Welcome Welcome to latest edition of the newsletter. It has been a very busy term so far. NAIDOC Week NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s, which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. The school is celebrating NAIDOC week this week through a variety of events. Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage (CGEN) Year 10 student Rachel Redlich recently represented the school as a part of the Creative Generation – State Schools Onstage (CGEN) event in Brisbane at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). Rachel was one of only ten backing vocalists chosen across Queensland through an audition process. Rachel also played the trumpet as a part of the Musically Outstanding Students (MOST) program. Congratulations Rachel! Kokoda Challenge A large contingent of Dalby High staff and students participated in either the 96 km or 48 km version of this incredibly arduous challenge in the Gold Coast hinterland last weekend. As usual, those involved did themselves and the school proud with some determined and unforgettable efforts. All participants were recognised at senior secondary assembly on Monday. I am in awe of what those involved achieved! University College School Rugby Tour This week the school was fortunate enough to host a visiting Rugby Union Team and a contingent of staff, from the University College School in Bath, England. Our visitors had a busy few days keeping up with their training regime but also touring local farms and other key agricultural sites. The visit culminated in a Rugby match against a combined Dalby State High School and Our Lady of the Southern Cross College team on Monday evening. The visit was an overwhelming success and we are happy to have been a part of the tour. School Leadership Team Changes There are a few changes to the school leadership team that our school community should be aware of. Anne Rathmell has completed her time as acting Principal at Chinchilla High and returns to her Head of Bunya Campus position. This sees Jason Marini return from the Head of Bunya Campus position to Deputy Principal at Nicholson Campus. Bronwyn Henschell will not however, move from Deputy Principal back to Head of Department (HPE / Sport) as she is completing special duties to assist with the implementation of the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) for the remainder of the year. This sees Cameron Miers remain as Head of Department (HPE / Sport) for semester 2. Year 10 News Welcome back—The end of last term was certainly hectic for the Year 10s with some challenging assessment followed by work experience in weeks 9 and 10. While it would have been tempting to make an early start to the holidays, it was great to see those who turned out for the Athletics Carnival on the last two days of Term II. While we may not have been the cohort with the highest attendance (the temptation proved too great for some), the Year 10s did have the fewest students dropping off on the second day. And no wonder; the spirit of friendly competition, sportsmanship, participation and encouragement were out in full-force again this year. It was a wonderful day, full of memory-building.

Subject Selection Evening—After a well-earned break it is straight back into the serious stuff now. The Year 10s have already been addressed by Heads of Department about subjects available to them in Years 11 and 12. There will be an information evening for both students and parents/guardians this Tuesday, July 30, from 4:50pm in the Hall, which I strongly encourage all of you to attend. In addition to outlining senior subjects, there will be information about what students need to do to accumulate sufficient points to complete their Queensland Certificate of Education, as well as everything you need to know about ATAR, the new tertiary entrance ranking that replaces the OP. Even if right now students are not considering tertiary studies, a lot can change over the next few years, and it is wise to keep doors open.

SET Planning—Presentations this week, and the subject selection evening next week, will inform the students’ Senior Education and Training (SET) planning, which will culminate in SET interviews in Week 9 of this term. Further information will be presented to the Year 10s during SPP classes which will also help prepare them for their SET interviews. Please have regular discussions at home about where they see themselves after school, to help them make informed choices about pathways to pursue in Years 11 and 12. Again, it’s okay to not know exactly what they want to do after school, but we want to be sure not to limit future opportunities. Those students who are unsure about the future require just as, if not more, well-considered planning than those who know what they want to do.

Year 10 Camp—In addition to the change of bringing Senior Camp forward into Year 10, we have also had a change of venue. This year, the Year 10 camp will be at Emu Gully, just outside Toowoomba, in the last week of October in Term IV. In addition to the typical leadership and team-building activities provided by traditional outdoor education facilities, Emu Gully’s delivery of programs is themed with reverence to Australian military history, and ideals such as mateship and ANZAC spirit. Though not glorifying war, the activities and challenges students will face foster resilience, team-work, self-reflection and character-building. I am very excited about camp, and can’t wait to see the Year 10s throw off their 21st Century social-media trappings, get their hands dirty and reap the rewards of physical and mental challenges, and make memories they will carry with them for the rest of their lives after high school. We’re past the halfway point now.

