What can you ACTUALLY do after you leave school/college?

One (or more) of the following until you’re 18:

• Stay in full-time education• Start an apprenticeship • Voluntary work

None of these options are ‘better’ than the other. It all depends on the individual – your specific skills, career goals, learning preferences and circumstances.

So, what IS an apprenticeship?

• What is an apprenticeship? • How long will it take?• What will I learn?• How much work will I have to do?• So, I will get paid?• What qualification will I get?

Apprenticeships vs. higher educationApprenticeships Higher education (university)

Apprenticeships are free to do = no student debt! The cost of university in England currently stands at £9000 a year (minimum three years). This doesn’t include living and accommodation costs.

Salaried job (but usually less than the NMW at the start). Less free time: full-time job. Miss out on ‘the student experience’ but have head-start to working life

Don’t earn a full-time salary. Usually more free time as some courses require a few hours of teaching per week. Greater contact with people of your own age = better social life?

Qualification and a job. Just a qualification.

Can apply any time and start any time. There are set times you can apply and you usually start in September.

Opportunity to progress through the levels and grow in a role.

Progressing to a masters degree and PhDs can be costly.

Apprenticeships are specialised to your role and industry. Some degrees such as English aren’t targeted towards any particular job role or industry. This leads to a broader range of career options.

Is an apprenticeship SUITED to YOU?

There are a few questions to consider:

What grades will I achieve at the end of school/college?

What skills and qualities do I have?

What are my career goals?

Do I prefer more theoretical or practical learning?

The life of an apprentice: Damar case studies

Emma Dann

• Emma Dann is completing her apprenticeship in accountancy and business skills at Sedulo Group Limited, the chartered accountants in Manchester.

• After finishing school, Emma was unsure of what she wanted to do, just like most students. However, whilst attending college, she fell in love with accounting and knew that this was something she wanted to do. She didn’t like the idea of university what with having a debt to pay off at the age of 21, and moving away from home.

• Emma works in the Payroll Team at Sedulo. She carries out weekly and monthly payroll duties for clients and answers any queries.

• As part of our accountancy apprenticeships, apprentices attend classes at our offices in Stockport to learn about accounting theory. Emma enjoys having the support and guidance of our accounts training team.

Tyrone Parsonage• Tyrone Parsonage is working towards a business administration apprenticeship at Greater Manchester Police. He has now

gained full-time employment as an Operational Support Officer.• He enrolled onto the apprenticeship as it was a great opportunity to get involved in a large organisation and fulfil his ambition

of working within the emergency services. He also wanted to learn new skills and as a bonus, achieve a qualification.• At the start of his apprenticeship, Tyrone was placed as the admin apprentice for the Child Sexual Exploitation Team. He got

involved in meetings for the team and took part in conferences and training as well as dealing with the admin side for a very busy unit.

Read more about the real-life experiences of our apprentices in our case studies and apprentice diaries.

Finding an apprenticeship

• If you are interested in our apprenticeships, please register your details with us if you haven’t done so already by filling out a form. You can check out all our qualifications here and here. Please note that our computer gaming apprenticeships and apprenticeships with Greater Manchester Police open for applications at specific times of the year.

• You can apply for an apprenticeship when you’re still in school but as most apprenticeships have immediate start dates (less than a month), it’s best to start applying around a month before you are due to leave school/college.

• You can search for and apply for apprenticeships here. All our vacancies can be accessed here.

If you need more experience

• If you feel you’re not ready for an apprenticeship, a traineeship is a work experience placement designed to prepare you for one.

• Family members may also be able to arrange placements at their workplaces for you.
