Dear Miss Kitty,I met a wonderful woman

who had just relocated to SBfrom an affluent area. Ourprevious two dates had gonevery well and I wanted tomake a third dinner date withher. I offered two suggestionsfor our date which were morethan adequate, but she wantedto “upgrade” my suggestionsinto the best place in town. Isoftly interjected that Ireserved this place for specialoccasions like birthdays, anniversaries etc. - this wasmet by silence on the phonefor what seemed like an eter-nity. With more than a littleattitude- she did back off andaccepted a mutually agreedupon restaurant - however Iended up by canceling thedate because I couldn’t getover the feeling that she wasdating my wallet and not me.Please provide us girls andguys Miss Kitty’s appropriateprotocol for do’s and don’tson accepting dinner dates.Brian, Santa Barbara

Dear Brian, It’s hardly a “consolation”

prize but please take a virtualbouquet of man -flowers andone of the highly covetedMiss Kitty ‘Real Man of theYear” Awards that I keep inthe back of my closet.Sticking to your chosen codeof values with integrity andstaying solidly the authentic“You” - even though coercedby the intimidating silence ofthis “wonderful’ woman - is acritical male moment to enjoyand honor. Without significantself-torture or ceremony youremained steady and on-track,

taking the high road of inde-pendence and self-rule. Yourultimate reward, of course, isthat you are not stuck spend-ing your time with a potentialgold digger, a pushy broad, orsomeone who can manipulateyou through as many doors ashumanly possible. AsMichael French, Stylist to theStars says: “Next!” In the last twenty years the

accepted protocol of datinghas changed dramatically.Dating by keyboard and cellphone, instead of making eyesover the clinking ice in asmoky den of ill-repute,demands that the protocol ofwho (pays) and where (weeat) must be very clear. Andsince everyone is capable ofwearing the pants and there-fore has pockets - no oneshould assume that the manalways needs to be the wallet. Speaking of wallets, they

are now as easily filled bywomen as by men. Hardcored feminists with a drawerfull of blackened bras stillreeking of lighter fluid willno doubt refute this statisticbut hey-maybe it’s time weaccepted that opportunity andentrepreneurship hasn’t beengender specific for quite sometime. Praise the lord and passthe Midol.

What makes modern datingconfusing is that the equalityaspect plays havoc with thehard wired instinct to be achaser and a chasee. Whichbrings us back again to know-ing your own mind. Therules of dating are easilymutable, but what your com-fort and expectation levels aremay not be as clear as yet. IfCindy asks out Mike for din-ner and a movie and doesMike have to leave anyexpectation of a good nightkiss at the bottom of the pop-corn bag? Hmmmm. Kind ofnice that the obligatory goodnight kiss is no longer boughtand paid for in advance.Maybe we are growing upafter all. The basic rule of wallets is

thus: If there is pleasure inthe paying then by all meansindulge. If there is trepida-tion or a feeling of beingbought then pay your ownway. A corollary to the ruleof wallets is: If you are theasker, you should expect topay – but in return, as askeryou have first dibs on whereyou go to spend your hard-earned dough. By this corol-lary, Brian an alternateresponse to your friend couldhave been: “Sure, we can goto (insert upscale SantaBarbara restaurant here) – doyou want me to drop you bythe ATM before so you canpick up some cash?Because dating rules are no

longer dressed up in a zootsuit with an overcoat of socialconvention, it is up to theindividuals involved to decidewhat feels good and what iscomfortable. A wealthy icon

like Warren Buffet might pre-fer his beloved Dairy Queento the Four Seasons – but heis comfortable enough in hisown skin to know what hewants, and why. Any less-than-authentic woman wouldbe completely off-base in try-ing to correlate Mr. Buffet’staste in restaurants with thesize of his wallet. There canno longer be the expectationof anything, therefore ifsomeone does the asking theydo the paying. If someone isa decent human being whounderstands give and take andis not a game-playing sponge-of-a-taker, they know enoughto be gracious and accept theoffering of a date - whateverthat may be as a gift. Darling Brain, Boys and

Girls, seek out those decentsouls to spend your time andmoney on that recognize thedate is about learning eachother not ‘checking In” to thebest eats in town. Dating someone that has

more interest in the wherethan in you is like beingburied in a casket with anadjustable mattress-you don’tneed it and never will.