Interested in Chaplaincy? Dalby SHS has a current vacancy for a school Chaplain. Chaplains provide social, emotional, and spiritual support to school communities. They provide a listening ear and a caring presence in the school, available for all students, staff, and families. At Dalby SHS the Chaplain is a key member of the Wellbeing and Support Teams. This is a part-time position, supporting both Nicholson Campus and Bunya (boarding) Campus. It is a requirement of the role that the successful applicant currently holds or is eligible for a Blue Card and will undergo a Police Check. Additional qualifications may be required. Details can be provided on request. If you would like more information about the role, or have an interest in applying, please contact the school on 07 4669 0900.

Year 12 News

When I first spoke to my cohort at the start of Year 8, I talked to them about an opportunity they would have in Year 12 that I wanted them to start thinking about straight away - being part of the Kokoda Challenge as either a walker or a support person. It piqued their interest (which is exactly what I wanted) and culminated in the past two days. Big breath as the tears start again....In 30 years of teaching, this was the most rewarding and incredible thing I have ever done. I couldn’t be more proud of my kids who walked or supported their friends as they walked. I have the honour of being responsible for an amazing cohort of young adults. This weekend, my heart has just burst with pride as I cheered and cried and hugged them as they crossed that finish line. Tears and ridiculously tight hugs were the order of the day for those 3 who had to pull out injured and then for those who finished. I am more proud of them than I already was - they have pushed themselves so hard that they have discovered strength some of them didn’t know they possessed and that will stand them in good stead for some of the awful stuff life will throw at them. To Cam & Cheryle, Schreibs & Sam, Tarryn & Sheila, Mark & Kelly, Britt, Caitlin & Zoe, and Emily & Bron who gave up their time to give my kids this opportunity, thank you forever because they will remember this forever. Thanks Tony and Jas for being our bus drivers and Katrina for just being there. Finally, thank you Cheryle for making it all possible - as always, you go above and beyond for Dalby SHS kids and when it’s mine the effort is for, I cannot thank you enough. There are so many photos but I can’t include them all so you’ll find some of the best in our electronic newsletter available on the school’s website.

Year 8 News Welcome to Semester 2, 2019. The year is definitely passing us by quickly and I am hopeful that your student is taking every step to succeed in year 8. You and your students need to be aware of a number of opportunities occurring this semester. The first opportunity is thoroughly going through your son and/or daughters report card. This is the single most important document that you can process while sitting down with your student/s. The cohort as a whole has done relatively well, however like always there is room for improvement. A quick data analysis is below. Level of Achievement—83.4% of the cohort achieved a grade of C or higher, with 15.7% being lower than this. This is definitely an area that we can improve upon with extra study, more focus in class and seeking assistance from staff. Effort—88% of the cohort achieved a grade of C or higher, with 12% being lower than this. This is a pleasing result as a lot of students were in the A to B range for effort. Behaviour—91% of the cohort achieved a grade of C or higher, with 9% being lower than this. Again a pleasing result. As the year progresses I would expect this percentage to grow as students further understand the expectations of the classroom. Attendance—This is an area that we need to improve. The year 8 ‘bum on seat’ percentage is 85.4% This is below the school target of 90%. On the positive there are 13 students in year 8 who have attended every single day which is awesome. End of Year Rewards Trip—This semester students will be invited to attend their end of year rewards trip to a theme park on the Gold Coast (either Wet n Wild or Dreamworld). The final destination will be decided within our cohort. Students to be eligible for this trip need to have an attendance rate of 90% or higher and be on green behaviour for the entire semester 2. Individual circumstances may be considered by the year level coordinator and head of year, in consultation with the principal. Academic Awards Ceremony—The awards ceremony will be on Monday week 4 of this term. Students must be in full formal uniform to gain their certificates on stage. Uniform passes or notes will not be accepted as an excuse. Students who are not in full formal uniform will receive their awards on year level assembly. Support Programs—If your student has been identified as benefiting from a support program please don’t think this is a negative reflection. These programs are a strength based solution with a focus on allowing students to make a more informed and appropriate decision for their behaviours. This again is a great opportunity. General—Please ensure your students are following the school policies with specific reference to the electronic devices policy and the uniform policy. Hats are an issue for some students and using phones in class is an issue. Please refer to the updated process in this newsletter. All students have been given information on assembly surrounding this process. Thanks—Thank you to the parents and carers who have been in contact with me to be able to further support their student in year 8. If your student is struggling or needs an extra hand I am more than happy to assist or direct them to the right person to gain extra support at school. I can be contacted on 4669 0900 or [email protected] Thank you for your support in being your student’s year coordinator.

