Before the expansion, 30 to 40 females were sold into other herds each year. Now with the expansion, the Masheks are keeping females, as they aim for a herd of approximately 400 milking. The Masheks explored the value of genomic testing when the technology became commercially available several years ago. Dennis is sold on the testing. We test 20 head a month, he said. Weve got a young sire thats going to be the new No. 1 udder composite bull in the breed. Along with unveiling quality genetics - or the lack of them - genomic testing is useful in pinpointing animals that carry the threat of recessive traits and birth defects. You can eliminate a lot of those issues in your dairy, Dennis said. Genomics gives you the productive life of your cattle, your daughter pregnancy rate and health traits. Its a phenomenal tool. Lower milk prices, compared to 2015, have proven challenging, but the Masheks have taken steps to soften their blow. One was to buy a semi and tanker and begin trucking the farms milk themselves. That began this past August. Weve eliminated that middleman, and that money comes back into our pockets, Dennis said. Dennis said the farms milk is sold to Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) and is trucked 90 miles to a Kemps processing facility in Rochester, Minn. Hilltop Acres lls a 54,000-pound (6,300-gallon) tanker every ve milkings. The gross savings amounts to $140,000 a year, Dennis said. But, after costs are deducted the savings

is more like 60 cents per hundredweight, he added. Down the road, if they can ll a tanker every otherday, I think youre going to see more farmers truckingtheir own milk. Theyll start doing that to put a little extra pro t into their pockets, Dennis said. He thinks his milk price will stay around $18.50per hundredweight, due to the high components. But, he has contracted milk for six months at $15.63. HilltopAcres income stream is strengthened by sales of bulls and embryos, Dennis said. Designated an Iowa Heritage Farm in 2013,much of Hilltop Acres success is due to owners andemployees working together. Its a team effort and a team concept, Dennissaid. Teams are successful. He added, The key is a positive attitude. If thebosses have a positive attitude, it trickles down and makes a good working environment for everybody.