Have a naughty day!

You might call these guys— Nate Latta, Tom Modugno,Carter Morgan, Jim Kelly andDave Powdrell-- hombres, but they’re better known as aband called The Nombres. Ormaybe they’re not.“I can’t even tell you how

many times we’ve been listedas The Hombres,” chuckleddrummer Carter Morgan, acknowledging the fact thatthe two sound very alike, andthat it probably didn’t helpclear up any confusion abouttheir name (which simplymeans “The Names,” inSpanish) when they came upwith it for a Cinco de Mayo-themed fundraising event fouryears ago.“We were just thinking that

for one gig, it would be fine,”said Morgan, “but then as westarted playing a little bitmore, and people startedknowing us, it stuck.”Like most musicians in

town, the five started out indifferent groups before theycame together as TheNombres, and continue to jamwith other local side ventures, occasionally sitting-in withfriends’ bands.Latta (guitar,

singer/songwriter) put out asolo CD about a year ago andheads up Nate Latta and theTrain Hoppers.Powdrell (keyboards),

Modugno (bass and vocals)

and Morgan playwith Don JulioBlanco, as part of alarger ensemble thatcovers the same sortof music as TheNombres: classicrock-and-roll from’60s, ’70s and ’80s.The Nombres

plan to take thestage at 8 p.m. atCreek Side Inntonight.“We do like it

when everybody’s dancing;that seems to be our forte,”said Powdrell, who is a CPAand Carpinteria Rotary mem-ber in his daily life. “It moti-vates us to play stronger andbetter, with more vigor. Welike the dynamics to bring itdown to be really moody, thenbring up to a hard-drivingbeat.”They’ve got quite a few

originals, but for the most partthey cover other artists, likethe Beatles, Rolling Stones,Van Morrison, and BobDylan. Every now and thenthey stray off the straight rockpath, by throwing in a littlerockabilly or reggae. All but Powdrell rotate in

on vocals, which is just theway he likes it. Modugnoowns the Santa Cruz Marketsand is a longtime local surfer;Kelly not only plays guitar forThe Nombres, he also is their

web master; Lattateaches fifth gradeat Mountain ViewSchool, regularlybringing his guitarinto the classroom;and Morgan andPowdrell kneweach other fromPalos Verdes HighSchool, beforemaking their wayup the coast andreconnecting inSanta Barbara. In

fact, Morgan, influenced byhis older brother’s musicaltastes, used to play the drumsfor Powdrell’s younger broth-er’s band, back in those days.A lot of the guys’ families

have music in their back-ground. Latta’s father anduncle are both known musi-cians, Kelly and his son oftenplay the guitar together, andMorgan’s father was a Frenchhorn player who liked to blastBeethoven and other orches-tral music in the house. Thefamily joke was that roleswere reversed, when the kidswere constantly yelling attheir dad to “turn down thatmusic!”But rest assured, Morgan

and The Nombres will beturning it up tonight. Theemail blast has gone out, andthey expect to see lots offriends and followers at theCreek Side, where they play

two or three times a year. They recently did a benefit

concert for the CarpinteriaPlaza Playhouse Theater, andparticipate annually in theAvocado Festival, El CapitanCanyon Summer ConcertSeries, and the MontecitoUnion School Carnival.Morgan’s students love it

when he’s up there, and thecarnival is a great chance foraudience participation and tobring some of the kids up toplay.“Sometimes they know the

songs and sometimes theydon’t, but some are so talent-ed that you tell them ‘Standby Me in the key of D,’ andboom ... off they go,” saidPowdrell.Morgan has a couple of

kids in class who are aspiringyoung musicians in the rockband, “White Moon.” Musicgives him another thing torelate to the kids with, and it’ssomething they all know himfor, as do their parents and hiscoworkers. The band’s music speaks

for itself and pretty soon itmay be something you knowthem for, as well. You justhave to remember the nameof these hombres: TheNombres.

