They will learn about how important recycling is, so we will use old recyclable magazines to collage a globe of the earth (which we are saving one step at a time by recycling). We will also touch base on the seven continents of the world, in addition to important historical monuments and architecture so the students know where these are located. PA Standards: 9.1.3. A. Education Connections:Science: of recyclingGeography: collaging a global map, and learning about where historical monuments are locatedHistory: learning about historical monuments and their importance in the world

Procedure: Day 1

1. Students will watch a Power Point on collaging and color; while also incorporating recycling, geography and historical monuments.

2. Students will take a magazine and begin to cut out pieces with either green or blue and their desired background color

3. They will place their cut up magazine pieces in a zip lock bag with their name on itDay 2

4. Students will take the print out of the world globe and scribble very darkly onto the back5. They will then place their print out onto the white paper and trace the circle shape of the

globe and the shape of the counties in a dark fashion. This is a new way to teach the students how to trace.

6. They will then continue to cut out magazine pages.7. Once the students feel like they have a sufficient amount they will start to paste the blue

OR green (choosing one because the colors are too similar that when collaged they blend together too easily) onto the water or land parts of the globe.

8. They will also begin to paste their desired color onto the background. Students will be instructed to NOT change their color half way through.

Day 39. Students will continue to collage on their magazine cut out pieces to the areas of the globe

and the background.Day 4

10. Students will continue to collageDay 5

11. Students will continue to collage12. Students will take the printed out images of historical monuments on their tables and

choose at least three historical monuments to draw and then collage onto their background.

13. Lastly, students will draw their face (a star, a P, a Pirates, penguins, steelers symbol, etc.) and place it on the Pittsburgh area so students know where they are on the map

Closure: I will review with students what we have accomplished by creating artwork out of old magazines that were almost thrown away. We will also review their chosen drawings and where they are located on the map. Students will take home the map printouts so they can have them at

their disposal to review whenever necessary. Students will tell me what they have learned about recycling. We will review the geography of the world, where certain monuments are located and their importance, and how to collage.

Assessment: Class participation Following directions Creativity Overall skill/ project result

Modifications: Time extension Using additional construction paper or computer print outs instead of magazine paper Assistance in drawing the historical monuments Students finishing early can continue to draw more monuments to collage onto their

background
