Thank you to everyone who kindly donate to the flowers which beautify the sanctuary during worship.

If you would like to help in this so special outreach of love please add your name to the Flower List (on the wall outside the kitchen) or speak to Aileen Hamilton or Agnes Mann. This involves donating towards the cost of the flowers which both adorn our sanctuary and then give support to so many when delivered to

homes after the service.

By the time you read this edition of “Kirk Matters,” I ought to have been Inducted as Minister of Glasgow: Easterhouse Parish Church. After a little more than 22 years as your Minister, it is difficult for me to say farewell. But, I do so very confident that the Lord has good things planned for your future, as you continue to trust Him. In an early newsletter of the newly-formed congregation of Motherwell: Dalziel St. Andrew’s Parish Church, I wrote about how the words CHALLENGE and CHANGE are interrelated, even down to sharing most of the same letters! All these years later, I still believe that. In my time with you, most have been happy to embrace the changes we have made in the way we worship, fellowship, and serve Christ. That has been a great blessing to me, and, I believe, to you also. Together, we have built upon the foundation that was laid by previous generations of God’s people in Motherwell. In the same way, now that you enter upon vacancy, you must continue to strive to move forward, and to allow the Lord to lead you into what He has prepared for you as individuals, and as a church family. As you seek a new minister to work with you in that next phase of congregational life, please be prayerful. And, do attend carefully to the needs of those around you. Don’t spend too much time looking back over your shoulder. But, go forward in faith. To those first disciples, whom He called, Jesus said, “Come, follow me.” It is clear that he has not changed His mind, His approach, or His words. Marching boldly into the future is what Christian people do. So, as you hear the Master’s voice – listen, learn, trust, and follow.

On a personal note, I would just like to add a warm “Thank you” to the very many people (inside the congregation, and in the wider community) who have, through personal messages in cards and letters, texts and emails, as well as face to face encounters, spoken (or sung) a blessing over Elizabeth and myself. It is impossible to express in words what all of this has meant to us. This is coupled with our gratefulness for very generous gifts, which have come our way from the Kirk Session, the congregation as a whole, and from individuals in personal ways. We pray that a blessed future awaits all of you. And, if you do wish to keep in touch, then please be aware that Helen Lawson has our contact details.

From the Manse...

Since our last newsletter we have met in September and October when a number of items were discussed. Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a methodology for the sustainable development of communities based on their strengths and potentials. We have a small group of Elders set up to look into this and Linda Irvine reported back from the meetings they have so far held. ABCD is a helpful mechanism for going forward and Linda advised that those involved with it would require training. There is the potential to involve other local churches and possibly get funding for any training involved. It is important that members of the congregation, not necessarily Elders, become involved to help take this initiative forward.

At the September meeting of Hamilton Presbytery, the Rev. Kevin Mackenzie, Minister at Westwood Parish Church, East Kilbride was duly elected as Moderator for the session 2018-2019.

At the October meeting Derek introduced Revd. Gavin Black, convenor of the Presbytery Vacancy Matters Committee and Revd. Agnes Fuller, a member of that committee who advised us of the upcoming procedures that require to be followed during the time of vacancy. It is anticipated that Derek’s last Sunday with us would be 18th November and a provisional date for his induction at Easterhouse Parish Church is Thursday 29th November. At this time a decision has not been reached on who our Interim Moderator will be.

It was noted that 249 cards were handed in at the services of Holy Communion held on Sunday 7th October. The Session Clerk thanked those Elders who prepared and served the Elements, and stayed to clear up, and also Irene Struthers and Mary Dick who dress the Sanctuary for Communion.

At the end of the October meeting, the Session Clerk paid tribute to Derek and thanked him for his 22 years as Moderator of the Kirk Session during which time he lead us with great strength, diligence, patience, commitment, love and never ending support to each and every one of us, and wished him well in his new charge in Easterhouse. She then presented him with a gift from the Session. At the end of the meeting we had an informal time together with refreshments.

The Session was also delighted to appoint Eric Geddes as our new Deputy Session Clerk and I look forward to sharing the duties and challenges with him in the future.

As we head in to a time of uncertainty I hope and pray that as a Church Family we support each other through the vacancy and work together to strengthen our congregation as we await God’s call coming to fruition on our new minister.

Helen Lawson Session Clerk.