It isn’t every day that youget caught hooked on a filmyou didn’t expect, but“Salmon Fishing In TheYemen” will reel you in. Itscharm and wit make for agood story, but its example ofsimple faith is inspiring.Caught between the culturesof stiff upper lip Great Britainand the desert mystery of themiddle east, a viewer can eas-ily fall in love with both.Dr. Alfred Jones (Ewan

McGregor) is a British fish-eries expert who knows everydetail of the life of salmon inthe streams of his country. Heis methodically devoted to hisstudy, and his personal life isequally methodical and corre-spondingly dull. While he ison the verge of marriage, hispassion is really about fish-ing. In his spare time, heplays in a string quartet in anold, seemingly abandoned, church. Life has a way of bringing

together strange circum-stances and such is the casewhen Sheikh Muhammed(Amr Waked), a billionairefrom Yemen, who also has acastle in Scotland, proposesto Dr. Jones that they embarkon a journey to stock salmonin the Yemen. Dr. Jones is

aghast and dismisses the ideaas a rich man’s fantasy.Meanwhile, the British gov-ernment is looking for anykind of “feel good story” outof the middle east to reducethe tensions that are mountingin the media as a result oftheir military blunders. With great comic timing, a

British press officer, PatriciaMaxwell (Kristin ScottThomas), happens onto thislittle story she reads about aYemen Sheik who wants tobuild this cross-cultural tiebetween their two countriesthrough salmon fishing. Sheproceeds to convince theBritish government that this isthe answer to their prayers. What unfolds next makes fora charming story of life, love,

and faith, with lots of laughsalong the way. Maxwell isthe queen of spin and herhilarious management of thisstory changes all of the livesof the participants.Representing Sheikh

Muhammed is Harriet (EmilyBlunt), a perky investmentcounselor who doesn’t blinkan eye when Dr. Jones firstrebuffs her offer from theSheik with a sarcastic retortthat the his nonsensical ideawould cost 50 million BritishPounds. She just goes andgets the money and Dr. Jonesis mortified. The counterbal-ancing story, though, is thatHarriet is broken-hearted overthe disappearance and appar-ent death of her charming andhandsome military boyfriendwho is a British war hero. When Dr. Jones slowly fallsunder the spell of Harriet’scharm, she struggles to getbeyond her grief to see hisbudding love. The spiritual nature of the

two main men in this story ispart of its charm. Dr. Joneswas raised in Scotland in theshadow of what once hadbeen a great Christian culturebut no longer has any mean-ing to him or anyone heknows. By contrast, Sheikh

Muhammed is a man of greatfaith, and he appeals to Dr.Jones to live with a biggerpurpose in mind than justcatching fish or barely surviv-ing on an emotional level. Atone point, Dr. Jones witnessessome villagers in Yemen stop-ping for daily prayers and heremarks about how differenttheir worlds were. “In myworld,” he comments, “noone stops for prayers.Sundays are meant for goingto Costco.”What ends up happening in

Yemen is a modern miracle, but it is not without its localcritics. There are those whohave no interest in bringingWestern culture into theirhomeland and are willing todo anything to stop it. Itbecomes apparent that anygood deed rarely succeedswithout a struggle.“Salmon Fishing In The

Yemen” is a good example ofhow each of us needs to breakout of our little world ofassumptions to see how bigour world is. It is also a greatstatement of how shallow ourfaith can become while weare surrounded by a culturethat seems to offer so manyalternatives for self-satisfac-

HEALTH NEWS IN BRIEF

Updated results from a long-term study concludes that regularprostate cancer screening cuts the risk of death from prostate cancer. But there was no overall difference in death rates between men

who got screened and those who didn't. And the lower chances ofdying of prostate cancer came at a high cost.To prevent just one death, researchers found,1,055 men would

need to be offered screening and 37 would be diagnosed with can-cer and forced to make tough decision about whether or not toundergo treatment. What's more, only two of the eight countries involved in the

study saw fewer prostate cancer deaths, while the others six did not.Screening is done with a simple blood test that measures levels

of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA.