Hello from the Year 9 Head of Year

On Friday last week we rewarded our Year 9 students for achieving 100% attendance in Term 2. These students showed great commitment to their learning and embody the schools vision of: Creating the future; every student, every day. The students enjoyed their pizza al fresco, enjoying the winter sun, and were joined by Mrs Young, Ms Henschell and Mr Marini. Well done to all 18 students and I look forward to hosting another reward for 100% attendance in Term 3 soon!

SENIOR MUSIC PROJECT: Songs from The War Artist

Senior Music students are presently underway with what is perhaps the most ambitious project to ever be undertaken in the school’s music department. Year 11 and 12 music students are collaborating with Topology, a world-class quintet and award-winning music educators based in Brisbane and Simon Cleary, award-winning author of the novel The War Artist (2019 UQP). Students are composing songs and instrumental interludes to match characters and scenes from the novel. This will culminate in a performance with Topology on Friday 1st November 7pm in Great Hall. (go to school Face book to see you tube footage of Topology). So, yes, it’s going to be like a musical, but without acting scenery and costumes. How can your student be involved? We need a big chorus to support our lead singers: Bryn O’Connor, Philip Marcelo, Luke Scott, Lachlan Trickett, Mackayla James, Molly Haughney, Rachel Redlich and Ziyra Marchant. Come along to M03 next Wednesday 31 July at

noon to sign-up for chorus. Everyone is

welcome!

Brekky Club & Lunch Brekky Club operates out of the old tuckshop each morning from 8am until 8.45am. Students who have missed breakfast are welcome to come and get some toast, yoghurt and fruit, with hot breakfast available one day each week. The old tuckshop is also open for the first 20 minutes at lunch (12pm until 12.20pm) for students to make themselves a sandwich if they’ve forgotten their lunch or need something extra. This program would not be possible without the financial support of Rotary Club of Dalby and the DSHS P&C Association, and generous donation of bread from Brumbies Dalby.

Year 11 News The holidays are over and classes are moving forward at full speed, with many subjects well on their way into Unit 2. Last week, David Schreiber (HOD Senior School) and Emily Curr (Guidance Officer) spoke to the students in relation to QCE compliance and ATAR eligibility. It is very important that any student considering a subject change does so as soon as possible to ensure they do not fall too far behind in their Unit 2 studies. Parent Teacher Interviews— Thank you to the parents and caregivers who attended the Parent Teacher Interviews this week. If you were unable to attend and would like to speak with your student’s teachers, I am happy to assist you with this. Feel free to email or call me to arrange this. Gold and Silver Awards— The award ceremony to recognise students' academic performance and outstanding attendance from Semester 1 will take place on Monday 5th August. Students who are receiving an award will be notified by mail in the coming days. In order for students to be presented with their award on stage, they MUST be in formal uniform. Seeking Help— Term 3 will be another busy term as the cohort makes their way to the final phase of their schooling. As always, I encourage all Year 11 students to make the most of the opportunities for additional help made available to them. One of the things that I love most about Dalby State High School is the willingness of teachers to give up their own time to work with students so they can improve their academic success. Whether it be a regular tutoring session (such as the Maths sessions on Tuesday mornings) or a one-off lunch time tutorial, teachers are always there to help students if needed. The Term Ahead— During this term, we will also be ordering the Senior Jerseys. As with the current Year 12 cohort, students will have the option of a Senior Jersey, a Senior Shirt (different from the senior shirt worn as part of the regular uniform) and a hoodie. Students have the option to select which item, or all if so desired, they would like to purchase. In order for students to get the maximum amount of wear out of these products in 2020, it is imperative that our orders are finalised by the end of this term. More information about the costs and due date for orders will be forthcoming very shortly. As always, please feel free to contact me via phone or email [email protected] if you have any concerns regarding your student’s progress.