Kirk SessionSoli Deo Gloria.

October saw the completion of the contract to secure the replacement of the large Feature Window located over the front door of the church. The window had deteriorated to an extent where replacement was essential and this has now been achieved thanks to most helpful financial support from The Heritage Lottery Fund; Historic Environment Scotland; The Baird Trust,; The Ferguson Bequest; and the General Trustees. The work was highly specialist with craftsmen working on the ornate stonework replacement as well as the replacement of the leaded and stained glass in the overall window. As with previous projects in our Makeover Project- Forward for Jesus, we were expertly guided by Conservation Architect Mr George Waterston of LBG Waterston of Bothwell. Alison Graham of R.C. Brown provided Quantity Surveying advice with the Contractor, Brick & Steel carrying out the work assisted by their

sub-contractors Freel and Beattie (Stonemason) and Rainbow Glass.Overall cost exceeded £100,000. We are indebted to Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Environment Scotland, The Baird Trust, The Ferguson Bequest and the General Trustees for their so helpful grant support. Thanks also to all in our own congregation who helped in any way.

Church Window Replacement

2018 required income£125,632 2018 actual income

£111,047

Last year (2017) we fell short of paying our full allocation to the wider work of the Church by £7,000, a sum which was paid in full from our income in the first months of this year.(2018)During this year (2018) the deterioration in Finances continued with the difference between Expenditure and Income for the year again in the region of £7,000, which as this year’s income was used to pay last years shortfall will result in an overall shortfall situation this year of over £14,000. Clearly a £7,000 deficit each year is unsustainable.

The Congregational Board will review all areas of expenditure to ensure only essential areas of expenditure are agreed.

Balancing our finances is essential to ensure we are permitted to call a new minister. Therefore it is critical that we all review out regular contributions and increase these where possible.

Further, if you are able, please also consider a one off donation as this would also make a significant difference to our financial situationPlease do what you can to help.

Thank youWillie Brown (Treasurer)Alex Baird (Chairman to Congregational Board) Helen Lawson (Session Clerk).

In addition to the work involved in replacing the Feature Window we have been able to secure some other much needed improvements.

The Electrical Cupboard located at the front door area has been upgraded to make it compliant with current health and safety standards in fire containment.

A much needed handrail has been added to the spiral stairway which leads from the upper floor to the vestibule.

The manse windows, doors, eaves and soffits have all been painted. We are to have the manse inspected as is normal practice when a vacancy for a new minister occurs to this is a most helpful area of work now completed.

We are very appreciative of the continued support of Douglas Graham who has kept the grounds looking great all summer and Douglas, Fred, and Fraser who continue to assist in so many ways in electrical and health and safety areas of work. As ever Rollo Brant and Colin Weir add their own multi-skills to our task force. Thank you.

Would you like to contribute a little more to the life of the Church?

We currently have a few important roles which we are looking to fill. Can you help at all?

It is so important that we continue to move forward together at this time of vacancy and we would really like to fill all of the roles as soon as possible.

We are currently looking for a;• Caretaker • Stewardship Convener; • Editor for Kirk Matters

If you think you might be able to help, or wish to know more about what is involved, please do speak to Helen Lawson (Session Clerk); Willie Brown (Treasurer); Linda Irvine (Editor, Kirk Matters) or Alex Baird (Chairman to the Congregational Board).

A huge thank you to Willie Brown for very kindly volun-teering to continue as our Treasurer for another term – thank you Willie your time and expertise is very much appreciated.

Even more Thanks!

We are very grateful to Go For It (Church of Scotland) for awarding us a STEP Grant of £5,000 to enable us to continue providing the outreach to the Deaf Community which our weekly BSL Signers and Electronic Notetakers provide. This will enable us to continue with the existing service well into the new year and allow us some more time to see if we can find a way of keeping the project going in the longer term.

Sunday School and Fusion started back in August and

have been pretty busy since starting back. The Sunday School studied Kings on their return until about the beginning of October albeit there

was a couple of all age services in September and holidays in both September & October.

Fusion were learning about Barnabus.

The Sunday School are considering changing their teaching material to the same as Fusion which should mean that the children are all learning similar stories at the same time. As a result of this each department has been doing “their own thing” for the past couple pf weeks which the children have thoroughly enjoyed.