Tests cut prostate cancer risks

U.S. health officials launched a $54 million advertising cam-paign on Thursday depicting the health risks of smoking in grue-some detail, offering the latest salvo in the government's campaignto deglamorize cigarette smoking. The 12-week advertising blitz, called "Tips From Former

Smokers," is an effort to counteract the estimated $10.5 billion ayear spent by tobacco companies to market and promote cigarettesin the United States."This is really a David versus Goliath fight. The tobacco indus-

try has spent more than $100 billion on marketing and promotion. They continue to spend more than $10 billion a year. That's a mil-lion dollars every hour," Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in a telephoneinterview.

Study: Fat men have less sperm

CINEMA IN FOCUS

Heavy men are more likely than their normal-weight peers tohave low sperm counts or no sperm production at all, suggests a newreport. The review of past studies can't prove that overweight or obese

men will have more trouble fathering a child. But researchers saidthat how many sperm men make is one of the key ways doctorsmeasure their fertility."In general you expect that men with lower sperm counts will

have a greater frequency of difficulty conceiving than men withhigher sperm counts, but it's not completely straightforward," saidDr. Jorge Chavarro, from the Harvard School of Public Health, partof the collaborative group that put out the study. How well sperm move, their shape and the quality of DNA they

carry matter too, Chavarro said -- but previous studies have suggest-ed some of those measures of sperm quality may be affected by obe-sity as well.

Apple’s new iPadpopular in AsiaApple's new iPad proved

to be another hot-seller onFriday, with hundredsqueuing at stores acrossAsia to be the first to gettheir hands on the 4G-readytablet computer as the com-pany's share price hit $600for the first time.As consumers lined up

around city streets to buythe iPad, one firm that tookthe new device apart saidQualcomm, Broadcom, andSamsung Electronics hadall held onto their prizedroles as key parts suppliers.David Tarasenko, a 34-

year-old construction man-ager who was the first topick up the iPad from aTelstra store at midnight inSydney, said ever sinceApple Chief Executive TimCook revealed the tablet'sthird iteration, he couldn't

wait to get one."When Tim Cook

announced it, it soundedlike such a magical tool. Ijust got hyped into it, Iguess," he said. The new iPad is a pro-

gressive development ofApple's tablet, with a morepowerful CPU and screenand better camera. It wasnot marketed as a revolu-tionary product like earlierversions, yet Apple devo-tees still snapped up the lat-est version."The iPad is already a

pretty mature product andit's hard to revolutionize itany further," said DickieChang, an analyst withresearch firm IDC based inHong Kong."It's slightly heavier than

its predecessors and I thinkAsian consumers will bemore concerned about

that," he said."Going ahead, with Tim

Cook at the helm now, Ithink he may have to comeup with another product tomark his stamp. That couldcome in the form of launch-ing a smaller iPad with alonger battery life, forinstance."Crowds were down on

previous Apple launches, but there was still excite-ment as stores opened. "I'vecome from Russia to buyan iPad for my three-year-old son David," OlegKonovalov, a newspapersalesman, told Reuters inTokyo. "Everyone inRussia wants an iPad, butto buy it there I will have towait several months. Thisreminds me of the time 30years ago when I waited 8hours in the cold to seeLenin's Mausoleum."

PEDIATRICS IN PARADISE

The smell of freshly cutgrass, the crack of the bat hit-ting the ball and the roar ofparents cheering on their kidsare a few reasons why I reallylove this time of year. DosPueblos Little League openedup for the 30th consecutiveseason with Coach Buddy’sfamous charge and now it’stime to Play Ball!Growing up as a Little

Leaguer, I couldn’t wait to getmy new hat and meet my newteammates. Three decadeslater, the start of a new seasonstill includes me getting a newhat and meeting the kids that Iwill have the opportunity toteach a game that I adore.Baseball season can never

come soon enough. My oldest

son, Josh (8), is now playingin the minors, Andy (4) is lov-ing Tee-ball, while Matt (1)likes to strut around sporting acatcher’s mask.Being able to coach my

sons’ baseball teams is a spe-cial privilege. This season Iam co-managing Josh’s team, the Raptors, with a longtimefriend as well as managingAndy’s team, the Lil’ Angels. It’s a tough juggling act, but itgives me invaluable protectedtime to spend with my boys.Little League is so much

more that just hitting a ballwith a bat. It is a thinkinggame, a game of strategy thatrequires patience, focus, teamwork and a big dose ofhumility. The Raptors were lucky

Award-winning Canadian violinist Alexandre Da Costa went to Franklin Elementary School to perform withstudents.

