Lack of affordable housing is not only a crisis afflicting developing nations but one shared the world over. Thisis considered one of the main contributing factors to homelessness among unaccompanied individuals. In addition to this, advances in healthcare have steadily raised the age of the population as a whole adding to the quantity of single occupant homes needed within society. Combine this with the high rate of divorce and the choice of many individuals to live alone and it becomes appar-ent that affordable single-occupant housing is of great importance. One potential solution to this can be found right within the urban areas that it may be needed most. Build infill that will create density and simultaneously renovate existing housing that is in disrepair. Within downtown Raleigh, NC, there are many sites where homes once stood. These sites make perfect candidates for small single occupant homes. Most major cities have experienced a level of deterioration of some residential neighborhoods over the last few decades due to neglect, poverty and drugs. Many of these homes have been leveled and the sites now lay dormant waiting for a new life. These areas have typically been rezoned for mixed use. The problem is that multiple individuals and companies own many of the sites and it may be difficult for one owner to unify the sites to develop a larger mixed use development. Some sites are isolated and already
surrounded by existing single family residential. Many of these neighborhoods are being renovated and some of these infill sites are too small for current typically sized single family residential. In 1900, the average square foot per person was 25. By the 1940’s, it had grown to 188 square foot. Today that number is 800 square foot per person. In the next twenty years, that number is expected to jump to 1200 square foot. The average home today is 2400 square foot. In Raleigh, NC, many homes that can be found in the neighborhoods bordering downtown were built between the turn of the 20th century and the 1950’s. Since the average square foot was much lower per person when these homes were built, many have a much smaller footprint than those found in suburban areas. Contextually, smaller infill homes would appropriately fit amongst this urban fabric rather than the larger homes that are typically built. This solution highlights and makes use of a site that in most situations would be unbuildable. Proposed is a 480 square foot single occupant residence with a budget of $30,000 that fits right at home amongst the fabric that it attempts to mend...one small fraction of land at a time. The floor plan is laid out so all spaces would easily be accessible for persons with disabilities. A small ramp can be added to the front porch if required and would have minimal effect on cost.

Australia-based investment, advisory and financial services company Macquarie Holdings’ rapid expansion required the firm to move their offices from five small, disconnected floors in a Rockefeller Center building to the top two floors at 125 West 55th Street.
STUDIOS’ design for the new space accommodates eight distinct business units while creating a single reception, conference center, and break/lounge area to encourage interaction among the different groups. A connecting stair links the conference center and reception area with a top floor employee lounge. The ceiling height was increased in the large open trading areas by exposing the unique concrete waffle slab construction of the building structure. STUDIOS implemented a flexible furniture system that allowed for efficient layout and ease of expansion.
In addition to the office space, a data center and mail copy facility were also located on a lower floor. The data center was sized to potentially serve two additional floors and a roof generator was added to provide emergency power for critical operations.