As Christmas is not very far away, plans for the Nativity are now in place. The children have had a wee taster of what they will be doing this year and after Remembrance Sunday and the 18th November 2018 which is an all age service as it is Derek’s last day, rehearsals will start. I would urge all parents, grandparents and carers to help their child learn the songs and/or words if their child has a part in the Nativity. A big thank you goes to the leaders and helpers involved in the Nativity who always make this a success.

As the next time I write to you will be after Christmas I will take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and peaceful 2019.

Jean Stevenson Sunday School Coordinator

The Social Committee would like to thank everyone who helped to raise the sum of £734 from the Table Top Sale held on 3rd November.

We enjoyed an amazing afternoon service of worship on Sunday 16 September when a record number of Deaf Choirs took part, one having travelled from Aberdeen!

Including a Deaf Children’s Choir it was a very moving experience with the choir pieces supplemented by a most effective solo by one of the choir members.

The Festival was arranged by the Stewart Lochrie Memorial Fund with a highlight of the afternoon being the enthusiastic welcome given to the granddaughter and great granddaughter of Rev Stewart Lochrie.

The event was live streamed using our facilities in the sanctuary and the Trustees expressed their sincere thanks for the volunteer assistance of Derek for his kind introduction and welcome, Colin on the technical desk, the ladies of the Social Committee for their support in delivering the excellent buffet which was so well received by all following the service.Over 700 “hits” have been recorded on You Tube viewing the Festival. Adding on the well filled sanctuary, plus those who watched the live stream, means that over 1000 folk were able to enjoy this so special occasion!

It was so very heartening to see the good number of our own congregation who came along to share in this so special worship experience. We look forward to welcoming the Festival back to our sanctuary at some time in the future.

The GuildGuildThe new session of the Guild is now well under way with quite a number of new members. The change of time has been successful as we now meet at 2pm on Tuesday afternoon. At our first meeting we had a talk from our minister Rev Derek Hughes who spoke

about his move to Easterhouse. The Guild theme for this year is “Seeking the way” so Dereks talk was very appropriate. We have had speakers from Glasgow Hospitals Children Charity, and a talk on Alan Cuthbertson’s expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro. We look forward to hearing the story of Harris tweed and an afternoon tea for St Andrews Day with entertainment by Eric Geddes and friends. We would welcome new members to any of our meetings.

Janette Moffat Secretary

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” Mark 16 verse 15

For several years now we have been live streaming our weekly services on the internet allowing those unable to come to the sanctuary to share in our worship.

We have been analyzing the numbers who both watch the live stream and also those who are unable to worship at 11.00am on Sunday but take the opportunity to catch-up on You Tube. We have also had a look at the statistics for those who join us live each Sunday on our Deaf Stream and again those who catch-up on You Tube.

Taking the first 6 months of this year the figures make great reading.• January to June: “Hits” on the live stream on a Sunday = 2684• Number of “hits” on You Tube for the same time period = 2711• Number of “hits” on the live “deaf” stream = 170• Number of “hits” on You Tube “deaf catch-up” = 859• Total number of “hits” = 6424 Average each Sunday =247.

Please note that each “hit” may well involve more than one person in the room viewing. We know of couples who are unable to come to church but share in worship together. The weekly online “audience” will certainly be around 300!

A wonderful outreach to think that we double our congregation each week by this effort in His name. Our God is So Good! Thank you to all who support our internet ministry.

Another wonderful legacy which Derek has left for us to build upon.

Colin Weir and Alex Baird

How many people join us in worship via the internet?

As we have entered, what will probably be, a lengthy period of time before we have a new Minister a question to be considered may be – ‘Is it time for everyone to give extra of their time, talents and money to ensure all that we currently do continues and that we are able to undertake new opportunities?’

If we ask ourself - “What is my Role?” the extra involvement, commitment and finance can be put to good use for our Lord’s purpose.

There are various opprotunities for everyone to get more involved in our church’s life and ensuring that we continue to move forward for God in the coming months and years.

If you can give that we bit extra Helen Lawson or Alex Baird would like to hear from you.

What is your role?

Page 8: Dalziel St. Andrew’s Parish Church · Dalziel St. Andrew’s Parish Church December 2018 - February 2019 Kirk ... those first disciples, whom He called, Jesus said, “Come, follow

Since we started in September, we have been very busy.A new programme was introduced in July this year. We are still working with the old programme for this year. The new programme officially begins in September 2019. All the new

books and packs re this new work has been issued early so that we can become familiar with it and are ready to start next year. We are

working between both programmes at present. All work on the old programme will be finished by June 2019.