DAILY SOUND / Victor Maccharoli

Alexandre Da Costa hasperformed with the RoyalPhilharmonic Orchestra, theMontreal Symphony, and theBerlin Symphony. But yester-day the award winningCanadian violinist went toFranklin Elementary Schoolto perform with students. He played a Spanish piece

before groups of first and fifthgrade students before takingquestions that vary from thestock, “How old are you?” tothe astute, “Do you know howto do the col legno?”(it’swhen a violinist hits thestrings with the wood of thebow). And the inevitable,“How do you play like that?”The last question isn’t just

idle curiosity. The studentsare all part of Incredible

Children’s ArtNetwork’s(ICAN) afterschoolmusic program, which pro-vides free music instruction tochildren, and they’re all learn-ing to play the violin them-selves. Da Costa has thisadvice for them: “Playing the violin is not

something easy that you cando from the first minute,” DaCosta said. “But if you prac-tice and practice and practice, then it becomes very easy.Like everything.”The visit is part of the

Santa Barbara Symphony’sMusical Mentors program, aneducation and outreach pro-gram of the Santa BarbaraSymphony which provideslocal students with the oppor-tunity to learn from some ofthe world’s top musicians. And it’s something Da

Costa is all too happy to par-

ticipate in. He remembersmeeting with renowned 20thcentury violinist YehudiMenuhin in his youth. He did-n’t spend long with Menuhin, but it was enough to fuel apassion for the violin that hascarried him around the world.“It ignited my fire for the

future,” Da Costa said. Now 32 he hopes to inspire

something similar in at leastsome of the students. “It gives them an opportu-

nity to see themselves in thefuture and practice harder andtry to go further in thisbecause they really feel themusic inside them,” Da Costasaid. He added that even stu-

dents that don’t become musi-cians can still get somethingout of learning the violin. Hesaid the discipline students

Notice of Public Workshop

A public workshop to discuss expenditure of $100,000 duringfiscal year 2011-12 pursuant to Cachuma Member UnitContracts will be held:

Friday, March 23, 2011, 10:00 AM at

Cachuma Operation and Maintenance Board3301 Laurel Canyon RoadSanta Barbara, CA 93105

If you are unable to attend the workshop, you are welcome toprovide written comments to:

Santa Barbara County Water Agency123 E. Anapamu StreetSanta Barbara, CA 93101Attn.: Matt Naftaly

Background and Discussion

Contracts between the County Water Agency and the CachumaMember Units (approved in 1996) include a provision that states“the Water Agency shall provide $100,000 per year during theterm hereof for beneficial purposes consistent with the WaterAgency Act and within the Santa Ynez River watershed and theCachuma project service area.” As part of the original MemberUnit Contracts, the Water Agency had provided $100,000 peryear for 40 years toward the cost of water purchases from theproject by the Member Units.

During development of the renewed contracts, the Agency andthe Member Units agreed to expand the potential uses of this$100,000 per year so as to include a wide range of planningactivities and potential projects in the Santa Ynez River watershedand within the Cachuma Project service area. Decisions relatingto expenditures of these funds require concurrence by both theAgency and the Cachuma Member Units.

Currently several resource evaluations are underway in the SantaYnez River basin. They include: 1) steelhead/rainbow trout studiespursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding initiated in 1993and renewed in 2001 to implement the Cachuma Project BiologicalOpinion (September 2000) and the Lower Santa Ynez FishManagement Plan (October 2000); and 2) groundwater and surface-water flow and quality monitoring pursuant to several cooperativeagreements among local agencies and the United States GeologicalSurvey.

