Endeavours and Successes

We went for summer holidays with a heavy heart after the sad demise of two of our companions at Sunnydale. But we can only accept His plans, smile and move on and so did we.

It was refreshing to see the students back to school on July 10 after the summer holidays. I would like to send a warm welcome to all the new comers and their families who have joined us this term.

Overwhelming News - Seven of Sunnydale Scouts qualified for the prestigious President’s Scout Awards with extreme endurance and determination. Seven out of eight finalists from Sunnydale, in fact, was a little beyond the expectation.

Sunnydale Handball teams participated in Partille Cup 2018 and for this tournament flew all the way to Gothenburg, Sweden. They participated in two teams - Boys U-14 and Girls U-16. However, competing with those tough teams from the other part of the world was not a matter of joke - the mighty players - much stronger than ours in build and stamina made this tour of our team remain only a learning experience. Yet, it was still a boon for Sunnydale handball team to

compete and share experiences with the teams from around the world. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the day when Sunnydale team champions such mighty international tournaments too.

And yes, our Ordinary Level, the Advanced Subsidiary Level and the Advanced Level students have once again animated the school record of extraordinarily brilliant performance.

A subtle reminder - Sunnydale has always been and will always stand firm in its ‘no compromise’ policy for its rules and regulations. There is not going to be any amendment in its rule book for no private coaching policy by its existing teachers. Reasons and logic for our stand against this type of private coaching are already known to everybody belonging to this institution. No more debate on this issue is expected.

Come, let us carry on with our dogged determination for being and creating a better generation of informed, compassionate and successful individuals.

From the Editor’s Desk

With our deepest sorrow we had to bear with the utterly unbearable and untimely demise of our so loved companion, Shahana Alam Khan on Saturday, 5 May 2018.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un

With her sudden departure descended the pall of gloom at Sunnydale plunging us in a massive shock and utter denial. Her genteel nature and down to earth rapport with each and every one is what making this loss an unfathomable one for us. We, however, take solace in believing that she was more wanted at the heaven above.

With utmost honesty and commitment she served Sunnydale at its accounts office for 23 years joining in April 1995; her presence will always be missed as she has left the indelible mark in the history of Sunnydale.

May the Almighty give us and her family the courage to accept the reality that Shahana apa - as she was lovingly called – has taken her final leave.

Our deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers go out to her bereaved family.

Phool Mia also left us on Sunday, 6 May 2018. He served Sunnydale as a Night-Guard since December, 1996 and he had been one of our close to heart companions.

He did his job for twenty-one years and five months with utmost sincerity till the time he breathed his last.

May the Almighty grant him Jannah, Ameen.

Cultural Events at SunnydaleSunnydale makes it sure that days which are important in our Bengali calendar and showcase our culture are introduced vividly to the students at every possible occasion. The six seasons are, therefore, always welcomed in a festive manner through fairs, cultural shows or at least brief programmes at morning assemblies.

Boshonto Mela / Spring Festival at Junior Section 2

Spring, the queen of all seasons was welcomed on its very first day this year with a colourful fair at Junior Section 2 on 13 February. The teachers grasped the occasion to orient the young children with some traditional things of Bangladesh such as bioscope, lantern, ‘palki, dheki, langol’, and also the nest of ‘babui’ bird. The enthusiastic children clad in yellow and red took great pleasure in buying little stuffs such as toys, books, candy floss, etc. from the stalls. The festive look of their school building helped them to get to know what spring really brings for them.

Boshonto Uthshab at Bengal Boi

On 13 February the music club of Middle Section 1 was at ‘Bengal Boi’ the recent hub of book lovers at Dhanmondi 27. The singers created the sense of spring in the air by their harmonious renditions of songs and mirthful dancing.

Ushering in Monsoon

Sunnydale marked the advent of monsoon with brief programmes at the morning assemblies on 31 July. The music club and the students heartily sang the songs of rain and welcomed the season formally.

Sharat

The autumn radiance of clear and bright sky was cherished in the morning assemblies on 26 September in all the sections. The presence of the heavenly cotton like Kans flowers (Kash phool) and the welcoming song for ‘Sharat’ sung by the students marked the presence of the mild, pleasant and refreshing autumn season.

Pohela Boishakh

The little ones from Playgroup and Nursery gladly sensed the arrival of the Bengali New Year on 15 April this year. They were acquainted with the ‘Pohela Boishakh’ feeling through ‘Boishakh’ songs and spending the day making crafts. The other sections of Sunnydale too welcomed the day in a festive mood. Teachers came dressed in the traditional attire of red and white sarees to enliven the Bengali new year perception among students and the music club of each building filled the air with songs fitting for the occasion such as ‘Esho he Boishakh’ and ‘Elo Boishakh’.

Observing Days of Historical Significance

Patriotism, selflessness, reverence for the freedom fighters and the freedom itself – these all are instilled in our students by observing and celebrating days of historical importance.

International Mother Language Day

All the five sections of Sunnydale paid tribute to our language martyrs with great respect and emotion on the occasion of ‘Ekushey February’.

Morning assemblies saw students solemnly laying flowers at the model ‘Shaheed Minar’ and all the while singing ‘Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano’. The ambience of the day was lifted with speeches about the historical importance of the day reminding the students and the rest about the conflicts of 1952 and the true value of our mother tongue.

