DISD Receives $4,000 Safety Grant

Page 2

Students in grades K-2 journey to Gal-

veston on Tuesday, April 29 to visit the

sea turtles. Students were given a first

hand look at sea turtles along with in-

teresting facts. Stu-

dents ended the trip

with a picnic lunch

on the Galveston Sea

Wall.

K-2 Visit Sea Turtles in Galveston

For the fifth year in a row, Damon ISD received a $4,000 safety

grant. Mr. Chuck Kennedy presented a check to Mrs. Spearow

and Mr. Haley on April 29, 2008. This money will go toward pur-

chasing an additional security camera for the computer lab and

for the purchase and installation of a new panic door for the

back of the gym. In years past, the safety grant has gone to-

ward purchasing the protective fence around the electric poles

in front of the school, a high-

rise ladder for the gym so we

can fix windows, change

lights, and maintain the AC

units, and most recently, we

have used the $4000 for in-

stallation of our security

camera system. Thanks Mrs.

Spearow and Mr. Haley for all

the work that went into writ-

The 2008 PTA Spring Fling was a huge success and the PTA thanks every-

one for everything that they did to make it successful. The evening was

filled with fun activities including games, a talent show, band concert,

dancing, auction, raffle, and delicious barbecue meal.

Spring Fling Huge Success

Damon ISD’s Student Council sponsored a night

out for its junior high students. Those in atten-

dance enjoyed playing games, eating pizza, and

watching a movie. The

night was a big hit

among students in

grades 5-8. Student

Council members in-

clude Britney Kasmir,

Chance Schneider,

Dusty Mikel, Dillon

Jones, Marissa Buchta,

Brenna Helton, and Katiana Chapa. They are

sponsored by Mrs. Jones. More events like this

will be planned for the future.

Celebrating Pi Day

Page 4 Damon ISD School News

On 3-14, students and staff celebrated National Pi Day. In case you did-

n’t know, Pi or ̟ is one of the most important mathematical constants,

approximately equal to 3.14159. It represents the ratio of any circle's

circumference to its diameter in Euclidean geometry, which is the same

as the ratio of a circle's area to the square of its radius. Many formulas

from mathematics, science, and engineering involve ̟. Students started

the day reading a story together centered around a math concept. Indi-

vidual classes held contests such as drawing the perfect circle, brain-

storming items that are circles, and playing circle games. Individual

winners received medals and a book donated to the library in their

honor. Students in PK-2nd grade formed a paper chain symbolizing the

digits of pi while students in 3rd-5th grade made large bar graphs to

show the frequency of the first 100 digits of pi. Students in 6th-8th

grade enjoyed a door decorating contest celebrating the marvels of pi.

The day ended with lucky winners being selected to throw a “pi” at Mr.

Haley and Coach Abbe! Hats off to Mrs. Matejka for planning this fun

filled, educational day!

Twenty-three to twenty—-that was the final score as

the Damon ISD Staff took on the Damon 8th grade

class. The special game was organized by Coach Abbe

and an enjoyable time was had by everyone in atten-

dance. By the scoreboard, of course the staff finished

on top, but in truth, everyone was a winner.

To help defray the cost of starting up a band,

the Damon ISD Band Boosters donated $2,000

to the band program. This money will help pay

for band supplies, instruments, tuner, contest

etc. Pictured at the right is Mr. Sanders and

some of the members of the Damon ISD Band.

The Band Boosters will be selling pizzas on

May 16th to help raise additional funds for the

band program.

Mrs. Matejka and Coach Abbe, track

coaches, made a deal with their track

teams—-you bring home the medals,

we will let you color our hair purple!

Guess what! They did it! The DISD

track team brought home 9 medals

from the district track meet! True to

their word, both coaches allowed

their team to color their hair purple!

Congratulations track members and

coaches on an excellent performance!