TheAgency spends a total of $150,000 per year in these interagencystudies. The Cachuma Member Units currently expend roughly$900,000 per year on fisheries activities as well as anestimated $50,000 per year on stream flow and water qualitymonitoring in the Santa Ynez River. WaterAgency staff will considerinformation received in this workshop during development of budgetrecommendations to theWaterAgency Board of Directors. Furtherinformation regarding any of these studies may be obtained fromthe Agency.

What Ilove is that this message applies to so muchmore than the game of baseball.Spilly also told the kids that it is important

to strive to win, but okay to fail. The game ofbaseball prepares you to win and to lose. Hepointed out that major league hitters who bat.300 are considered very successful, but if youthink about it, that means making an out, orfailing, 7 out of every 10 tries. You can’talways be perfect, but with hard work, practiceand a winning attitude you can succeed (onand off of the field).Baseball will always have a special place in

my heart. Many of my fondest childhoodmemories are about playing ball with my dadand brother. I remember a special night each

year when my dad would get out our glovesout, condition them with oil, place a ball in theleather and tie them to form a perfect pocket.A couple days later, we’d take our gloves anda bucket of balls to the school yard and playfor hours.I can’t think of anything more fun than tak-

ing my boys and their buddies out to the ball-park to throw, catch and hit. We’ve beenthrowing and hitting baseballs in the backyardand going to games since the boys were short-er than the bats they are now swinging.I miss my Little League days, but now it is

my turn to pass along something very specialthat my dad and coaches passed along to memany years ago. It’s time to “Play ball!”

The Land Trust for SantaBarbara County announced onThursday that it finalized thepurchase of Hot SpringsCanyon — a 462-acre proper-ty in the hills of Montecito. The trails between Cold

Springs and San YsidroCanyons have been enjoyedby recreational users fordecades—even though it wasprivately owned, the LandTrust said in a news release. The property also features

the ruins of the former HotSprings Resort, which existedthere for more than 130 yearsbefore it burned in 1964.

The property, whichincludes six legal land parcelszoned for residential develop-ment, was purchased for $7.6million.“Thanks to the incredible

generosity of our lead donorsand foundations, who came inearly and strong, we got thiscampaign off the ground andworked with the local commu-nity to save this place forfuture generations,” LandTrust Executive DirectorMichael Feeney said in a pre-pared statement. “Many ofthose who made contributionshave also spent hours andhours of their own time seek-ing additional support. We

couldn’t have achieved thisconservation success withouteach and every one of thefriends who held gatherings intheir homes, made phone calls, and even walked the trailswith information about HotSprings Canyon.”The Land Trust plans to

convey most or all of the landto Los Padres National Forestfor long-term stewardship. The Forest Service owns andmaintains the much of thepublic land that surrounds HotSprings Canyon, which makeit a natural steward for SantaBarbara’s newest stretch ofpreserved property, the state-ment said.

get while learning the violin will help themwith whatever they decide to do for the future. “To learn a violin or any other instrument is

a great way to learn a method of working thatcan be used later in life,” Da Costa said. And that’s part of ICAN’s goal according to

program director Adam Johnston. Johnstonsaid ICAN uses the orchestra as model for acommunity, so that students learn not justmusic, but also social values and skills. Johnston said seeing and meeting musicians

of De Costa’s caliber helps make them visual-ize what their future could be like.“This sort of thing is actually moving them

forward not only as musicians, but also as peo-

ple,” Johnston said. The program is doing just that for fifth

grader Rocelia Rodriguez. Rodriguez, origina-tor of the “col legno” question, said seeing DaCosta play inspired her to keep working. She’dbeen amazed by Da Costa’s playing, his tech-nical knowledge, and the real potential ofmusic. “It made me realize there is no limit,”

Rodriguez said.Da Costa is in town for a solo performance

of “Latin Passion” as part of the Santa BarbaraSymphony’s program. He’ll be performing atthe Granada on Saturday March 17th at 8 p.m.and Sunday March 18th at 3 p.m. The programwill be conducted by Carlos Miguel Prieto andinclude pieces from the ballet “The Three-Cornered Hat” and Bizet’s opera “Carmen.”