Celebrating 98th birth anniversaryof the Father of the Nation

Sunnydale celebrated the 98th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and drew light on his immense contribution as the architect of Bangladesh. The day’s lessons focused on the life history of this great legend.

National Mourning Day

Sunnydale observed National Mourning Day this August, marking the 43rd anniversary of the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The episode of the fateful night was reminisced in the morning assemblies and later in the day, Middle Section 1 went to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum to experience the remnants of the black night of 15 August. The hue of black in the teachers’ clothes registered the gloomy significance of the day in young minds.

Parents Orientation Programme for Playgroup 2018-19 Session

As the parents look forward to the day their children put their first steps in Sunnydale, they must be well oriented with all the rules and regulations regarding their children’s smooth schooling in the institution. To make it sure, as usual the orientation was organized on 11 May 2018 headed by the Principal, who thoroughly inducted the parents about the entire aspects of Sunnydale. Both the Vice Principals and teachers were also present at the occasion.

Young students of Junior Section 2 shared their toys with the children of schools from low socio-economic background from 23 to 27 Sept. They learned the importance of sharing and caring, by doing so, and participated in the journey of smiles.

On the closing day a crest from ‘Khelna Bank’, the organisers of the programme, was awarded to Junior Section 2 which was gladly received by the Vice Principal, Ms. Zebunnessa Mahmud.

The mirthful dance amalgamated with the operatic music and the bard’s lyrics sung in mellifluous voice stole the heart of the audience then and there – and this was the curtain raiser of the stage rendition of the laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s musical-drama ‘Balmiki Protibha’ that Sunnydale Middle Section 1 staged on 2 April 2018 at Shilpakala Academy.

The audience that included dignitaries, parents, students and teachers remained mesmerized and speechless since the moment the curtains were raised; the spell created was only broken with ‘Aahs’ and ‘Ahaas’ from the engrossed viewers. The brilliance in the performance was much beyond the expectations from such young students of Classes II to V.

The Chief Guest Mr. H. T. Imam, Political Advisor to the Honourable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, graced the occasion. In his inspirational speech he expressed that his misapprehension that English medium schools only nurture English language and western culture was cleared after observing Sunnydale and the likes celebrating such cultural and historical events from the history of Bangladesh with equal reverence and enthusiasm.

The Principal, Ms Tazeen Ahmed, in her closing speech thanked the performing students and their dedicated parents without whom the show would not have been possible. She also thanked their many mentors who worked hard behind the scenes for the past few months to make this splendid effort a grand success.

The awe-inspiring performance of the team ‘Balmiki Protibha’ compelled the authority to recognize their efforts in a moderately grand ceremony where all the performers and their parents were invited. The Principal awarded the certificates to the team individually at the Senior Section on 5 May 2018.

The Red Day

Junior Section 1 plays a major role in helping the 3 and 4 plus little ones to learn the basics of everything - from holding a pencil correctly to recognising its colour etc. In order to help young children get familiar with red colour in an entirely different manner they celebrated the ‘Red Day’. On 11 August the building was decorated in hues of red to celebrate the Red Day. Everybody from students to teachers wore red on that day.

From debates and sports tournaments to other competitions, Sunnydalians have excelled time and time again. It is an honour in itself to represent Sunnydale and bring home laurels. But what makes it even more incredible is being recognized for it. The Achievers’ Eve at Sunnydale is the night dedicated to the achievers. This year the celebration was held on 17 April. The euphoria of that night cannot be put into words. After a beautiful commencement speech, there was a performance by some achievers. Afterwards the Principal and Vice Principal delivered words of wisdom for the achievers followed by speeches from a few achievers themselves. The unforgettable stellar night came to an end with scrumptious snacks. Being recognised and celebrated for representing Sunnydale was an unsurpassable experience for the achievers from all the sections.

Sunnydale Language Fest III

Sunnydale Competes in Inter-School Language Festivals

March 8 and 9 saw the Middle Section 2 once again busy with organizing Language Fest III which was also termed as The War of Words III. Over two hundred students participated in that intra school event. The talented vocalists of Class VII made the opening ceremony a memorable event. The inspiring words of the English Club organisers and the opening speech by the honourable Principal were more than enough to raise the tempo of the fest. The Fest included the following competitions:

• Spelling Bee • Instant Story Writing

• Instant Poetry Writing • Extempore Speech

• Recitation • English Quiz

Each winner was awarded with the Certificate of Competence.

The organizers and editors of the English Club relentlessly put a lot of time and effort to make the event a huge success. To live up to the expectations of the previous two fests, was not an easy task but these young people proved their excellence in organizational skills equally.

The ambitious students of Sunnydale, as always, took part in other educational fests throughout the city in the past few months. They also competed in Academia Lit Fest, Notre Dame English Fest and Residential Model School English Festival with other well-reputed schools from around the country and proved their excellence in Story Writing, Anagrams, Spelling Bee and English Quiz.

Samin Sharar Bin Bunjur, Rabab Yamin Huq, Mehreen Khan, Absana Asafudullah and Gazi Mahir Prodhani are just a few names from the list of the winners.