In September five girls left us and moved to the Guides. Since then we have welcomed 6 new girls (2 from the Rainbows and 4 others – some new to Brownies and some joined us from other packs). As with all girls when they join us they start work on their Promise and this culminates in a Promise Evening. We held this on 22 October and welcomed the parents of the girls making their Promise that night. We also planted some flowers in the tubs outside the church that night and some of the girl’s brothers and sisters helped with this too. Everyone enjoyed this.We have also welcomed another guider. Angela Morrow has agreed to become a more permanent member of our

team. She also made her promise at the same time as the Brownies. Welcome to our team Angela.

Girls who made their Promise on 22 October along with Angela (our new Guider).

In September the girls spent an overnight in the Church buildings as part of the Year of the Young People celebrations. I don’t think much sleep was had but the girls had a great time (as did all the other children taking part). I was unable to take part in this venture but a big thank you to all the leaders who did take part. Let’s hope we can build on this

in the future - maybe wish for more sleep the next time!We don’t just spend our Monday nights at the Church. We recently went to Pets at Home in Hamilton. Our guide for the night was Molly and she introduced the Brownies to some small animals (mouse, guinea pig, rat, rabbit – who was up for adoption as it was being bullied by the other rabbits – I don’t know how we got out the shop that night without finding a home for the rabbit). The rabbit’s name is Cinnamon in case anyone is interested. As you will see from the pictures Cinnamon is lovely. We held our Birthday Party last mouth. Our Brownie Pack was founded in October 1971 and we hold a birthday party each year to remember this. This year the girls chose to have a pyjama and pamper party. The Brownies came along in their pj’s and played games for part of the night (musical chairs, dookin for

apples, the mummy game – see the photos). They then took it in turn to paint their nails. The girls enjoyed it but we must apologise for the lingering smell of nail varnish remover and nail varnish in the hall afterwards! The girls have decided that instead of making a Christmas craft for themselves they will make something and leave it on the doorstep of someone they don’t know on their way home from Brownies. So, keep a look out if you live near the Church as you may find a surprise on your doorstep from one of the Brownies.

On behalf of the Brownies and their Guiders I would like to wish you all a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year.

Kirsty McMaster, Brown Owl

With Christmas fast approaching we are very busy at Befriend Motherwell. We have taken each of our befriending groups on a day trip prior Christmas to McKinnon Mills or a garden centre of their choosing. It was a brilliant way to kick of the festivities seeing all the Christmas decorations and lights. In addition, the groups have been taking part in various Christmas crafts / activities. One of our groups made these fantastic Reindeer and Santa’s filled with sweeties!!

Musical MemoriesThe 29th of November saw our last musical memories singalong of the year. We had Maggie Dee along to sign live! She was fantastic and had everyone singing along and having a laugh with her. We had a fantastic turnout with returning and new faces! Our next musical memories sing along will be Thursday the 31st of January from 1-3pm. Tea / coffee / cakes are provided. Remember its FREE!

Intergenerational ProjectOur Intergenerational Officer Laura had set up a fantastic project involving Glenview Court and children from P6 from Muir Street Primary School.

The children learned from the residents at Glenview Court games they played in their childhood such as peaver, whip an peerie and girde and cleek.

The children then shared with the resident’s games that they currently play and got a chance to play these games together.

We’ve also been joined by Luke and Ellie from Braidhurst High School on a weekly basis who have been volunteering in our Mission Place

Group.

On Wednesday the 12th of December we are holding a Christmas Lunch for our Befriendee’s and Befrienders in the church hall.

Asda Motherwell has kindly donated £500 to help towards catering costs for the event!

We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when the time comes.

I am writing to thank you and your fellowship for welcoming me so warmly yesterday. I was really encouraged by the number of folk who came and spoke to me. I can now put names to some of the folk I see on the screen! My only regret was that I didn’t meet Elizabeth. It was a joy to be in the service and I heard every word you said- without looking at the screens. I could even shut my eyes for the prayers! Truly amazing – it’s a miracle. God has been very gracious to me. Warmest wishes.
