. In the first two years of the course all students undertake a number of core units which bring them
into contact with a broad range of other students in the Faculty of Arts and enrich the learning
environment. Education in the technique and phJosophy of a number of dance styles is provided, as well as dance
analysis, history and sociology. All students study dance composition with some basic kinesiology and alignment. The concepts and practices of dance education are a particular focus.
In the second part of the double degree program, the students concentrate on teaching preparation, with dance curriculum units designed to equip students with the skills necessary for effective dance
educators.
Associate Degree in Dance (QTAC Course Code: 421102) The ADD is a two year full-time course preparing students for a professional career as a performer.
This specialist course has a quota of only 17 places which ensures outstanding rates of employment for
graduates of the course. The main area of study is technique in both ballet and contemporary dance. Contemporary studies
include folk, tap, character, jazz and musical theatre. Students also study kinesiology, music for dance,
composition, history, stagecraft and professional studies which prepares students for their careers in the dance industry. The focus is on practical studies culminating in public performance at the end of each semester. The emphasis is on training dancers for a performance career in professional Australian dance
companies.