Sarah Hemmings Year 11 Coordinator

Year 9 Update Welcome back to Term 3 and to the final Semester as a junior cohort. I hope all students had a wonderful break and are ready to improve their attendance and GPA. I would like to welcome our new students and their families to our great school. On board—Emily, our senior Guidance officer introduced herself to our cohort on Monday. Emily will be helping the students to look at their future career paths and opportunities. Students had to look at their data and write their 50-day plan to get started. Please check in with your child and see what their plan is to improve over the term. Some students have a career plan of what they would like to do and some do not, however that is okay as it is a hard for the students to decide at such a young age. With the new senior assessment system, students need to start thinking earlier of their futures so they are ready to pick the correct subjects for year 10. Heads of Departments will also be talking to students about the year 9 semester 2 grades requirements needed to be able to do each subject. Some senior subjects have different levels to cater for the variety of entry requirements for future careers. This is why it is important for your child to be thinking ahead. Our Maths HoD Mrs Crowther gave them great advice and said to our students that their senior years start now not in 6 months time. I know this transition journey is scary and for some parents it is your first time to experience this transition and the unknown can be frightening. If you have, any questions about this please email me and I will discuss it with the relevant people to try to find you an answer. Remember, if you feel your question is weird, awkward, too small or too big please still email. Attendance—Our cohort attendance is still below standard. It is super important that your child attends every lesson everyday. If they are away for any reason, please let the office staff know by ringing or emailing the absence line. If you receive a text it is the parents/ guardians responsibility to respond. Your child is responsible to go to the staff rooms to see their subject teachers for missed work. Awards—Our award presentations are on Week 4, Monday session one. Students need to check the list in their year area to see if they are receiving an award. It is important that students take pride in receiving these as they have put in great effort to earn them. Students must be in full formal uniform. If possible, please come along and support our students on the day.

Arrow Energy Broncos Leadership Camp 2019 Arrow Energy and the Brisbane Broncos teamed up to provide a Leadership Camp for aspiring students from Miles, Chinchilla and Dalby. Thirteen students, plus Mrs Fife and Ms Olsson, travelled to Brisbane to participate in Leadership sessions run by the Broncos and Arrow Energy at the Broncos Headquarters in Brisbane. The trip also included an informative trip to the Queensland Museum’s NASA exhibition, a pre-game media session with Scott Prince and Justin Hodges and some great seats to watch the Broncos and Bulldogs game! Within the Leadership sessions, students engaged in activities that challenged them both mentally and physically. They also participated in seminars that taught them about leadership qualities including perseverance, teamwork, resilience, respect and hard-work. The students walked away keen to develop their leadership skills, as well as their personal brand and the power of choice that they have over the direction of their lives. Watching the genuinely excited and star struck faces of our students meet and mingle with their much-admired Broncos players was priceless, and a highlight for the teachers. Dalby State High school students were an absolute stand-out with their behaviour and they certainly set a wonderful example for their peers from the other schools. We are grateful to Arrow Energy and the Broncos for providing our school with this opportunity.

Sports News Athletics Carnival: Thanks to all the students who attended the 2019 DSHS Athletics Carnival at the end of Term 2. Attendance and participation numbers were high and it was a great two days of running, jumping, throwing and supporting. Congratulations to all athletes, especially our place getters, encouragement award winners and age champions. Thanks a lot to the P and C for donating the encouragement award medals once again this year.

Inner Downs Sport: The Inner Downs Athletics carnival is being held in Oakey next Wednesday (31st July). Rugby League : Congratulations to the open boys Rugby League team who are the Jonathan Thurston Cup winners after defeating Assumption College in Toowoomba. The boys are still involved in the State Cup competition, with Chinchilla SHS forfeiting the regional final that was to be played in week 2. This will result in the team moving through to the next stage of the competition and competing against a metropolitan team in the coming weeks. Netball: The Open girls Vicki Wilson team is training hard in preparation for their tournament in Toowoomba in August. See Miss Hayes or Miss Sadler if you would still like to be involved in this team.
