DALLAS C.A.R.E. CLINIC OVERVIEW

The National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (NAFC), in conjunction with the Texas Association of Charitable Clinics, held a one-day free health clinic for the Dallas area’s medically underserved at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

This event transformed the convention center into the world’s largest doctor’s office for one day. Over 1,100 patients attended the clinic. Patients were able to schedule an appointment ahead of time by calling a toll-free number. Walk-ins were also seen as resources were available.

There was a wide range of services available for patients including medical exams/physicals, testing (diabetes, cholesterol, kidney, pregnancy, HIV, Kidney, urinalysis and more), 3 FREE months of medication, vision screening for adults, vision exams and glasses for children, on-site mammograms, information on local mammogram services, dermatology, mental health counseling and connection to local resources, information and health education.

The event was made possible by donors, sponsors, partners and volunteers. Over 1,000 volunteers participated in the Dallas C.A.R.E. Clinic. This included 650 non-medical volunteers and 380 medical volunteers (including over 65 medical providers).

ADDITIONAL MEDICAL SERVICESAccess to affordable specialty health care is a major issue for the medically underserved throughout the country. In addition to the general medical services available at the Dallas C.A.R.E. Clinic, there were several additional medical services available to patients that attended the clinic. These important services are often overlooked but are so crucial to a person’s overall health.

DERMATOLOGY - Thanks to Direct Relief, Unilever and the Vaseline Healing Project, patients were able to receive dermatology services as well as product give-aways.

VISION - With the participation of Essilor Vision Foundation and Prevent Blindness Texas, children that attended the clinic were able to have an eye examination and free glasses, while adults had access to eye screening and connection to free exams and glasses.

MAMMOGRAMS - On-site mammograms were available through Parkland Mammogram Unit, and patients that were unable to be receive one the day of the clinic received a free mammogram referral and additional information from the Moncrief Cancer Institute/UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Bridge Breast Network.

COLON CANCER SCREENING - Moncrief Cancer Institute/UT Southwestern Medical Center also provided referrals for free colon cancer sreening.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH - Access to behavioral health care is a major issue for so many of the medically underserved population. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of Mental Health Providers, we were able to provide this important service.

HIV TESTING - Through the participation of Aids Arms, Inc., free HIV testing was available to patients of the Dallas Clinic.

HEALTH EDUCATION CENTERThe Health Education Center is an important part of the C.A.R.E. Clinics. This is a critical area, as a major goal is to not only provide the uninsured and underserved with medical care at the event, but to connect them with the many great resources that are available to them to continue their path to good health. The following 34 organizations participated in the 2016 Dallas C.A.R.E. Clinic Health Education Center:
