Damen’s focus on standardisation is undoubtedly one of our fundamentalcorporate values. In 1969, Jan Damen handed the reins over to his son Kommer Damen. The modular building concept was one of the first initiatives Kommer Damen introduced after listening carefully to client feedback.

Back then, the standardisation technique was totally new in the shipbuilding industry and even today it is unique. In each of our niche markets – from Tugs to Combi Freighters – Damen has developed a standard range.However, although these vessels are based on a standard design, they can be equipped with a large range of options to meet specific customer requirements. We can also start from scratch to design you an unique vessel. Either option is no problem with Damen’s far-reaching capabilities.

Damen’s standardisation policy allows us to reduce delivery times substantially.

The modern accommodation with a low noise profile includes cabins with private sanitary facilities. The wheelhouse includes a cargo control desk, with an optimised view in all directions for navigation and cargo operations.

The vessel is equipped with high quality components. It includes preparations for a ballast water treatment system and an OCIMF compliant cargo manifold arrangement. This features a super stripping system and superb manoeuvring courtesy of two azimuth thrusters and a high efficiency, low draft three channel bow thruster.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENTINNOVATIONS

Damen’s extensive Research & Development department represents a powerful force, especially when combined with the Dutch maritime technology cluster. All Damen vessels benefit from thorough Research & Development from their initial design, throughout their entire lifecycle. Our team is continuously improving our vessels, making them faster, quieter, more cost-efficient and more environmentally friendly. Many years of research have also led to some truly pioneering designs such as the Sea Axe and the ACES.

All Damen vessels benefit from knowledge gathered during ongoing research programmes within the group. Damen works alongside world-renowned research institutes such as Delft University of Technology, Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) and the Netherlands Organisation of Applied Scientific Research (TNO), as well as other reputed universities and leading maritime companies.

All Damen cargo vessels have been developed with built-in LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fuel tanks. Built-in tanks result in better stability and safety for crew and environment. Special ventilation and gas detection has been installed to avoid risk in case of leakage.

Profitability by styling. Ongoing improvement of bow designs in order to save resistance and safe fuel consumption.

With extensive CFD analysis, the ship configurations are further optimised for reduction of fuel consumption and fine-tuned to the specific operational needs. CFD analyses result in better predictions of vessels’ characteristics and performance.

WIND ASSISTED PROPULSION

IMPROVING BOW DESIGN

In 2015 we launched a partnership with the Bellona Foundation with the goal of exploring and developing concept vessels for the future. Every tonne of fuel saved translates to a reduction of emissions.

Research on wind assisted propulsion to reduce fuel comsuptions and CO² emissions.

BALLAST WATER TREATMENT SYSTEM

THROUGH THE ENTIRE LIFECYCLESUSTAINABILITY

The unique InvaSave technology is based on continuous fine filtration combined with UltraViolet treatment. Sludge and sediment is dewatered and compacted in a secondary treatment so it can be further processed safely ashore. Treated water meets the ballast water performance standard specified in Regulation D-2 of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention as an absolute minimum. InvaSave is the only technology on the market today to treat ballast water at discharge in only one step.

The maritime industry recognises the increasing urge for environmental awareness. Damen is proactive in developing sustainable and cost-effective vessels and services.Damen’s Research & Development department is looking into sustainability issues, both in terms of manufacturing processes and of product improvements.
